You know, this was the first movie by Jeunet that I ever saw. Since I've seen others, including 'Amelie' and 'The City of Lost Children,' and really enjoyed them. 'Resurrection' totally failed, but I don't blame Jeunet.
I've heard from friends who love Joss Whedon that Fox tore his script apart and that's why the movie was ruined, but I'm not so sure it could have ever been good. There are just so many blatant inconsistencies. I mean, I don't demand realism from movies (in every 'Alien' film, the ships make sounds in space) but this was ridiculous.
I hate to beat the inconsistencies to death like the nerd I am when there is so much more wrong with the movie, but Hell, I got 5000 characters and I'm gonna use them. The plot from the very beginning of the movie makes absolutely no sense. Ripley's DNA is cloned, she is gestated until she is about 45 years old for some reason, and then operated on to remove the Alien queen and breed it by the military. There are so many things wrong with this. Why would they need to clone Ripley? Why not just clone the queen? It's not like their blood was fucking fused or something! We could clone them seperately NOW, much less like 400 years from now. And why does she have to be fully grown? If this made sense in the first place, why not just take it out of her in the fetal stage?
Next, the whole newborn thing is ridiculous. I've dealt with the whole gene splicing thing, but the queen having to "give birth" is just retarded. And the newborn itself? A "half-man-half-alien"? That's what an alien already is! It is a creature that picks up different traits from its host species. Otherwise, it would negate the whole third movie, where the an alien develops speed and quadropedal locomotion by gestating inside a dog.
Alright, those are the biggest inconsistencies. Beyond that, the whole thing just seems over the top and silly with barely any real creative thought. Dialogue is bland and uninteresting. Ripley's character is totally ruined by turning her into just a cold, sociopathic half-human, half-alien with acid blood. She isn't sympathetic, and just leaves you wanting to see Weaver play the fiery, caring woman we have grown to love over three films. Ripley is unrelatable, Winona Ryder's character is uninteresting, and the rest of the performances are characterized by mediocre acting and dry, predictable dialogue. Ultimately the only characters I ended up liking were those played by Ron Perlman and Dominique Pinon, who probably only work because of their strength as actors and experience working with Jeunet.
The aliens are kind of cool, but I thought the triple-jointed legs were silly and just continued the betrayal of the previous films. Plus, some of the death scenes were just absurd and gratuitous, such as the general pulling out part of his brain after being tooth-tongued and the guy being held to an impregnated man's ribs so the chestburster comes through his head (although this might have been the most cathartic and exciting moment in the movie for me).
Ultimately, I couldn't take the story seriously for a minute, I felt no sympathy for any of the characters, the plot and action didn't keep me interested, and the movie was all the more repellent because of the way it repeatedly insulted a film saga I love so much. I've seen it again and again hoping to give it another chance or find something I might like, but it just never happens. I wouldn't recommend watching it, but the only things to really be entertained by are Jeunet's original direction and maybe seeing yet another appearance by one of my favorite movie monsters ever created. But overall, it seems more like an open mockery of possibly the best horror/sci-fi series ever produced and for me borders on unwatchable.
The Official Score has it right, terrible movie. Until this came out, I thought it would be impossible to make a bad Alien film.

Not half as bad as they say, but not even close to being good either.

Alien Resurrection was intresting, i enjoyed the under water scene with the aliens it was done very well. I think this film gets alot of critcism and is considered a least favorite but i enjoyed it very much so.

Very underrated flick that deviates so much from the other Alien movies (adding a lighter tone, more humour) but as a film in it's own right it is quite a unique experience among the usual big budget hollywood scifi blockbusters.
This is because of the french influence on the film by fantastic director Jean Pierre Jeunet which some think hampered it but I disagree. It earned it a unique style and elevated it to match the strong directorial styles of the other Alien films.
If it weren't for the stunning visuals, inventive gore sequences, creature effects (the Newborn is a stunning animatronic creature) and hauntingly romantic score I would like this movie alot less. But as it is there are many things going for it.
Favourite scenes: Newborn birth (utterly inspired!), Brad Dourif and imprisoned alien scene (f***ing tense), Ripley awakes (and yes there's a Christ allegory in there somewhere), Ripley confronting her clones and the underwater scene.
There's also a lesbian subtext in there with Ripley/Call, but I think you take the whole series as having this theme on sex/reproduction that runs all the way through it.
The last good movie of the Alien Saga but hopefully the Alien Prequel by Ridley Scott himself will add another worthy addition.

No...Just no. The only thing that was good in this was the Newborn and the first scene with the Aliens.
I don't know why so many hate on this movie, it's not the best in the series, but it's still a damn entertaining flick, despite it's flaws. CG sucks, usually does, but the cast is great. Ron Pearlman & Brad Doriff automatically raise this flick up some. If you ain't seen it in a while, give it another chance.
Good Lord, it wasn't THAT bad. The official review on here makes a Uwe Boll film sound like a masterpiece. It's clearly an old juvenile review. Personally I thought this film was very entertaining, interesting to look at, and superior to Alien 3. It's clearly not perfect in any way but a worth-while Hollywood installment.
The only thing that really freaked me out in this movie was the scene with the aliens swimming under the water. Apart from that....it was just confusing.
I don't think this is the train wreck everybody makes it out to be , Fuck , the AVP movies were far worse. Sure, this is no Alien or Aliens but it was better than the very lacklustre Alien 3. It was surreal and bizarre , Winona was mis cast but this one had some decent scenes and loads of blood and gore. It was directed after all by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and if you have seen Delicatessen and City Of Lost Children then you should know what to expect. At least he tried to inject something different into it with his crazy styles. I Like

I didn't think the series could get any worse. I was dead wrong. What an aweful movie. This movie rilly stinks. I can't believe they released this turkey. Did they actually look at the script. I,m not sure if they knew what they were looking at except the dollar sign. They keep releasing more movies like this the series will quickly dry up like well..
I really didn't hate this movie. Sure, the idea of Ripley having a heart for her wide forheaded "offspring" is a sad stretch for emotional writing. You can also add the cheapness of computer animation to the overall laziness of everybody involved. But I do love Ron Perlman (She's severely fuckable ain't she?") and Brad Duriff is always a creepy sonofagun. Maybe I just have low expectations overall for sequels, or I find comfort in concepts I know, even if it's lobotomized with a screwdriver into my brain.
i saw this when i was wee lil lad back when it came out and still hated wat crap what was once a great film

not a horrible movie like everyone claims it is, i found it very fun and entertaininng, the whole ripley being cloned isnt a genius idea, but a smart way to bring her back to the series i suppose.
overall a fun, non intellegent horror ride of a science fiction film that doesnt take itself seriously like the first couple did, and those will always be a favorite amungst people, but i did enjoy this

The only reason to watch this film is Sigourney Weaver's performance. I also enjoyed Ron Perlman. Winona Ryder was totally out of place in this movie. Some decent gore. Otherwise, a complete waste of time.
I don't know whether to blame the Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, or Writer Josh Whedon, or 20th Century Fox - or if I should blame all three of them for for letting the ALIEN movie franchise reach this level of crap (please do not get me started on the Newborn - which is so far removed from H.R. Giger's genius it should've never been in this film) ..... the actors; along with the set designs; were the only things to admire - but the graphic R-rating can't save this poor excuse for a movie (shame on everyone involved for releasing this crap)!
"Alien: Resurrection" sounds like a brilliant film before you watch it: from the director of "Amélie" and "The City of Lost Children", from the writer of "Serenity" and "Firefly", starring Ron Perlman, Brad Dourif, and Michael Wincott alongside Sigourney Weaver. However, the film is nowhere near as good as you expect.
I will happily admit, I enjoy the director's cut of "Alien³" and it's not just because I am a huge fan of director David Fincher. However, "Resurrection" messes with everything from the storyline to the creature design and makes a film that is far from glamorous.
Perhaps the best elements of this fourth entry in the franchise is that is contains a rather excessive amount of gore and slime, a well as features some wondrous and imaginative set designs. Jean-Pierre Jeunet does manage to create a very technically beautiful film, but without any heart or mystery behind "Alien: Resurrection" it feels very much like its main character, just a copy of the original.
Make up your own mind, you may not regret seeing A:R, but you may also not enjoy it.
This movie was just an embarrassment to the Alien franchise. It had no scares unlike all the others. It just plain sucked. I was embarrassed to own this movie.
