Have you ever watched a TV show and kind of liked it, but couldn't figure out what it was that was ruining it from being highly entertaining? The Canadian TV comedy network show entitled Puppets Who Kill did just that to me- only I was finally able to pin the tail on the donkey. The laugh track, I always hated it, especially in those episodes of Scooby-Doo. But as much as I hate it, I now understand that it is a necessary evil, laugh tracks are a MUST- along with some sort of music.
I'm sitting and relaxing to the first season of Puppets Who Kill on DVD and was enjoying it, only it felt empty and crappy. I sat there episode over episode trying to figure out what was making it suck, when I still found myself laughing at the jokes. It wasn't until I was in the shower and laughing to the thought of an episode of Get a Life, which starred Chris Elliot the super genius, that I realized what ruined the show. On the second DVD of Get a Life you can actually turn off the laugh track and watch the shows- it's unbelievable how BORING the show is without that little extra pizzazz. Puppets Who Kill is silent, no laughs, barely any music- pretty much nothing- and it ruins the experience. I really like the show, and I loved the premise of each episode, but without the extra sounds it was flat and totally missing that 'extra something'. But even though it ruined a little fun for me, the show still is pretty cool, I mean, it IS about Puppets Who Kill...
The show takes place in a halfway house for very bad puppets and features four felonious puppet inmates (Bill, Buttons, Cuddles, Rocko) who are doing time with their human caseworker as they wait until that glorious day when they can be re-integrated back into society... but it's not so easy. They're conniving, dangerous, self-centered and bitter. They're the anti-Muppets. Puppets Who Kill is set in the real world. The puppets are treated as if they're alive and interact with people, deceiving, cheating, and backstabbing them. They'll stop at nothing to advance their own agenda - pretty much like the people around them.
Bill is the 'human' looking puppet, who enjoys murdering people and collecting things. One of my favorite episodes he starts collecting Brains of famous Candians on TV- on another- human testicles! Buttons is the pimp of the crew, his soft soft fur makes him irresistible to woman. What as he seduces the best of them! Cuddles is the baby of the crew who experiments with sex and being cute. Rocko is a dog puppet, who is mean selfish and threatens to kill if he doesnt get his way. Watch out for this bad boy.
The acting is no better than anything youd see on Comedy Central here in the States, but the ideas that are meshed into each episode can be so freaking brilliant! My absolute favorite episode was when buttons was sent to have a one on one interview with one of the most gutless and ruthless reporters in the town about their halfway house. Buttons was told that this reporter only likes the men of men, which means you don't get up to pee during the lunch/interview. When the interview comes around, buttons is pacing himself while the reporter is chugging beer. Buttons things hes in for the gold, but the guy has a bladder the size of Texas. Next thing you know buttons is holding on for dear life!
Great characters, a nice variety of puppets, brilliant plots and killer puppets- what more could you ask for? If you've got the money, or are in dyer need for something new in your movie-viewing life, Puppets Who Kill is the DVD set for you. Although it's not the most incredible thing you've ever seen, it is something you really can sit down and enjoy with a couple beers of your own.
You can pick this two-DVD set up for only $13.97 at Amazon.com!
