OK, so I caught this film awhile back on television, watched about 30 minutes, figured it was some low-budget piece of crap, and changed the channel. Then, a year or so later, I caught it again, and this time gave it a chance, never knowing that Hooper was the man behind it. The second time I finished it, and you know what? It's really not that bad. It seems obvious that this film is meant to be on the quirky side, and for that I appreciate it. Unfortunately, that's also the biggest flaws. Tonally, the film doesn't know what to be. One minute a bumbling cop is talking about "cemetery babies" in the style of DEAD ALIVE, the next moment it's trying to deliver legitimate scares. I firmly believe that as filmmakers, it's important to pick a tone, and commit. The CGI was terrible, but the dialogue was clever, the characters interesting, and the set pieces were really cool. I suggest everyone who loves a good campy horror flick, forget this is a Tobe Hooper flick for a moment, and give this one another chance. You may be surprised.
I wanted to give this movie half a chance when I saw that Denise Crosby of Star Trek fame was in it. I also knew the son from something. Something recent. The movie itself could have been done really well. Done well it was not. It started off all right, I'll give it that, but it didn't get better. In fact it got worse. For a movie that was made in the past three years the special effects were laughable, there were no truely 'scary' moments and the only thing that made me even remotely want to throw up was when she was sewing up the corpse- her arm.
