Great zombie movie. Actors, special effects, scares, and comedy were all great. Enjoyed this one and it also has some really good special features on the unrated dvd version. Good addition to any collection.
awesome zombie film, i don't thinK George Romero could've done better
the violence was awesome, the story made sense and having a baby zombie was pretty creative, but can anyone look at some of the actors and not say they look similar to some of the stars of 'Scary Movie'?

I indeed enjoyed this more then the original probably because of the actors and the effects. The zombies were a upgrade in my opinon. I like to watch it every once in a great while
I don't really see this as a remake of romeros classic.
this is just one of the best zombie flicks of today.
the beginning puches you right in the face. starting with mayhem everywhere!
I loved the original and was a bit worried because I could never imagine this remake could stand up to the original. But I was sooooo wonderfully surprised! I saw it opening night and was floored and wanted to watch it again! Once of the best opening scenes ever, fast, brutal, gory- perfection. And Sarah Polley?? Wow girl you stole the whole show from me, I am a huge fan now. Of coure Ving Rhames rocked it too. I don't think of it as a remake as much because I was so into the movie the whole time I wasn't thinking much about the original! I love the part where they are on the roof shooting zombies, freakin' hilarious!! Great gore, suspense, acting, and story!

Great zombie movie, my favorite of the 'Dead' series.

As far as "Remakes" go, this Movie Rocks! It's very entertaining! The only real thing it has in common with the original Dawn of the Dead, is the Shopping Mall where a majority of the Action takes place, and the Survivors who end up there just trying to make it out alive! It is it's own Movie and stands on it's own Merit! From the Opening Sequence to the "Johnny Cash, when the Man comes around" musical opening Credits, this Movie is truly amazing! Basically the plot like the Original is simple, a Group of Survivors Baracade themselves in a Shopping Mall and while trying to survive and keep away from all the mayham outside, they form this unique, Disfunctional "Family" Unit and try to bring some kind of "Normalcy" to their Lives, of course all Hell will eventually break loose and they'll be forced to Flee their "Fortress/Prison in the hopes of once again Surviving! Shot Beautifully, well acted, well written with Drawn out Characters that you grow to care for as well as great make-up and special effects! This Movie probably has it all, although when You get to the very end of the Movie, your left wondering what happened to our Survivors, for the very place they escaped to, an Island that you'd think would not be populated by the Living Dead and yet is, your left to ponder, did they escape, get "Ate" up or still perhaps lost at Sea? I've always Hoped they would eventually do a Sequel to this Film and explain this or at the very least perhaps introduce new Characters facing the same problem as our Mall RATS! Between this Movie when it came out, and George Romero's "Land of the Dead" which too is a great film btw, and an actuall "remake" of "Day of the Dead" that went straight to Video and really had little to do with the Original it was based upon and the fact that one of our Stars from this Film is actually in the Remake of Day of the Dead "Ving Rames" only adds to the confusion as to which Film goes to which group, although like I stated above, to me, this Movie stands on it's own and with the exception of using the Dawn of the Dead Title, really is in fact its own original "more or less" Zombie Film!
Dawn Of The Dead is the remake of the classic. I never thought that this remake could be so good, but it was. This is what pure zombie terror should be like, blood, guts and gore. This is a truly terrifiing zombie horror movie, with some stunning set pieces and special effects. Although, I didn't like the acting that much, some of it was really crap. But, despite this, everything else rocked!
8/10

one of my favorite zombie flicks.
it was creepy, it was bloody, and it was just down right the best remake ever made.
i know what you want to ask me and yes, i do believe this remake is better than the original dawn of the dead.
dont get me wrong, i liked the original dawn of the dead but this one is alot more enjoyable.
Loved it! This is one of my favorite horror films involving zombies. I'm not the biggest fan of the whole zombie horror flicks. But this movie just kicked ass! I did not really like the original one, it was slow, boring, nothing ever even happended. but this was a great remake, this is the way "dawn of the dead" should be!
I have to say this is one of the few Zombie movies that I really like. The head shots are the best I have seen so far. But I think there could have been more danger in the mall. Need more Zombies but after that it is a great movie and I love how they all die at the end great way to take the breath away from people. This is a must see movie for anyone who love Zombies.
Surprisingly energetic and entertaing remake (mostly only in name & premise) of the Great One. A lot of fresh ideas & some genuine tension, it won't disappoint.
I don't even know where to begin, ohh wait yes I do. As a HUGE zombie fan and of the Romero films this was a must see, obviously. But thinking this wasn't a Romero film I didn't know what to expect. This was honestly one of the greatest zombie horrors of all time! From start to finish there are always moments grabbing your attention, even people with sleeping disorders couldn't doze off to this one. Now for the dreaded baby scene. There was a lot of fray about this scene but in the eyes of me an infected baby is just brilliant! Writer James Gunn is a zombie genius I just hope him and Zach Snyder can create some more Zombie gold!
WOW, this movie was a good remake of a genuis's vision... When I first thought of fast moving ZOMBIES I thought thats horrible, but zombies that move are scary as hell and I tell ya now I love both... Zombies rock and I can't get enough, zombie fans this is must see and a top of the line movie...
I have yet to see the original Dawn of the Dead, but from what I have heard and seen in the original trailer, it is an absolute classic and one of the best sequels ever. Well, this movie is nothing short of a classic when it comes to the zombie subgenre and is one of the best remakes I have ever seen. Director Zack Snyder delivers a kick-ass zombie film that is gory, energetic, and terrifying. Although this film was his theatrical debut, Snyder gives a film that is so close to being perfect you can almost feel it. But I’ll give him 10 out of 10 because of the entertainment value this movie provides. Out of all the times I have watched this movie, I have never checked to see how much of it was left. That is how engaging it is. The film is also very engaging because of its characters. This film provides characters that you care about from the start or begin to care about as the film progresses (with the exception of a few). As each character goes through an ordeal (there are many), you feel as if you want to relate to those characters and what they are experiencing. For example, the scenes with Nicole’s dad. How can you not feel sad when they reveal to them that the dad has to die because he was bitten, or when Nicole and her dad are expressing their final goodbyes? Normally, people would not try to connect to a character that way, but this film has a certain power that few films have that makes you express that sadness with them. Immediately, you begin to care about characters like Ana, Kenneth, Michael, Andre, Luda, Nicole, Tucker, Terry (I guess), Lewis (even though he dies within the first ten minutes of the film), etc. Even though he starts off as a rough asshole, you begin to care about CJ as the film progresses. Unfortunately, you never really care about Bart. He change a little before he dies, but you only remember him as a douchebag lackey for CJ. And , of course, there is Steve, the metrosexual, self-centered, womanizing asshole who only cares about himself and his many pleasures. When Ana finally shoots him in the head, one feels a sense of relief that he is finally out of the way. It is hard to point the flaws with this film because there are barely any. I guess the other flaw is the cheesy CGI the film uses from time to time. But, who really cares? The film keeps you entertained enough that you push all of its flaws aside and enjoy yourself. Now, there are many positives about this film. First, the zombies are terrifying. The one way you make a zombie scarier is by making it run. Now, I admire George A. Romero and his zombie films, but the slow walking zombies after a while become less scary and more campy. Thank God, that George A. Romero makes walking zombies scary, though. Another plus about this movie is the acting. Almost everyone does a fine job acting in this film, even the actors who are given cameos. It is funny how they gave the role of a sheriff to Tom Savini, who was a leather jacket-wearing vigilante with a machete in the original. It was also nice to see Ken Foree being cast as the televangelist, so he could say the famous lines, “When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth. Another positive is the gore. Oh, the glorious, glorious gore. I am a huge fan of the red stuff and when the film was over, I had a goregasm, if you will. Zack Snyder and the special effects crew were not shy to let out loads of gore, and I thank them for it. Anyway, Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead is an amazing zombie film, remake, and theatrical debut and I can’t wait until Zack Snyder returns to horror. Along with Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, it is one of the best zombie films in quite some time, and along with Shaun of the Dead, it makes 2004 the year of the zombie.
I'm very torn on my views toward this remake. On the one hand it took Romero's classic and added a fresh new look at the zombies and the film. On the other hand, if it ain't broke don't fix it. The director didn't stray TOO far from the original, the mall is there, so is the story, but thats where it stops. The rest is fresh and new. And while the acting was pretty good, Mikai Pfeifer...I can't take him seriously. And alot of the scenes seemed forced. Especially the birth giving scene. The ending left alot to be desired as well. While the effects were great and the story taking an artistic direction to the left of Romero's vision, it was still a worthy film. It sounds as if I'm complaining, I know, but when comparing to the original...Its going to fall short. as a stand alone film, the flaws weren't enough to stop me from having a good time.
ok reboot, but not as good as the original. Being a true Dawn fan, I hesitated seeing this film. It was decent. Like said below...the first part and end were the best.
This is my favorite zombie movie i've seen so far(besides quarantine if you count that as a zombie movie)...this movie scared the hell out of me!!! Everything starts off so quickly nd the terror gets scarier and scarier and the ombies keep coming and coming....The acting is brilliant especially Sarah Polley she needs to be in more horror movies...there's alot of blood in this movie and i have to say it is one of the best remakes ever!!!
Best zombie flick of all time hands down! I think making the zombies run was genius, although their not the first movie to have running zombies, this movie executed it the best. Those slow zombies just aren't scary to me anymore, you can beat the crap out of those zombies. Which is why this movie was a blast. I think Zack Snyder should make a sequel with the survivors from the first that would be cool.
Awesome. This movie has got to be my favourite zombie movie of all time. The humour thats added in, is surprisingly tasteful and fits in which is hard to do. The more characters this time around, makes the film better becuase their is more people to be killed. The gore in this movie is really great, and many scenes in this movie won't be forgotten quickly. A zombie baby is born, which is one of the greatest scenes in the film, that scene is so chillingly cool, it hurts. The movie is definately a step up for modern remakes, and is a must of 04'.
The plot is alot better than the originals, because there is alot more people to run the film along, and the characters are really likeable and the more the film eventuates the better you like them. Alot of scenes in the movie have humour added, which is okay, but it's one of the rare occasions where this genre can have comedy.
The acting is really believable and it's as if it's really happening. "Lindy Booth" shows versitility in this, than from her previous role as Francince in "Wrong Turn". "Sarah Rolley" is to me in her breakout role, and she was really well at making you beleive what was going on.
Overall "Danw Of The Dead" is a gore filles, great horro flick, that is a great remake, and a great film for the zombie genre. My rating is 3.5/5

I just can't get enough of this movie. It's violent, scary, funny, creative, and has a very, very intense ending. I saw this movie in the theaters and since that day, every time I hear someone mention this movie all I can think of is watching the credits in the theater, seeing the cast get picked off one by one. One of the few 10/10s I plan on giving here.
Awesome movie! Even though it's a remake of an incredible original the movie stands on it's own, I hate to say it but I think it surpasses the original a bit, taking nothing away from George's classic, this movie really brought my love of zombie flicks back up front, much like the night of the living dead remake did, only this one is better. If you are a fan of zombie horror this movie will not disappoint.
The only standout part of this film is the first 10 min. This script could have taken place anywhere, and its like they just wrote in the mall location so they could call it "Dawn". Not to say i dont enjoy creativity in remakes, but this was way too far removed to share the same name as one of the greatest horror films of all time. Better than Romero's Land though.

I thought that this was one of the best zombie films I have ever seen. The zombies abilty to run makes this an epic remake and true masterpiece.
Storyline: Zombie out break, group of survivors take refuge in a large mall, decide to travel away from the mall, shit hits the fan. 10/10
Acting: Really good, I love the variety of the characters and how each one deals with certain situations. 10/10
Special Effects: Sweet! Lots of blood and gore which should be present in a zombie movie and should look realistic. It ticks all those boxes. 10/10
Best Scene: When the guy who owns the gun shop gets his head blown up by the black guy with the shotgun. 10/10
Ending: Pretty sad, after all that effort and struggle and they get killed on the island by more zombies. It was actually pretty funny. :D 10/10
Overall this movie kicked ass and I would watch it many times after the first viewing. If you are a zombie fan you can't miss the remake of dawn of the dead. 9/10
Fantastic remake, kept me on the edge of my seat. Great characters played by good actors , a decent script , tension in all the right places and excellent blood and gore effects. The opening scene showing the beginning of the zombie uprising was a relentless start and this film never stops . So many thrilling set pieces make this one to watch over and over.

AMAZING movie. Loved every minute.

i compare this film to rob zombies remake of halloween. zack snyder, as well as the case with mr. zombie, have succeded in making enjoyable, fun fright flicks, with one major malfunction, their remakes. for example, if i were to remake the texas chainsaw massacre, with daniel day lewis as leatherface, george clooney as the hitchiker, and robert duvall as grandpa, it would probably be a good film with good acting and some good qualities. however, in being a remake, and trying to accomplish what the original did, it would fail. the fact the title of this film is the same as romeros classic makes the film somewhat of a bust to me. perhaps, if it had a differant title, i would be giving this movie rave reviews. stanting by itself, its a good, gory zombie shocker, but trying to compare it to romeros, with RUNNING ZOMBIES?, really? note to all directors, if you are considering remakeing a romero film, please, dont make the zombies run.
this was the best horror movie remake of them all and far better than any of the shitty movies romero is cranking out these days. snider took a old movie ramped up the blood and the story and made it his own. great film.
This is one of the worst zombie movies ever made. The acting is horrible, and the way the zombies make bizarre cat noises makes me laugh my ass off every time they are running around. I truly think House of the Dead was a better film than this. At least it didn't try and pretend it was a great movie. In between the laughable zombie attacks the movie just screeched to a hault with boring dialogue and characters who you didn't care about and were totally interchangable. The original is a classic and one of the greatest horror movies ever made, but this so-called remake is pathetic.

I loved this movie because of the fact that once again the Zombies don't just stagger around. They run after you. I called them Zombie's on Speed man. I loved this movie and bought it. Of course the fact that it made my ex husband, who was a security guard faint ten minutes in told me it had to be a great movie!
In my opinion this is one of the few remakes which actually surpasses the original (No offence to George Romero). Let me put it this way, I will rather be scared of fast running agile zombie rather than slow moving one. You can always outrun the slow ones but outrunning something who can chase you and not get tired is something which gets on to your nerves. Many George Romero fans find it pathetic but let me tell you it all depends what version you have seen first. This is because whatever you have seen first creates a nostalgia effect hard to beat. I had seen the remake first and after seeing that the original looked very cheesy. Even my young brother wasn't scared of original and he is very easy to scare but when he watched the remake that was a different story altogether. Since everyone has already gone into details therefore I won't be going into technical aspects. All I will say is that it is one of the best zombie movie ever made. Period.
As far as the new zombies movies go this is probably the best. Felt bad for Burt Reynolds and Jay Leno.

a very well made remake that is just as good as the original , but in very different ways, i liked the way the zombies moved in this one, it was different they were very terrifying seeing them run full force at you, as oppossed to the slow moving zombies, if that formula was used again in this one, it wouldnt be as affective as it turned out to be, great stuff...would like to see a direct sequel to the characters from this film.

A remake of my all time favorite horror movie, and well done!
The movie takes the basic plot of the original film and adds it's own twist to it. It doesn't exactly copy the original version scene for scene. If it did, it wouldn't be worth remaking and I hate it when directors basically say "I wanna remake this movie" then reshoot it exactly like it was with different actors. Zack Snyder did very well with this. He took the basic premises of the movie: a group of survivors band together inside a shopping mall while an outbreak of the undead spreads out all over the world. Some people complain about running zombies in this one. I think it adds to the horror. Slow moving zombies were scary as hell back in the 60s and 70s. Survivors only had certain weapons and resources back then to fight back. With current zombie movies taking place in the modern day, we have new and improved weapons and tech. Slow zombies now wouldn't be too scary at all. You could just mow them down with an M60 or stand out in the open and pick them off with a rifle as they creep towards you. What happens, however, when undead, cannibalistic corpses come charging at you at 7-10 miles an hour? Even in a group of people with guns, you're dog meat if you stand around in place.
I give this movie a 10 because it brought back memories of the original Dawn when I watched it as a kid 13 years ago. I can't point out any flaws in this movie. There are none if you ask me. Hell, this one even has a scary ending while the original had a happy ending. I recommend this film to anybody who enjoys a good scare and some nice gore shots inside a good story because Zack Snyder's remake has it all in one big mix.

this remake was a good one but the only things that was the same was the fact of people being stuck in a mall with zombies outside. and them trying to get away. the origanl dawn of the dead was about the people mainly deciding to go ahead and live in the mall and start over. both movies were good in my book. Oh and the fact they made the zombies in the remake run and have more energey was a good add on.
Zombies dont run!! Death is not a energy drink. Other than that little detail, I thought this was a very good film, the casting was spot on, Although you cant really call it a remake with the only real similarities are zombies and a mall. If they didnt call it a remake then they probably would have been sued.Top film
Its just not the same as the original. The plot line was different. Sure I enjoyed it. But it just wasn't the same enjoyment I received from the original. Original is far better. But this one was fairly decent.
"I'm not sure I can recall witnessing an opening sequence quite like the one I saw in Zack Snyder's remake of the classic horror film 'Dawn of the Dead.' Besides being rather lengthy (it's over ten minutes before we see the opening credits), it has a bizarre creepiness about it. There's something about the cinematography employed to show us 'the beginning of the end' that I really liked: that extra long image of the little girl skating away, the skyview of Sarah Polly's car as she rides home from her shift as a nurse, the picture of perfect serenity, and those intimate scenes we see of her and her husband 'the day before.' It all makes it more tragic, when, quite unexpectedly, morning comes, and with it, the end of all that is sane. The pure chaos of the scenario, an outbreak of a dangerous break of a virus that turns those infected into ghouls, comes so suddenly that it grips us by the throat.
This is one hell of a horror movie. Even for someone as jaded as myself, who has become totally jaded to any real horror thrills, I was taken aback by how uncomfortable the movie made me feel. Our heroes, holed up at the now abandoned local mall, join small groups of survivors and find themselves fighting each other as well as the zombies when the plague starts creeping ever close to bringing them all to the brink of annihilation. The zombies have an easy-to-spot weakness: one shot to the head takes them out, but they're extremely fast, and a single bite from them leads to hopeless infection and mindlessness. Although some of the story makes little sense (for instance, if the zombies can only transmit the virus by bite and the heroes are in a mall, couldn't they don the heaviest attire imaginable rather than skimpy t-shirts?), there are lots of great twists and snappy dialogue along with the required creep-outs, gore, and slaughter.
And there's some surprisingly great humor. Easily the most memorable of the light-hearted, break-the-nerves moments is when our heroes are situated atop a roof and challenge a local gun shop owner to take out look-alike zombie celebrities, which he does with ease. It's a much needed laugh to relieve the audience of a lot of built-up jitters.
Overall, this is a remake that actually works. The characters, for all their strength and weaknesses, are decently fleshed out for a horror movie. There a few unexpected surprises that even the most attentive viewer will take pleasure in. And the action moves along at a clean, fast pace. The few holes that exist in the plot and the somewhat unsatisfying conclusion are the only real problem areas, but these are to be expected in the genre. Overall, I definitely recommend it, even to the squeamish. It's messy fun for everyone. And make sure you stay until AFTER the credits roll. You'll be glad you did." --David Drebsky (Paninoguy@aol.com), imdb.com
Ok where do you start , well i remember back in the day being a snot nosed kid and my cousins showing me a pirate copy of dawn of the dead ( original ) and being more than moved , that was the start of my nw hobby . I became obsessed with horror films . So years pass George Romero blessed us with day of the dead and then BANG the re-make trend kicks off , ok the whole should they shouldnt they debate is if your a die hard fan of a film then i suppose you say No but if you have faith in the director and you know he's as much o a fan as you then you could cross your fingers and hope fo the best . BUT even thoe the texas chainsaw re-make was beyond belief and gave you more story line and more info on the Edd Gein inspired family there are some directors who's work should NOT be fucked with .Yes im a big Romero fan but even so what i watched at the cinema was far from a re-make of dawn of the dead , if your gonna pay homage to a film then you produce something like 28 days later which even as a film on its own it has several homage's to dawn of the dead .The re-make of dawn of the dead only draws one that it is set in a shopping mall thats it , yes its a great zombie film and stands up amonge the hundreds of other films but as a re-make i dont think so .Ok the zombies are great the make-up real but maybe it should have bee called someting els .
If you wanna see a top zombie film then yeh wach it but please please dont compair it to Georges work , in closeing , was there realy any need for the zombie babey did we realy need to see that , was that put in just to shock as from what i recall that all people talked about maybe that was the red herring to draw your attetion from it being a re-make.
Am I really the first negative review for this movie on here? That’s pathetic.
It was just stale and uninspired.
The beginning brought my level of hope for this movie up pretty high, and the sleek new zombies were pretty amazing. When the zombie action and scare scenes actually happened, there were simply some of the best I’ve seen on film.
Too bad action and scares only happened for 20% of the movie, and even that might be a little high. The majority of this film was just stale, boring dialogue with some comedy thrown in. I thought the comedy bits were pretty well-done, but they didn’t fit. At all. I think the scariest part of this entire movie is the main menu.
I just can’t give this movie a positive rating because I’ve seen this movie done before a hundred times—but done right. Parts of the movie reminded me of Cloverfeild, which kept the mood and setting without the pointless dialogue. Parts reminded me of the video game Dead Rising, which had complete and total zombie mayhem and massacre, whereas this movie didn’t come close.
I’m not even sure this was worth watching once because it is so dull. I haven’t seen many zombie movies, but after this I’m starting to think video games are the only entertainment form that can do zombies right.
The origia=nal is my favorite horror ever well it's a tie with BEHIND THE MASK but I was not disapointed at all with the remake of DAWN. The first 15 min of this movie is probably the most tense opener for a horror movie ever!!! I love this one and I always will!
Takes the idea in a new direction. Loved this remake. Best yet. Intense, fun, bloody, never leaves you with a bad aftertaste. And this time the zombies aren’t just purple people eaters.
Not as great as the original but still an excellent film. I thought it was scarier than the first. It took the mall scenario and they took it in a different direction. It worked great for them.
Now the original is my favorite movie of all time full stop (and Aliens). So i was so angery when this was remade, in fact i sulked until I watched it. Also when people bitch about remakes I always think about how this was amazing and The Thing.
I think I walked out with the chair under my finger nails. I truely thought it was excellent. I love the story from beginning till the end. The sense of dredd all the way through, the gore was perfect and I love the original cast being sneaked into the movie. It might be a remake, but the only similarity is the zombies and shoppng mall. Not the characters or the plot really. It's original and fresh.
Okay I Here People On Here Saying It Will Scare The Hell Out Of You.No Not Reely But It Would Be Scary if You Were Put In Their Situation. This Film Does Live Up To The Hype.
James Gunn is an amazing director. I am yet to see a movie of his that I am disappointed with. I don't think anyone could have remade Dawn of the Dead better. The movie was intense, bloody, violent and graphic.
In the first kill scene our heroine Sara Polly wakes up to see there 8-year-old nieghbor girl standing in the bedrood door way. Her husband gets up to see if the girl is alright and is bitten by the girl. From this point on it is a non-stop bloody ride of flesh eating zombies.
A small group of people board themselves up in a mall where a few have been bitten and become infected. The few left alive realize they cannot stay there forever and plan a escape.
I'm not going to ruin the ending but I was very pleased.
