I have never been a huge fan of this movie directed by Stanley Kubrick nor of anything based on a Stephen King novel. But after numerous Film classes I have grown to respect this movie highly.

Jack Nicholson plays John Torrence, a man hired to keep up a hotel in Colorado during the winter season. He moves in for six months with his wife Wenny played by Shelly Duvall and his son Danny, played by Danny Lloyd.

There is numerous chats about past inkeepers who where struck with cabin feaver, one inparticular, who murdered his family and then kills himself.

Danny has a gift called the "shining" where he can see the future, read minds, and see dead people (insert joke here). Both parents are worried, but are told its no big deal by a doctor before they leave.

The movie is filled with many eerie moments and twists, that all lead up to an unfullfilling conclusion.

The camera work was fantastic, I specifically love the shots where the camera follows Danny around the house on his like bike from behind him. The lighting was fantastic, it gave the utter feeling of silence and emptiness.

Another great thing about The Shining is the acting, Jack Nicholson gave an unbelievable and thrilling performance. He makes you feel uncomfortable, like hes going to conbust at any moment. Unfortunatly for this movie they casted Shelly Duvall (Olive Oyle) who gives us no reason but to hope for her sudden death. How she made it into the movies is beyond me. Little Danny gives an awsome performance and really gives you chills when he has his "shining" moments, and of course his "redrum" scenes.

The main thing that bothers me with this movie is that it is too short to explain anything, it leaves you wondering what the hell happened to Jack.....Did he go nuts because he was couped up, or was there a ghostly presence messing with him from the begining.

Rent this movie, it is worth seeing, but don't try and understand what is going on, just enjoy the acting and the eerie moments that make this a classic.

Score: 7 / 10
