I will state plainly, this is easily one of the worst films I have ever seen. Numerous random scenes sewn into the "plot" in an attempt to be artistic, only served to prove that writers didn't know what they were doing. The film has vague references to the short story "Shadow Over Innsmouth" via the Marshland family, that a couple more name droppings like "Dagon" and "Cthulhu", beyond that, the connections to Lovecraft cease. The ending is without a doubt a complete joke, it cannot even be called a "cliff-hanger", it was simply arbitrary. Simply put, to any true Lovecraft fan out there, DO NOT waste your time on this drivel.

First off, I have no idea what Cthulhu was is or still is. I know from basic web searches on the internet that "it" is a mythical creature that lives in the ocean?!? right??? Whatever though, this film really hooked me and startled my senses a bit. The film is full of dread, death, loss, and in some ways love. It is very dreamlike too. It is refreshing to see horror movies bring in gay characters. As a gay man myself, it is nice to see a character dealing with issues that are relatable. Even if you are not gay, we all have had to deal with who we are within life, love and family. Is the film scary? I think so, the scary thing is you know something bad is happening right from the start of the film, but the filmakers let you fill in the blanks yourself. There are brief glimpses of "monsters" but they are subtle and are never completely understood. The film is strange and the end revelation is interesting.
