It was a lot of years ago, way back when Sam Goody stores still existed in Puerto Rico, and i had heard about this movie called "Cube" through the audio commentary of "Resident Evil (2002)". When i finally saw the DVD in the horror section, i figured i'd give it a try. Turns out it was the smartest choice.
The movie starts out with a man waking up in one of the many rooms of the Cube. He gets up and walks around some rooms for a bit until one room that has a trap; as we come to find out; literally dices him up into tiny pieces. This was the scene that was discussed in the RE '02 commentary that was said to be the inspiration for Colin Salmon's laser scene.
Immediately afterwards, we start to meet the protagonists of the movie. Starting off with Quentin the cop who is at first slated to take on the "big, strong hero" who will save them all by the end, Worth who knows more about the Cube than he's letting on, Leaven the math student, Holloway the doctor who believes conspiracy theories, Rennes the prison escapee expert, and Kazan the mentally handicapped young man who later turns out to be quite useful than originally thought.
The ways the characters evolve from how they acted at first, such as the "hero" police officer Quentin going psycho, Worth at first very apathetic but through interactions with Holloway and Leaven, starts to become more cheerful, and Holloway's insistance to bring Kazan along even though most in the group see him as someone who could get them killed if he made a wrong move due to his handicap are all acted out very effectively. And in this movie, math is an instrument which is essential for the group to try to escape the Cube. So i'm sure many math experts love to watch this movie whenever they can to see how much the characters know about the whole math equations and such. Personally, math was never my strongest subject so most of the math being explained in the movie was totally lost on me but if it helped them progress, then it must be REALLY good math.
There are a lot of arguments, particularly among Quentin and Holloway, as well as Quentin and Worth. And just when we think he's gonna be the hero of the movie, as he keeps arguing with them, he starts getting more desperate as well as psychotic. And so the role of "hero" is shifted more towards Worth by the end of the movie. Speaking of which, Quentin and Worth have a very nice final battle at the end of the movie. I don't wanna give away which characters escaped the Cube so as to not spoil it for newcomers, but i can tell you that we never see what is outside the Cube, therefore giving the film an ambiguous ending but one that does feel right.
I'd give the flick a perfect 10/10 due to it's originality at the time and the way it was shot, but the complicated math definately takes it down just a tiny notch for me so all in all, i would give Cube a 9, 9.5 at most. Definately give "Cube" a try, i guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Cube is a film that opens in sheer mystery and keeps you guessing even after the movie is over. The film is extremely claustrophobic and you begin to feel the fear that these characters feel. Each room a new trap and each trap a new difficulty to overcome. The downside to the brilliant concept is the acting is pretty bad at times and most of the characters feel one dimensional. Also, the visuals haven't aged very well.
If you can look past Cube's flaws you will find a very interesting and engaging sci-fi horror picture.
great but really crapppy acting
this movie should be like remade with better actin and work out some knicks in story that didnt make sense but great movie deserves to be watched

Wow what a cool wierd movie this was, shockingly very very original! this film exceeded my expectations very much as there isnt much you can do inside of a cube, but this film shows that you dont always need a a list cast or a 40 million dollar budget to throw around ,s ometimes the best filmaking comes from low budget, improvising and using alot of brains, i think films are always better with low budgets becuase your forced to be more creative with what little is given.

Wow, I like psychological thrillers, movies that mess with the mind. I also like movies with a number sequence pattern. Like this movie entailed both and I really enjoyed it. The acting was a little cheesy but the movie was overall good. I want to see what a remake would be like. Even though remakes often ruin movies I think they could right a better script and have better graphics. This is definatly a movie I would recommend. I give it a 4 1/2 taking away the half for the cheesy acting..

Cube is a psychological/sci-fi horror film from 1998 in which a group of people mysteriously wake up inside a massive cube, which is in turn made up of thousands of smaller 'rooms.' This movie is an instant classic that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but beware the sequels...
A must see. Has it's moments of tension and is overall a very interesting movie. The acting is a little bad, but it can be overlooked since it's such a great film. Good photography. It's a math nightmare.
Good movie with a few gory scenes. This movie makes you think so good luck with that. By the way who made their clothes with their names and why were they picked. Worth renting and maybe you can figure it out and tell me.
I loved this movie! The premise was unique, the acting was good, and the story wasn't at all predictable. You will enjoy this movie, and it has replay value if you want to buy used for about the cost of a rental.
The opening scene reminds me so much of Saw it is hard not to call this Saw’s sci-fi brother. I prefer Saw over this any day, but I prefer this over most movies I’ve seen in my life. My only major complaint was the effects in the end, though I know that couldn’t be avoided with the budget.
I also completely loved the nihilistic “there is no big brother, only man” approach to answering what the cube was all about. Add some of the creepiest music I have ever heard, and you get one amazing movie.
