There are certain things that I hate about movies in the theater, the crowds, the idiotic audience, but most of all how select some movies can be. As is the case with Below, the new film by Dimension hyped up to be Event Horizon on a ship. Well, though due to very limited release I was able to see the film, and I must say that I was surprised.

"A submarine isn't a good place to keep secrets" During Word War II the United States navy ship, the Tiger Shark patrols the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The ship is known to be cursed, and has a legend that workers were welded inside it's walls. The ship has taken on survivors from a near by British medical ship have come on board as the Tiger Shark prepares for a deeper voyage. Soon enough the ship is stuck on the bottom of the ocean, waiting silently. Slowly the crew grows uneasy and fears that they will die in the secluded areas of the ship. The realms of what is real, where reality strays from fiction, and the psyche of the mind slowly dissolve into the deep of the ocean.

I was intrigued when I read that the film was pretty much Event Horizon on a ship, and I love Event Horizon. So I sought out the film, and when I found it was playing at my local theater I decided I might as well head down there and check it out. By the time I was able to get to the theater that next week it had been taken out. So franticly I found an alternate way of seeing the film, so I searched on imesh. It took me weeks to actually got it up and running, but it finally happened. I sat down and watched it, and to my surprise it wasn't exactly like Event Horizon. I mean sure there was a crew on a "haunted ship", but other than that there are no real connections between the two films.

The thing that attracted me to the film was the story by David Twohy who also brought us Pitch Black, and The Fugitive. I found the idea of a crew on a ship, lost in the bottom of the ocean very interesting. I thought that though the film was no where near as scary as Event Horizon it still had it's moments that made you jump, and feel a little paranoid of what is going on in your own surroundings.

One of the main flaws of the film would be the acting, but not all. The character of Claire (Olivia Williams of Rushmore), her acting at points was either sub par, or over dramatic. It seemed as if she rushed through her lines, and the same can be said for the role of Brice (Bruce Greenwood of Disturbing Behavior) his character really didn't appeal to me, and I felt as if he (like Williams) didn't put enough heart into the role. The character development I also felt was weak in points, but just mainly with these two characters.

All in all I was glad I saw this film, and I was disappointed that it opened at number 11 at the box office, but this is only because (again) to limited release. I think that if they just publicize a movie (any) for a long enough period of time it would be a minor, or huge success.

Score: 6 / 10
