I first saw various scenes from this movie in the music video "And You Will Live In Terror" by the death metal band Necrophagia and i thought to myself, wow this movie looks awesome so i bought this masterpiece.

The film opens in 1927 in New Orleans, where we see a group of local town people traveling by boat to a hotel. Once they reach shore they break into the hotel and torture a warlock named, Schweik. They beat him with chains and crucify him by nailing him into the wall with spikes into his hands. Then they pour some kind of acid on him and watch as he melts into mass of goo. Before Schweik died, he tried to tell the town’s people that the hotel was built on one of the seven gateways to hell and only he could close it.

Many years later (1981) Lisa (Catriona MacColl) has come from New York City to claim her inheritance, the hotel. She plans to remodel and reopen it with the help of the hotel’s long time housekeeper and her son. From the moment Lisa gets there, several unusual things begin to happen; a painter falls from a scaffolding where he was painting the hotel, a plumber is found dead in the basement of the hotel, an architect doing research on the hotel is killed and the housekeeper is impaled

Lisa meets a local doctor, John (the late David Warbeck) and joins up with him to try solve the mystery behind the hotel. She needs to know why everyone close to the hotel has met a horrible end. After “escaping” to a local hospital they find another nightmare waiting for them there, as the dead rise and walk. Lisa learns that the door to hell under the hotel has been reopened and that the world is in great danger unless they can close it.

This is Lucio Fulcis best movie in my opinion, with tons of gore, the famous eyegag scene and much more- go get it now!!

Score: 10 / 10
