In my opinion this is one of the few remakes which actually surpasses the original (No offence to George Romero). Let me put it this way, I will rather be scared of fast running agile zombie rather than slow moving one. You can always outrun the slow ones but outrunning something who can chase you and not get tired is something which gets on to your nerves. Many George Romero fans find it pathetic but let me tell you it all depends what version you have seen first. This is because whatever you have seen first creates a nostalgia effect hard to beat. I had seen the remake first and after seeing that the original looked very cheesy. Even my young brother wasn't scared of original and he is very easy to scare but when he watched the remake that was a different story altogether. Since everyone has already gone into details therefore I won't be going into technical aspects. All I will say is that it is one of the best zombie movie ever made. Period.
As far as the new zombies movies go this is probably the best. Felt bad for Burt Reynolds and Jay Leno.

a very well made remake that is just as good as the original , but in very different ways, i liked the way the zombies moved in this one, it was different they were very terrifying seeing them run full force at you, as oppossed to the slow moving zombies, if that formula was used again in this one, it wouldnt be as affective as it turned out to be, great stuff...would like to see a direct sequel to the characters from this film.

A remake of my all time favorite horror movie, and well done!
The movie takes the basic plot of the original film and adds it's own twist to it. It doesn't exactly copy the original version scene for scene. If it did, it wouldn't be worth remaking and I hate it when directors basically say "I wanna remake this movie" then reshoot it exactly like it was with different actors. Zack Snyder did very well with this. He took the basic premises of the movie: a group of survivors band together inside a shopping mall while an outbreak of the undead spreads out all over the world. Some people complain about running zombies in this one. I think it adds to the horror. Slow moving zombies were scary as hell back in the 60s and 70s. Survivors only had certain weapons and resources back then to fight back. With current zombie movies taking place in the modern day, we have new and improved weapons and tech. Slow zombies now wouldn't be too scary at all. You could just mow them down with an M60 or stand out in the open and pick them off with a rifle as they creep towards you. What happens, however, when undead, cannibalistic corpses come charging at you at 7-10 miles an hour? Even in a group of people with guns, you're dog meat if you stand around in place.
I give this movie a 10 because it brought back memories of the original Dawn when I watched it as a kid 13 years ago. I can't point out any flaws in this movie. There are none if you ask me. Hell, this one even has a scary ending while the original had a happy ending. I recommend this film to anybody who enjoys a good scare and some nice gore shots inside a good story because Zack Snyder's remake has it all in one big mix.

this remake was a good one but the only things that was the same was the fact of people being stuck in a mall with zombies outside. and them trying to get away. the origanl dawn of the dead was about the people mainly deciding to go ahead and live in the mall and start over. both movies were good in my book. Oh and the fact they made the zombies in the remake run and have more energey was a good add on.
Zombies dont run!! Death is not a energy drink. Other than that little detail, I thought this was a very good film, the casting was spot on, Although you cant really call it a remake with the only real similarities are zombies and a mall. If they didnt call it a remake then they probably would have been sued.Top film
Its just not the same as the original. The plot line was different. Sure I enjoyed it. But it just wasn't the same enjoyment I received from the original. Original is far better. But this one was fairly decent.
"I'm not sure I can recall witnessing an opening sequence quite like the one I saw in Zack Snyder's remake of the classic horror film 'Dawn of the Dead.' Besides being rather lengthy (it's over ten minutes before we see the opening credits), it has a bizarre creepiness about it. There's something about the cinematography employed to show us 'the beginning of the end' that I really liked: that extra long image of the little girl skating away, the skyview of Sarah Polly's car as she rides home from her shift as a nurse, the picture of perfect serenity, and those intimate scenes we see of her and her husband 'the day before.' It all makes it more tragic, when, quite unexpectedly, morning comes, and with it, the end of all that is sane. The pure chaos of the scenario, an outbreak of a dangerous break of a virus that turns those infected into ghouls, comes so suddenly that it grips us by the throat.
This is one hell of a horror movie. Even for someone as jaded as myself, who has become totally jaded to any real horror thrills, I was taken aback by how uncomfortable the movie made me feel. Our heroes, holed up at the now abandoned local mall, join small groups of survivors and find themselves fighting each other as well as the zombies when the plague starts creeping ever close to bringing them all to the brink of annihilation. The zombies have an easy-to-spot weakness: one shot to the head takes them out, but they're extremely fast, and a single bite from them leads to hopeless infection and mindlessness. Although some of the story makes little sense (for instance, if the zombies can only transmit the virus by bite and the heroes are in a mall, couldn't they don the heaviest attire imaginable rather than skimpy t-shirts?), there are lots of great twists and snappy dialogue along with the required creep-outs, gore, and slaughter.
And there's some surprisingly great humor. Easily the most memorable of the light-hearted, break-the-nerves moments is when our heroes are situated atop a roof and challenge a local gun shop owner to take out look-alike zombie celebrities, which he does with ease. It's a much needed laugh to relieve the audience of a lot of built-up jitters.
Overall, this is a remake that actually works. The characters, for all their strength and weaknesses, are decently fleshed out for a horror movie. There a few unexpected surprises that even the most attentive viewer will take pleasure in. And the action moves along at a clean, fast pace. The few holes that exist in the plot and the somewhat unsatisfying conclusion are the only real problem areas, but these are to be expected in the genre. Overall, I definitely recommend it, even to the squeamish. It's messy fun for everyone. And make sure you stay until AFTER the credits roll. You'll be glad you did." --David Drebsky (Paninoguy@aol.com), imdb.com
Ok where do you start , well i remember back in the day being a snot nosed kid and my cousins showing me a pirate copy of dawn of the dead ( original ) and being more than moved , that was the start of my nw hobby . I became obsessed with horror films . So years pass George Romero blessed us with day of the dead and then BANG the re-make trend kicks off , ok the whole should they shouldnt they debate is if your a die hard fan of a film then i suppose you say No but if you have faith in the director and you know he's as much o a fan as you then you could cross your fingers and hope fo the best . BUT even thoe the texas chainsaw re-make was beyond belief and gave you more story line and more info on the Edd Gein inspired family there are some directors who's work should NOT be fucked with .Yes im a big Romero fan but even so what i watched at the cinema was far from a re-make of dawn of the dead , if your gonna pay homage to a film then you produce something like 28 days later which even as a film on its own it has several homage's to dawn of the dead .The re-make of dawn of the dead only draws one that it is set in a shopping mall thats it , yes its a great zombie film and stands up amonge the hundreds of other films but as a re-make i dont think so .Ok the zombies are great the make-up real but maybe it should have bee called someting els .
If you wanna see a top zombie film then yeh wach it but please please dont compair it to Georges work , in closeing , was there realy any need for the zombie babey did we realy need to see that , was that put in just to shock as from what i recall that all people talked about maybe that was the red herring to draw your attetion from it being a re-make.
Am I really the first negative review for this movie on here? That’s pathetic.
It was just stale and uninspired.
The beginning brought my level of hope for this movie up pretty high, and the sleek new zombies were pretty amazing. When the zombie action and scare scenes actually happened, there were simply some of the best I’ve seen on film.
Too bad action and scares only happened for 20% of the movie, and even that might be a little high. The majority of this film was just stale, boring dialogue with some comedy thrown in. I thought the comedy bits were pretty well-done, but they didn’t fit. At all. I think the scariest part of this entire movie is the main menu.
I just can’t give this movie a positive rating because I’ve seen this movie done before a hundred times—but done right. Parts of the movie reminded me of Cloverfeild, which kept the mood and setting without the pointless dialogue. Parts reminded me of the video game Dead Rising, which had complete and total zombie mayhem and massacre, whereas this movie didn’t come close.
I’m not even sure this was worth watching once because it is so dull. I haven’t seen many zombie movies, but after this I’m starting to think video games are the only entertainment form that can do zombies right.
The origia=nal is my favorite horror ever well it's a tie with BEHIND THE MASK but I was not disapointed at all with the remake of DAWN. The first 15 min of this movie is probably the most tense opener for a horror movie ever!!! I love this one and I always will!
Takes the idea in a new direction. Loved this remake. Best yet. Intense, fun, bloody, never leaves you with a bad aftertaste. And this time the zombies aren’t just purple people eaters.
Not as great as the original but still an excellent film. I thought it was scarier than the first. It took the mall scenario and they took it in a different direction. It worked great for them.
Now the original is my favorite movie of all time full stop (and Aliens). So i was so angery when this was remade, in fact i sulked until I watched it. Also when people bitch about remakes I always think about how this was amazing and The Thing.
I think I walked out with the chair under my finger nails. I truely thought it was excellent. I love the story from beginning till the end. The sense of dredd all the way through, the gore was perfect and I love the original cast being sneaked into the movie. It might be a remake, but the only similarity is the zombies and shoppng mall. Not the characters or the plot really. It's original and fresh.
Okay I Here People On Here Saying It Will Scare The Hell Out Of You.No Not Reely But It Would Be Scary if You Were Put In Their Situation. This Film Does Live Up To The Hype.
James Gunn is an amazing director. I am yet to see a movie of his that I am disappointed with. I don't think anyone could have remade Dawn of the Dead better. The movie was intense, bloody, violent and graphic.
In the first kill scene our heroine Sara Polly wakes up to see there 8-year-old nieghbor girl standing in the bedrood door way. Her husband gets up to see if the girl is alright and is bitten by the girl. From this point on it is a non-stop bloody ride of flesh eating zombies.
A small group of people board themselves up in a mall where a few have been bitten and become infected. The few left alive realize they cannot stay there forever and plan a escape.
I'm not going to ruin the ending but I was very pleased.
