The man in the iron mask was a mysterious Frenchman of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, who was imprisoned for unknown reasons and remained imprisoned until his death in Bastille. While in prison his face was covered with a mask probably made of velvet, but the legend says it was iron. The first reference to his existence was made by philosopher of the Enlightenment Voltaire, through his work The Century of Louis XIV.
