The good
This movie has a amazing look to it and the gore and special effects are awesome. The very ending in the church was fucking awesome
The Bad
Wow what bad acting, the little girl has to be one of the worst child actors that has ever been in a film. Once the film introduces us to the towns people shit just goes right downhill, we don't want to see townspeople because it just kills the mood of the movie. The movie does best as you are following the mother alone through the town and the makers should have focused on that.

this my favorite game of all time, it was actually my first game in playstation so ive been obsessed with it for a long time...best adaptation to a game ever! awesome movie.

Christophe Gans faithfully recreates the atmosphere of Silent Hill, with camera angles, visuals, sound effects and music reminiscent of the games (in fact it uses the same composer from the games). Such great hellish imagery too, especially with the "otherworld" sequences, it is like being transported directly to hell.
Another thing I like is the actresses he chose - Alice Krige (who could forget her as the Borg Queen), Radha Mitchell (very beautiful, she was in Pitch Black), Laurie Holden (great in The Mist), Deborah Kara Unger (hot actress, liked her in The Game and Crash), Jodelle Ferland (amazing little girl who did great in Terry Gilliam's Tideland).
But the sequences with Sean Bean and Kim Coates are a little boring and exposition-heavy (apparently he was forced to include them in the movie, for lack of male presence). But they don't drag the movie down necessarily.
The dialogue doesn't bother me because the game's dialogue is similar. Frankly I think they improved the dialogue from the game.
I don't care though that's it's not 100% faithful to plotlines of the games, like I said they at least gave us the atmosphere of Silent Hill and that's all I wanted. Hopefully for the sequel they will take the concept much further as the other games did.
Overall it's not perfect but as a Silent Hill movie it's awesome plus it's my favourite video game-based movie of all time.

I'm a big gamer, and this movie is one of the few vg adaptations I enjoyed. This was a full price movie for me.

I've never seen something so stupid in all my life! IT was a daft senseless load of old crap! Everything was just too over the top and the ending just didn't seem to make sense making it's overlong running time seem like a waste of time. The effects wern't that good, you could tell everything looked really fake. It's just too daft for words, please don't bother watching this piece of shit

I never played the video games so I didn't know what to expect , but the monsters in this film are fuckin freaky. The ending was kind of weird, but overall a really good horror film, if you haven't seen it, check it out.
Has a movie, I think it was a bit empty... the plot could have been much better.
But it was quite like the game that originated the movie, and I liked the special effects and the potography a lot.
This is one way to spoil a great, classic video game, by making a terrible "horror" movie based on it. Silent Hill has no relevance to the games at all, except the setting, and some of the creatures. I was highly dissapointed when I watched this movie. The acting sucked, the CGI wasn't even that good, and it wasn't that gory or scary at all. Although, I liked some of the monsters in the movie, some were really creepy looking, but nothing to scare the shit out of you! The annoying siren ever five minutes, the horrible ending and the stupid acting, these guys should be ashamed of them selves. Avoid this if your decent enough to call yourself a horror fan.
Even though it doesn't necessarily and strictly stick to the original story of the game I have to say I love this movie.
They managed to recreate the creepy and nerve-recking atmosphere that keeps you alert and tensed up when you play the game. The characters are great too and they made Pyramid Head and the nurses look more awesome than ever [thankfully they kept the look of them in Silent Hill: Homecoming]. They also managed to make me wonder how in hell I managed to follow the clues in the game.
Great movie if you decide not to think of it as a follow up of the games, and if you've played the games and you don't mind the story not being loyal to the first three games of the franchise but being as alternative as the last two games. If you hated SH: The Room and Homecoming, then just don't watch the movie or you'll hate it too.
Like Resident Evil, this is the only other movie turned from video game to movie that I really enjoyed. It annoys me that people dog this movie as if they were fucken Siskel and Ebert. It's a horror movie people! I enjoyed the creepy monsters and think they lived up to the ones in the game. The characters themselves are memorable especially Dahlia, Alessa/Sharon, and Christabella who portray the demented side and twisted souls that are trapped in Silent Hill. I loved the religious undertones that this movie portrayed and it perfectly embodies how people do the most carnal things in the name of their religion. The town of Silent Hill is a character within itself and in the history of horror movies when has there ever been a whole town that was made haunted and in a good way? Also if you've played the games and are a fan of them you will definitely enjoy this movie, unless of course you're like so many of whiny people below who can't even enjoy a good horror movie because they've been completely desensitized by all the other crap that passes as horror these days.
This movie had a lot of potential, but it failed to live up to it. There were glaring cases of plot stupidity displayed by the main cast of characters, and there were too many actors in the movie.
Minor spoilers below, you have been warned.
Cast:
Why they showed the husband at all was beyond me: his presence in the movie was pointless frustrating padding. You could cut him out entirely and the movie would flow much better. He interrupts the flow of the movie and nothing more.
Cybil was given the plot stupidity ball in the cast. She essentially dies because the plot demanded she do so. There was no reason for it at all, other than for a 'cheap grossout scene/death', viewers who want a well written plot and characterisation will be yelling at the screen.
In general, the cast of characters in this totally subtract from the survival horror aspect of the movie. We are presented with a dark desolate lonely environment, that in and of itself can scare you with its atmosphere, and then they populate it and ruin it with loud mouthed characters. Well done.
Monsters:
Pyramid head had absolutely no place in this movie. The things that the directors seemed to totally miss as a point was that the monsters presented in Silent Hill are the inner demons of the protagonists, and represent aspects of themselves. They represent their sins and their failings. Yet here is one of the visual sins of the second games main character, seemingly presented because he is 'scary'. I'm sorry directors, but it does not work that way, you seem to totally miss the point of silent hill in general. Additionally we see the zombie nurses return. Again, for seemingly no other reason than they are 'scary'. Not.
Visually, the movie is stuning, and it is for the environment that I am giving this movie 5 stars, they did a great job on the visual appeal of the movie. Its such a shame that they missed what Silent Hill is.
if you are a fan of the games, you'll want to shut off your brain before watching this and you might enjoy it as long as you can ignore plot stupidity. If you do not know much about the games and what silent hill represents, you might find a decent movie you might enjoy.
A beautiful but empty fantasy (unintentional?) horror-drama based on the highly acclaimed psychological, uncomfortable and gripping videogame franchise.
Christophe Gans and his crew provides a visual masterpiece, a magnificent sound portion and striking atmosphere, not to mention an excellent, intriguing cast. Unfortunately, it suffers from highly inconsistent narrative and structure, a notable lack of suggestive suspense, tension and danger, and the jaded plot and its shallow, empty characters are incapable of engaging. Furthermore, Roger Avary's dialogue is in overall surpringly dull, idle and pointless.
It's ironic, really... Given all the potential and extended passion, Silent Hill could have been the first decent film based on a videogame without exceptions, it could in some extent have reinvented the horror-genre, but turned out more or less as disappointing as Resident Evil or Doom, but better than Alone in the Dark, but worse than Hitman.
Each and every visual and audio aspect has been considered and carefully thought of, recreating the games' beautiful and intimidating sceneries and beyond, however, an intriguing plot and organic, emotional characters - the games' two remaining vital aspects beside visuals and sound - don't exist.
I don't know if anyone has mentianed this or not but the look of the town was inspired by the town Centrailia PA. I'm not sure about the game because I've never played it but the movie was kinda creepy.
I honestly think that people who are commenting the rude and not true stuff didn't play the games first. The movie DID make perfect sense, though not completely true to the game, it was a great movie. If you are a person who thinks about things going on instead of just waiting for someone to die, THEN you would get the movies plot.
This movie was great. Awesome special fx. Not too scary per say, but it was down right shocking at times. The only negative for me was that the actress that played the female cop came off as really cheesy when they introduce her character, but she redeems her self because even though her acting wasnt spot on >>>*spoiler* when she dies so horribly, I did feel for her and felt uncomftorable during the scene <<<<<*spoiler over
I don't like the games and never played them for more than an hour and I still loved this movie.
About as a great as a video game to film movie as you can get. The translation is lost along the way to becoming a big budget Hollywood horror film, but it holds its own and is pretty decent; got nothing on any of the games, but it's certainly better than most horror movies that get crapped out every year.
It's got a great atmosphere, some moderately creepy moments and some cool cinematography. The climax is particularly gory and bad ass, but hardcore fans might be turned off by the film's lack of subtlety and the cluttered amount of characters.
Love the town and the way they brought the characters and atmospheres to life. I guess one must play the game to enjoy it and follow along, but if you have played the game, this is nice eye-candy to further prove to us how Silent Hill is one strange town with a freaked up past, and a world of unknown evils. The parallel storyline between the main character and her husband was beautiful. I loved the way one was one place, the other at the same place with a different condition. Amazing but yet it has been done before..funny huh? Very gorgeous imagrey in that..demented way. Pretty creatures and sick-vommit things..you'll see. The ending needs to stop being bitched about, it's appropriate. Shut up and watch, the ending won't change to fulfill your personal lust for a utopian ending. It's Silent Hill people, plain and simple. Silent Hill is a huge thing to try to capture for a movie..especially when it's comming from something that already exists on a video game, as oppose to a book. But yet, I do think the matching of game to film was executed nicely, with flaws of course, but not enough to destroy the film. It's freaky stuff, try it.
I'm starting to think BD reviews are not worth the word document there typed on. This movie sucked, not only sucked but was complete shit.
Worst plot ever, nothing made sense even in a video game movie u should have some fucking clue how to piece together a film. They went out of there way to ruin what could of been a really good movie.
Another video game-turned-movie that FAILED. The biggest disappointment in my entire life, I can't believe I was looking forward to this when it was in theatres... it had it's moments, such as the Pyramid Head scene.. but other than that, it was super boring. I can't believe they would do such a thing to one of the best survival horror games ever made.
I liked the overall mood and atmosphere of the movie. I also think that the town was eerie and the story was pretty good. The only major problem I had with this movie was all the cg.The movie over did it. The creatures didn't even look scary, which was a disappointment because they had a lot of potential to look disturbing. I also think that the fact that the movie was filmed like a video game was a bad idea. It would looked better and scarier if it was filmed like a normal movie.
THis one was okay. the lady cop was distracting (not in a good way)... She was a horrible actress. everythign else was good. extra points for final act.
THIS IS ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE HORROR MOVIES EVER!!!
IT'S SO AWESOME !! IT HAS AN HELL OF AN ATMOSPHERE!!
the best thing about it, is that it has an story behind the horror and everything !!!
this is a horror must-see !!!
I'm a huge, HUGE fan of all of the games and this movie is great just like them. It has the same creepy atmosphere and cool visuals the game does. Also loved how the last game incorporated elements from this movie into it. Love the whole Silent Hill universe.
a complete and utter abomination to the game :( it almost made me like less the game itself, thank god i didn't watch it till the end or it could have ruined the game for me for life!
honestly, can't these greedy bastards leave at least ONE good game unspoiled! why, oh god, why do they feel the need to f*** up everything they can get their hands on? have some mercy, for f*** sake!
as a fan of the games i thought they did a great job with this movie! it felt looked and even sounded like the game with ample gore and good acting this is one to watch for sure.
This movie is great!
But not th same as the first game, same plot, but MOST things are different, which makes this movie awesome.
Its one movie to see Over and Over again...
I recommend it to everyone
Jesus. One of the worst films of the decade. Unintentionally funny, uninteresting, devoid of any real scares... atrocious acting. I could not wait for this to end. Avoid like the plague.

I thought this movie was really good. As far as Video Game Movies go I put this one above all the rest, especially Resident Evil.
Silent Hill is the best Video game Film ever made! It had a good story from the first video game, but it was modified from the games story because it can't be exactly the same. Pyramid Head was awesome in this movie, and the creatures were very well created. It just lacked the disturbing Horror and Creepiness that Silent Hill is; it wasn't that scary. Silent Hill needed more gore like in the Video game. Adam Mason The Director of "The Devil's Chair" should direct "Silent Hill 2" movie, he could make it Disturbing and Scary like the Video games. I was glad to see that The Silent Hill Town came to life in the film. This film didn't have to typical Hollywood Ending of Happily Ever after...because its a Horror movie!! Its has a Silent Hill ending and hopefully they make a sequel that continues the story. This Film is much better than The Resident Evil movies that have come out, its True Horror at its best, I recommend watching this film if your a horror fan.
This movie had its good points but it also had many bad ones as well. The video games were much better than the film, by far. The movie was very good from the beginning to the middle but it lost alot toward the end. The movie was very dark and once you entered silent hill, you never seemed to see the sun. The characters were ok but never that indepth. The scenes with the exicutioner were probably my favorite becuase he was pretty bad ass when he skinned that girl alive, probably the best scene in whole movie. However the ending just didn't do it for me, the whole part where she had to go through the basemant was good but the story line started to kind of drag and you kind of became lost. I really enjoyed the cop becuase she was kick ass but overall I would give this movie a 6/10. Any REAL horror movie fan would not enjoy this movie, however anyone whose horror knowledge spans from friday the 13th to scream you may enjoy it.

OMG!!!!! this movie was amazing... this is coming from someone who has never played the game before! once i played the game after seeing this movie i was astounded and had to see it a second time...
I don't know why I like this movie so much. It employs virtually every annoying and nerd-rage-inducing (for me personally) cliche of this decade's style of horror film... yet... I love this movie. It's one of those movies I can pop into the DVD player as a fun background, and never get tired of... I have no explanation. lol
Silent Hill is easily the best video game movie adaptation that has ever been made. This movie may be more difficult on the viewers without prior exposure to Silent Hill through the video games. Fans of the video game will understand more; however, fans will be far more critical. The movie cannot be compared to the video games. The artistic integrity remains similar between the movie and the games, but not much else does. You cannot say that the movie lacks the story and character development that the games provide because the movie is 2 hours long where the games are 10 hours long. Certainly the movie will pale in comparison. I didn't hold the movie to the same standards as the game, which is why I enjoyed it more than other gamers. The greatest death scene of all time is in Silent Hill: Pyramid Head's decortication of Anna on the church steps. Beautiful movie.
Never played the game so didn't know what to expect. The atmosphere was pretty good and the film makers did a good a job with the overall feel , very creative. I loved the ash raining burnt down town and the creatures were outstanding. I thought it dragged in some spots and didn't know where it was heading but when it all started to come together I was quite like suprised. Worth a watch.
This movie isn't bad. I've never played the games, so I don't know how accurate it is, but it's an entertaining movie nonetheless.
The budget is large and the creatures are scary as hell, and the film is beautiful to watch, but it's too long and the story is very hard to follow. It's worth a watch though.
Now I liked this movie up to a point .... the end maybe because I have not played the game, I dont understand what happen ... But over all good movie !!!

Great Movie

Not knowing a thing about the video game i feel the film lacked anything of good interest or entertainment, some visuals were downright beautiful scenary but then destroyed by silly plot with uninteresting characters.
perhaps this shoudl be only seen by fans failiar with the game
i loveddd this movie! i never played the game, so im not exactly sure how consistent it was with the video game. but from what ive seen, i thought this movie was brilliat. alice krige who played christabella did a great job portraying her! she made me actually hate her character. over-all i would highly recommend this movie
I actually watched this film in the theater without ever having played the games. I thought the movie was very good, until I finally did play the games. After playing them, specifically 2 and 3 (cannot find 1 and didn't care for 4) I found that I loved the games and decided that the movie just didn't do them justice. I still enjoy the film but it is not nearly as intense, creepy and deep as the games were. The games have better plots and characters and hell; even the acting and soundtrack is better. The film by comparison is actually quite dull, it could have been much better. With that said however the movie is still the best video game adaptation I have yet seen and the end slaughter sequence is truly memorable.
we went to see it having played the games and loved it from the first frame to the last.
clearly, this movie wasn't made for people unfamiliar with the games, but it isn't a bad thing at all.
and if I think of how awfully the resident evil movies disconnected themselves from their brilliant source.... the silent hill movie was filmed by a man who kept the games in mind throughout the whole process. and it shows.
As a huge fan of the games, I was vastly disappointed by Christope Gans' adaptation of the source material.
"Silent Hill" attempts the atmoshpere of the games by, most notably, immitating the look. However, the films lacks any of the character and plot depth, suspense, or cleverness of the games. This is most apparently due to the awful screenplay and writing by Roger Avary. I don't mean to blame Gans too harshly, because as we've seen with "Le Pacte des loups" (a.k.a. "Brotherhood of the Wolf"), the man has talent. But all of the directing effort couldn't save the half-hearted writing.
The acting is also laughably bad and although Jodelle Ferland is just a little girl, won't can't help but cringe their teeth when watching her performance. Laurie Holden and Tanya Allen are also notably bad. However, I don't beleive it is the actors that are at fault but rather the lack of material they were given to work with.
Other parts of the film that are meant to be scary also come off as unintentionally humorous as well. As much as I watched to like "Silent Hill", I couldn't wait to leave. The ending is rather ambigious and I have a feeling that even those who have played the games will be scratching their heads after watching the film, I know I did.
i love this movie! its really dark though so its kinda hard to see some stuff and the first time i saw it i was kind of like wtf just happened but i got it after i saw it again
I loved the video game series and I was so excited when I saw they were making a Silent Hill movie. Ya the Resident Evil movies were okay but this was just awesome. The movie had such a creepy vibe to it just like the video games. I thought they did an excellent job making this video game into a movie. It is one of my favorite horror movies to date.
Very good. A little boring in the middle. I was confused on the ending, but then I got it. I have never played the games, but I wanted to see it. I enjoyed it.
This is one of my top favorite movies. I think it is really well done and since the ending wasn't completely clear, it stayed in my mind for a long time. It never gets old no matter how many times I watch it either. Great acting and effects btw.
If you have never played the games this is a great movie. scary and well made. But if you know the games, the movie really just doesnt do it for you. That being said its still fun to watch. VERY well made.
Having not really played the games before I went to see this movie in the cinema I can't really complain about the things that were wrong (As the person I went with did).
The film is really good. the tension is built up really well by waiting for the sirien to sound and wondering what monsters are going to come out of the dark.
However it does tend to drag on a little bit towards the end and the end is a bit predictable. Really any horror movies with Sean Bean in it is never going to be that good. :P
If you like being CGed to death, this is the film for you. The way the movie reveals all the evil things in the town is good and it kept the movie going. Unfortunately that's probably the only thing I saw that kept it going because the plot I felt was slow in developing and and not so scary.
i watched this on encore mystery the other night. I thought the beginning was good but the rst was pretty boring. not scary at all. i got kinda confused. worth seeing if you are a fan of the video game.

This was never scary it was actually pretty mundane best part was the church skinned splatter scene as video game movies based in the horror genre THIS WAS THE BEST when it came down to plain horror and sticking true to video game story(it was SH2 with a female lead instead of male) but that's not saying much with resident evil being the only big rival but then again RE was more of a action horror then a survival horror which the game is based on just like Silent hill is based on a Survival horror I loved the ending and always leaves sequels and prequels such as what happened the week that officer was with the kid in the mine shaft it could have her thinking she's being delusional and seeing the monster but REALLY IS seeing them. They pretty much screwed up any possibility of making a true transition of from a video game of 1 2 or orgins if they want to tie this movie in, because they jacked how Alissa was saved (in offical game canon she's saved by the lead of origins) and they pretty much tied 1 and 2 together into this one with a lead that resembles 3's lead. One of the best video game movies next to Postal the movie but not a good movie all together 3.5 skulls or 7 out of 10
