Though not as great as the first film, The Golden Army is still an awesome, fun movie. Guillermo really lets his style shine through on this one too. Lots of stunning and unique visuals.
Long gone are the mythos of the first movie though. Now we're dealing with a little more familiar territory: elves and dwarves and other fantasy-oriented spectacles that would fit right at home in the Neverending Story. Not that that's a bad thing; Guillermo has a refreshing take on the tired genre.
One thing I have to say though, how was David Hyde Pierce too busy to voice Abe again?
this movie wasn't as good as the 1st but it was a nice little love story lol
i like how Ron Perlman looks like hellboy with out all that make up it's like you could just paint him red and that would be good enough
haha
the trailer had rammstein music it would have been in the movie too
Two thumbs way up. A hilarious and breath-taking sequel. I loved this movie. Music, acting, cinemetography, and story line were all really good. The fight sequences stunned and amazed me. Guillermo del Toro is a wonderful/amazing director, one of the best of the century. Highly reccomended to all del Toro fans and Hellboy fans.
Great sequel. Amazing effects and characters and a good solid fairy tale storyline. Luke Goss's villian was rather cool as were The Golden Army. Darker than the first one which was good . Del Toro has such an amazing and creative imagination, can't wait to see what he does with The Hobbit.
Amazing sequel to the original. It is so inventive with the creatures and its just a perfect movie. I hope the 3rd one is gonna be just as good.

Hellboy II: The golden army was good for a sequel. As a film I guess it stands on its own. Guillermo Del Toro has made the masterpiece 'Pan's Labyrinth' and produced 'The orphanage' which was another big success'. And of course 'Hellboy'. Del Toro does have an imaginative mind creating these creatures and a pretty decent story line but I was a *little* disappointed because it kind of got slow in the beginning but that's not a major problem. Overall Hellboy II is a good film even if it's not The dark knight.

yet another masterpiece from del toro, really fun movie this was, very entertaining, very visually stunning, as we all figured it would be going in knowing who made this film, although i admit i did not like del toro's mimic or blade II, I did love hellboy and this hellboy, pan's labrynth was wonderful and his produced orphanage was very well done, and he seems to be on a really good role now, and hopefully he can manage to pull off an actually interesting couple of hobbit movies, and i hear he might remake frankenstein, doctor jekyl & mr. hide, i think both under his vision, could be quite interesting!.
but back to the golden army, from start to finish it kept the interest of plot, characters, and entertainment at full blast, there was more interesting drama in some parts in here that really made it feel more like an epic than just some comic book movie, along with the dark knight, batman begins, and iron man, the two hellboy films have definatly been my favorite comic book movies since the original first two superman films with christopher reeve!
i loved it..wow still in awe, funny, action packed, great special effects, amazing movie in my opinon. And i wasn't a big fan of the first one either, time to go back and watch the first one again.
I liked it a lot more than the first one. The scenes were shot better and I loved the giant plant sequence (I cannot remember the name of that thing). The story and characterization was still iffy for me, but that's probably a matter of personal taste. The CGI was nice though, I will give it that.
I was not a big fan of the original on the first viewing, but after I saw it again, I enjoyed it a lot more. Then I saw the preview for this movie, and my expectation's when as high as possible, and the movie managed to meet them. It knows when to be funny, and also have moments of a great action scene. Filled with amazingly designed characters and great acting, Hellboy II may hold its current place as my favorite film of 2008.
leatherface if you saw the first hellboy movie or even read the comics in the first place you would know hellboy is not ment to be scary at all not one bit, its ment to be a super hero movie not scary, i hope that answers your questions jack ass
Story wise it was on the same level as the last movie. But production wise, this is one of the most beautiful films I have seen in a while. Del Toro, you crazy man, you did it again.
I am a fan of Guillermo...The look and feel of this film has him written all over it. A lot of the creatures reminded me of Pan's Labyrinth. The movie was good, if you are a fan of the original...but...as a stand alone, I think it was too Guillermo and not enough HellBoy. Lot of one line zingers, and even a few laugh out loud moments. I liked it, but, I may be biased since I am a fan of the genre.
First of all, I'm a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro. Pan's Labrynth is that perfect mix of beauty and sadness that makes for a great movie. I'm also just as big of a fan of Ron Perlman. And I think that my problem coming into Hellboy II was that I fell into the trap of high expectations. I love the first Hellboy more every time I see it, and I've been looking forward to this sequel for a long time.
By the end of the movie, however, I felt completely unfullfilled. Not to say that the movie was bad by any stretch of the imagination. It just didn't leave me feeling satisfied, and I think the pacing was the number one fault. What I love about Del Toro is that most of his movies add deep character development to go along with his fantastic creatures. In HB II, however, too much time was spent on the look of the characters and not enough on the characters themselves. The whole love story between Abe and the Princess felt way too rushed, so the choices made by those characters seemed inappropriate. Hellboy's conflict with humans had a lot of wasted potential as well. Maybe Del Toro was just trying to set up a third story, but there was no closure for me in how people felt about the big red lug, and that could have been such a fascinating area to really delve into. Not doing so really left me disappointed.
That being said, there were plenty of scenes that made me remember why I came to see HBII in the first place. The action was great, the costumes even better, and Ron Perlman was as always right on the money.
Now, maybe if I let the movie sink in a little bit I'll have a better opinion, but even after several days I'm still stuck on the disappointments.
This movie was good, not the greatest, but still good. The visiuals were realistic and fun. But the only thing that left me hanging throughout this movie is how weak the plot is. I felt I was watching a different movie with a similar plot. The only different about this movie that it has the Hellboy characters. Though I do like how at times this movie sticks true to the comics (*SPOILERS* For example, Hellboy at the end of the movie quits B.P.R.D. was straight out of the comics). Though the plot wasn't so weak. I mean, I didn't just walked out of the theater thinking the movie was really bad because of the plot. It was really entertaining. Overall I give this movie a 9. I wonder what del Toro is going to do next with Hellboy?
Guillermo Del Toro delivers by surrounding himself with various talents (from the actors, special effects crew, cinamatographer, film score, etc) ..... this one of the better comic book adaptions (even if you're not a Mike Mignola - HellBoy fan the plot isn't that difficult to comprehend) ..... I'm sure there will be a dvd release with added footage put back in (yes it does move along quickly at times cause the Studios ask for that but the Directors get their version on dvd) ..... treat it like SHOCK TREATMENT ("its not a sequel, but an equal") and enjoy another fun summer movie!
Ive seen this movie twice now and thought it was very interesting and entertaining comic book film. With the flood of comic based movies lately this movie differs itself with the wonderful set and monster designs by stellar director Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro brings a very stylized and fresh look to superhero films with his hellboy movies and this one dosent dissappoint. Its what youd expect from the director with his trademark creatures and wonderful action sequences. If you were a fan of Del toro or the original Hellboy then your going to love this movie. I myself enjoyed it very much but felt it moved too quickly at times some scenes i felt that should have been longer moved farely quickly. All together a very good movie i do reccomend a view if this type of movie interests you.
Wow....... This exceeded my expectations ten fold. Much, much better than the first film & I like the first film alot. Every scene seemed to have either great action, a hilarious moment, something really cool that I've never seen before or all of the above.
I'm a monster junkie & this film is a dream come true for me. The Troll Market scene has some of the wildest creatures to date. Mr. Wink rules. When I first saw him use his projectile hand I was grinning from ear to ear. And talking about things I've never seen before, how about the Elemental God? What a beautiful creature that is. The thing is just jaw-droppingly awesome. When it was destroyed only to turn into a giant flower I said "wow" outloud. The Golden Army rates a 10 on the bad ass meter. I was enthralled when Johan Krauss controlled one & started throwing down alongside Hellboy. Fucking awesome scene. Nuada is an all around ass-kicker. (i half expected an immortal track to start playing whenever he showed up) His motivations keep him from being a villain in the classic sense & I dug the hell out of that. Luke Goss gave the character some great weight. Did I mention that he kicks massive amounts of ass?
And as I was watching this great film it dawned on me that what I was witnessing was a grand, epic fable. Even though it takes place in modern times I got the sense that this was an ancient story unfolding before my eyes. The Prince overthrowing his father's rule, the no-legged goblin who made the Golden Army, the underdog hero fighting the rogue Prince for control of the most powerful army ever formed while said army was surrounding the two combatants, the sad end of both the prince & princess, it's the stuff of legend.
And throughout all of the ass-kicking and choice legendary storytelling the film is downright hilarious. Hellboy himself is one of the most likable characters to ever be in movies and every other thing he says seems to be comedic gold. The back & forth between him & Johann Krauss (who's a great addition to the franchise) is particularly hilarious. And the scene where he & Abe get drunk, talk about chicks & sing Barry Manilow songs together, I mean come on. (i almost pissed myself when hellboy stumbled forward to fight nuada)
Man, you've got to give it to Del Toro. He's one of the most exciting & original filmmakers working today. The man's imagination is incredible. There's no doubt that The Hobbit is in great hands.
Hellboy 2 The Golden Army is the logical next step in the evolution of Guillermo del Toro as a storyteller and filmmaker. The film not only revisits the original Hellboy and expands the continuing mythology of Red, Abe and Liz, but reaches all the way back to the clockwork horrors of Cronos: the nightmare underworld of Blade 2; and the fairytale construction of Pan's Labyrinth. The humor is more front and center here than in any of his previous works, and it works without feeling forced.
The performers hit all the right notes, especially the excellent Jeffrey Tambor, who was underused in the last entry.
The set-up is there for a third installment, which hopefully del Toro will get to as soon as his director for hire duties on The Hobbit are fulfilled.
I loved this movie as did my kids, which is rare.So far Hellboy 2 is right up there with Iron Man as my favorites in an otherwise ho-hum summer.
"Hellboy II: The Golden Army" is Guillermo del Torro in his purest element. Those who know and enjoy his previous work, especially the first "Hellboy" film, should have a blast with this one.
The film starts off rather "cheesily", with a flashback scene meant to introduce us to the films setup for plot. The film itself can even be described as "goofy" or macho "cheese", but that is what it's meant to be. Guillermo del Torro brings us perhaps some of his most interesting and fantastical creations in this film, in the forms of both characters or a set pieces. Surprisingly enough, a great deal (most) of the effects are practical. What CGI remains is flawlessly tied together with the practical effects to make for a rather seamless feel. Just wait until you see the "Troll Market"!
Furthermore, "Hellboy II" is one film that builds upon and improves upon the original. There is more humor, wit, action, and creativity this time around. GdT is given a much longer leash by a brand new studio and allowed to work as much magic as he pleases. The outcome is pure fun.
Granted, the first film was flawed. However, I've watched countless times over the past four years and it has grown on me quite a bit. "Hellboy II' corrects the mistakes of its predecessor. For starters, the unnecessary presence of Agent John Myers isn't a problem this time around.
Perhaps the best part about HBII is its heart. It's funny how a film with very few "human" characters can manage more human connection than almost any other 2008 summer blockbuster. Guillermo obviously loves this character, and in turn wants us not only to love him back, but to connect and relate to him. As for those hardcore LOTR doubters of Guillermo del Torro, they should give HBII a look. We can already see shades of "The Hobbit" coming into focus in the film and get an idea of what may possibly be in store for us in the future from Mr. del Torro.
All-in-all, this is a fun, entertaining, and technical accomplishment that is well worth seeing.
I sincerely hated Pan’s Labyrinth with a hardcore passion. The clichés, the copy/paste story that has been used on every fantasy work from Mythago Wood to episodes of the dead cartoon Chalk Zone, the boring war scenes . . . what about Pan’s Labyrinth was there NOT to hate? Likewise, the del Toro produced cliché-in-a-house movie that was The Orphanage made me lose all hope del Toro had any potential.
I’ve never seen the first Hellboy. This was the first slightly original work I have ever seen from del Toro. Without the insanely boring, pointless scenes that Pan’s Labyrinth had, and with much more focused action, Hellboy gave me hope del Toro can use his potential. The man has always has amazing visions and philosophies, but until now I wasn’t sure he could use them. Thank God he proved me wrong.
The movie is very far from perfect, and parts were a little too intentionally cheesy for me, but it works. It awes, it reeks terror, and has some amazing over-the-top action. It really made me feel the same way I felt with all the old children’s fantasy movies like The Dark Crystal and The Never Ending Story, but with a much more mature focus and presentation.
I can now say del Toro has made a movie as great as the way he thinks.
Went and saw the midnight screening on thursday and I enjoyed it a lot way better than the first. This movie is definetly a feast for the eyes the creatures the set pieces all of it is phenominal. Only reason it didnt get a perfect score was because I wanted to see ABE get his nut off but I guess they made up for it for drunken barry manilow sing-along. Seth Macfarlane was a plus as well.
Like most (if not every) Del Toro's films, Hellboy 2 it's a visual masterpiece, the creatures and realms are just great and realistic, Dough Jones delivers again a great preformance under the suits (3 to be exact), although at moments (you'll know when) the film gets a "Men in Black" feel, with that being said, I got to add that the action sequences are top notch but there is a moment where the plot drags for quite sometime, and the the balance is lost, is still "a must see film", just don't see it on the midnight showing, or if you are too tired, because you will somehow get bored or lost, specially if you are not a fanboy, the ending was very interesting, although the last minute seemed somehow not the best way to end the film, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did...
I found this to be one of the most enjoyable fantasy/action/adventure flix I've seen in a long while. The characters are well done and that's really what makes t so special because the numerous creatures and special effects serve the plot, not the other way around. But WOW, as far as visuals go, the movie was pretty breathtaking. The scene with the angel of death (the thing with the eyes on it's wings) is comparable to the scene with the "pale man" in pans labyrinth. The film is a real delight.
What can I say This movie was great. Everything was good, it made me laugh and look at this film in wonder very much like when I saw Star Wars for the first time. Its amazing. Its not revolutionary as Star Wars but it has that sense of Awe. There are so many creatures you'll need to see it twice to catch it all. Its better than Hellboy and one of the best comic book films made. Cant wait for part 3.
Good movie all around some parts made hellboy more "human" character especially against the Elemental which had a beautiful but sad death kind of like the last guy to die in MGS4(can't spoil who it is but I'm talking about the guy who dies five seconds before the final part of the credit rolls). Abe and red drunk were funny. The romance between Nala and Abe was genuine in the way that they where like kids would look at each other and giggle because none of them have ever been in love before and Abe showed he truly loved the woman by nearly dooming the world. The whole Hellboy/Liz thing that went on through the movie got a little stupid especially right before the credits. It was great on action sequence especially with then new guy doing what he did with one of the golden army guys. the feeling of the movie kind of broke with Hellboy and his relationship with the humans who suddenly freaked out after he saved a baby. over all it was a good movie a decent sequel and I wish to know more about other members of the BPRD but at the same time, don't want to go looking through the comics just to miss one newer issue and have to wait for the TP to come out.
Loved it. Not as good as the original, but it was certainly better than some of the crap that gets into theaters. And Selma Blair is absolutely gorgeous in this film.
Enjoyable? Yes, HB II definitely had its moments; but in the end, I felt like I was watching a Hellboy parody. Hellboy (the character) is "funny" because of who he is. The extra gags were, in my opinion, unecessary and annoying.
