There is something about this film that seems like a birthday party. The narrative plays out like someone reciting a spooky at the end of flashlight. You and the rest of your friends giggle excitedly and then scatter through the maelstrom of pre-adolescent shrieks as the teller flashes the bloody stump arm conveniently folded under their t-shirt. What I'm trying to say is that this movie is just good old fashioned fun.
It walks a fine line by being gruesome but never grotesque, funny but never a joke and schlocky but never stupid... something that was sorry overlooked in Tim Sullivan's pathetic sequel(?) 2001 Maniacs (Course I PREFER to lay the blame the ever clueless Eli Roth for that, because it lets me reaffirm everything I already think about him).
Anyway, what I think needs to be said is that modern day directors in the exploitation vein could learn a valuable lesson from Herschell Gordon Lewis. It works because it provides everything a b-movie should without becoming self-deprecatory or obversely pretentious. Admittedly the pacing is a little slower than what we've come to expect from contemporary filmaking but I'd like to think we can all admit that that is a problem with contemporary audiences and not the film itself.
2000 Maniacs is a rare gem and belongs in any respectable horror collection.
