I make it a point to watch the goriest movies I can find. Movies like The Descent, Saw and Hostel are like Sesame Street to me. I was confident that I had completely desensitized myself to gore movies, but as I watched Inside, I became a quivering mess of anxiety. This is the most frightened I've been from a movie since I was a child. Inside did what other horror movies have failed to do. This movie had the most realistic gore I've ever witnessed on a screen. I think the crewmembers in charge of the special effects witnessed creul bloody murders at some point in their lives. Splendid movie. 10/10 easy.
I haven’t seen such a beautiful horror movie since the original Saw. To top it off, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so much blood on screen at one time in a movie.
While American directors think people are disturbed by scenes they’ve seen a hundred times—M. Night with The Happening, Eli Roth with everything, whoever made 30 Days of Night—I’m just glad someone understand what it means to be disturbing: to show us something we haven’t seen before. The ending was predictable, but still groundbreaking with what it shows on screen, bringing over-the-top new meaning. I remember back in high school when some friends and I would joke about the plot of this movie, and how it would never be made. Now it was. It’s almost like a dream come true.
The acting and the music both make the story atmospheric and beautiful. The surrealism, minimal sci-fi nods, truly disturbing images, and the over-the-top plot devices give it a punk edge that I haven’t seen in an American movie other than in the Saw series. It’s easily my 6th favorite movie of all time, if you count series as one movie. I don’t know how they could have made the movie any better.
BUT DO NOT RENT THIS MOVIE: I rented it and saw it was an edited cut, then went out and bought the unedited cut. The difference is the edited cut takes out major plot points, some disturbing dialogue, and some of the more bloody moments. DO NOT RENT THIS MOVIE OR YOU WILL BE SEEING A WATERED-DOWN VERSION, AND THE UNEDITED VERSION IS FAR SUPERIOR.
It’s also the only movie I’d honestly compare to Saw, though it is not torture porn in any way. It’s hard to name a more perfect movie, if even possible at all—and I hate 90% of movies I see.
Wow. This movie was shockingly good. I really didn't expect much after being disappointed by hype machines like The Signal as of late (those being movies where the community is hyping them beyond what they can truly deliver).
Inside did it for me though. Just a fantastic horror movie.
It loses 2 points for the actions of the cops though. As mentioned by everyone else the actions just didn't match with what any sane person...let alone a cop who would be trained in such situations...would actually do. There were so many better (and easy) ways to have NOT had her escape at that point in the film while still continuing things.
All things considered though...just a wonderful accomplishment of blending suspense with gore without sacrificing either.
Wow...very good movie. I went into it w/ high expectations, and was only disapointed twice...
SPOILERS:
As mentioned below by "ultrazilla200" the absolutely stupid cops and the flame to the face, were low points in the film. The scripted police actions were so obviously stupid and incorrect that it took me out of the movie a bit and actually pissed me off. I remember thinking (about the third cop and his chained prisoner) "what crap, just putting needless stupid characters in the film to up the death count! Grrr!" It works in pure slasher films, and pure gore flicks, but in a movie that splices genres and has been SO GOOD up until this point...it doesn't! I kinda felt betrayed or something. I had to bite my tounge a tiny bit though when he "wakes up" and freaks out because, well, that was very scary and (almost) worth the extra characters...still, could have been done w/ one of the other cops somehow in my opinion.
Secondly, if you have a firey flame on the face for that long, you're gonna have a hard time kicking any more ass, plain and simple. This transgression is forgivable because if I had my face slashed, hand impaled, stomach stabbed, and head beat in with toaster...all while pregnant, I probably wouldn't be up and fighting...but Sarah sure is and it works for the film obviously.
All in all, Inside is a REALLY GOOD movie that is hardcore, unrelenting, beautifully shot, thought out, and scripted. It is original and everyone who likes thrillers and doesn't mind mega violence needs to see this film. It does have some flaws (stupid frekin cops! ARGH!) but a great effort from some first time filmakers!
2 questions...
1) why did she poke a hole in her neck then tape it up? Was it a suicide attempt followed by reconsideration?
2) Why is everyone so psyched about the ending?...if it's the scissors on the stair scene, well, I expected that as soon as I saw the cover! Seemed obvious, not groundbreaking.
Could you ask for a better horror movie?
Its got thrills, chills, and plenty of gore. The film gets away with very intense violence, but not to the point where it becomes senseless. With a perfect ending this film is possibly the best horror film of 2007
Ignore the haters on this one. Inside is one of the greatest horror movies ever. From the extreme violence to the fantastic atmosphere, everything about this movie is almost perfect.
This movie is ridiculous, but don't take my word for it see it with your own eyes.
So much blood, so much carnage, so many shocking death scenes. I can't even really put this movie into words, all I can do is encourage you to watch it because I promise you have never seen anything like it.
perfectly awesome
The french have done it again, they are really showing us how horror should be done right and proper. From the time the carnage started to the end I could not take my eyes off the screen, I anticipated wondering how would the next victim get killed in some gruesome way. Inside is and will be one of the best horror films of 2008 period!!
Masterpiece. That's all I can say about this movie. Absolute masterpiece. This is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen in my life and the villain of the "The Woman," ingeniously played by Beatrice Dalle, is one of the best portrayals of a monster I've ever seen. She took a nothing part and added so many nuances and depth to the role. She made it a fully 3-dimensional character. Alysson Paradis should get recognition as well. She really went through hell and reached so many emotion levels. BRAVO to these two women.
The movie has its fair share of gore and the sweet red stuff as well. TONS! But it is used to enhance the movie, it's not just gore for the sake of gore. The movie is smart as well.
I can't stop raving about this movie. It was my number one movie of 2007 and is now one of my favorite movies of all time.
Do I have anything bad to say about this movie? Actually no. I don't have one negative.
Go out and see this movie. I demand you too!
If your tired of the tired, used up, and puked out assembly line horror movies we have today, then see this movie. It is the real deal. Trust me, you'll thank me for this later on.
HOLY SH-T!!! this is the greatest horror movie I've ever seen! the story of a pregnant women who has recently lost her husband being stalked and then brutally attacked by a mysterious women. as soon as this women starts her attack, the gore, the terror, and the suspense do not end until the credits role and by then you'll cheer and want to take a shower. this one's ending will haunt you weeks after you see it.
the perfect French horror movie!!
Loved it...although I don't believe I'll be wanting to watch it again any time soon. As a girl with an adoration for motherhood I had a REALLY hard time watching this movie, but my love for French horror made it impossible for me to look away. I'll also add that Inside is a picture perfect example of what it means to "push it" in a horror movie.
Regardless of the completely ruthless brutality that this movie is overflowing with, there are so many noteworthy traits to be accounted for. The score and the cinematography had A LOT to do with the overall effectiveness of the film. There wasn't really any music used, it was more about the quiet, eerie sound effects. I also thought it was great how the majority of the movie took place on one main location, sort of contributing to the whole claustraphobic feeling.
Though I enjoyed Inside for the most part, I feel it certainly didn't live up to the hype people are giving it. The first half of the movie was excellent, but as soon as the police arrive the second time, everything starts to spiral downwards.
Never have I seen more stupid police characters! Are French police really this dumb, or is the movie's writing just this bad? A police officer would NEVER tie an arrested man to himself, and drag him into a dangerous situation. EVER! That was the lamest thing I've ever seen on film! He would have stayed outside and radio'd for back up, period. Oh but it gets worse...once they are inside the house and see all the carnage, AND locate Sara...do they rush her out of the house to the car and radio for help? No. The idiot tells her to stay put while he and his man in custody go looking for the power box FIRST, to get the lights back on BEFORE radioing for help. WTF?!? Not to mention he has now given his arrested perpetrator a gun to help defend himself. Wow...
All I can say is this complete lack of realism took me out of the story and all tension was lost.
Now lets fast forward a few minutes, to the actually cool scene of Sara using the aerosol can as a flame thrower while crazy bitch lights up her cigarette. Am I the only one who saw her take that flame blast STRAIGHT IN THE FACE for about three to four seconds? Am I the only one who saw how it was charring and melting the skin? AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO REALIZES THE WOMAN WOULD BE VERY BLIND AFTER SUCH AN ATTACK?!? But no, she is fully capable of continuing her attacks, and even performing a nasty C-Section...all mere moments after having her face torched off.
Inside started off wonderfully, but eventually led down the same path of stupidity that most horror movies take by completely throwing realism out the window. How disappointing.
Inside, the newest French horror film to gain genre fan buzz, is a brutal, unrelenting, horrific, little monster that dares the viewer not to look away. Indeed, this is a difficult film to watch. Packed to the brim with excellent acting, cinematography, effects, and excessive violence, Inside is one of the most disturbing, yet effective films I've seen to date. With that said, I'm not sure I ever want to see it again.
At the outset of the film, Sarah (Alysson Paradis) gets in a wreck with another vehicle and loses her husband. Thankfully, she and her unborn child survive. Four months later, on Christmas Eve, she is preparing for the arrival of her child, bitter and depressed by the loneliness of the holiday. But a strange woman (Beatrice Dalle, who will from here on out be known as "the woman") comes knocking at her door and knows everything about her. For some reason, she wants her child and she'll murder anybody that stands in her path.
It's hard to deny how great this film looks. By all standards, Inside is very well made. The look of the film is dark and cold with shadows looming over the characters, the acting and directing are top notch, and the effects look incredibly realistic. But even with the excellence that surrounds the production of the movie, it's hard to sit there and justify watching it as a human being. I love my blood and guts just as much as the next guy. However, the best movies with excessive violence, like Dead Alive and Undead, are usually cheesy B-movies that are more laughable than unsettling. But Inside is graphically realistic to a fault. The violence is grisly, disgusting, and overbearing to the point where even I, who can usually handle most anything, wanted to look away. It's a depressing piece of work that only the most tainted of souls will like for the violence.
But strip away all that excessive violence and you still have a well made, thrilling, and effective piece of work. When the woman appears for the first time to begin her reign of terror on poor Sarah, the film displays traces of influence from John Carpenter's classic Halloween. Just as Michael in that masterpiece, you can sense the woman's presence even in the shots she is not visible in. You just know that she's always close by waiting for the right time to strike. Every shot she isn't in near the beginning of this film just drips with suspense, tension, and a sense of knowing she is there watching Sarah. One part in particular is absolutely terrifying in the way the woman slowly steps out of the shadows behind Sarah, watches her, then slowly disappears. Unfortunately, the film wanders off course and the suspense present in these early parts of the film fades away.
Anybody who is knowledgable in the subject of film can tell you that the best monsters stay hidden throughout most of the film. For example, films like Jaws, Halloween, and Alien rarely showed their beasts, which made it much more effective when they did appear. Although the woman stays hidden near the beginning of her onslaught, when she comes out to attack, she stays out for good. So the suspense and tension that is felt at the beginning of the film practically vanishes faster than you can calm your beating heart down from the previous shot. It basically becomes an exercise in mutilating the human body in terrible ways. Disgusting? Definitely. But suspenseful and tension filled? Not so much. Subtlety is always scarier in horror films and this movie is anything but subtle.
Even so, it's hard not to recommend Inside because, despite the grotesque imagery and graphic violence, it's very well made and quite effective. The film certainly isn't for everybody, but if you can stomach the putrid exploitation of violence, you'll find one hell of a roller coaster ride in Inside.
I have to say that I was slightly disappointed by this movie. I was expecting something AMAZING, and got something mediocre. The storyline isn't that great..it's really predictable, doesn't offer any real character development, and is just really kinda eh. The characters aren't really that great either. I already figured out who the "bad" woman was right away, and her motivation isn't that impressive. The main character, Sarah, doesn't inspire much sympathy either...frankly, she's a real b*tch, and a stupid one at that.
The only high points to this movie is the atmosphere, the decent acting, and the fantastic gore. Blood and guts everywhere. I've noticed that many people seem to be torn over whether or not this is a gore movie or a movie with a great storyline, and i tend to side with the gore...really, that's all there is.
Granted, the ending is good...nice and bloody, but like the rest of the movie, fairly predictable.
Overall, it's an alright movie, but it definately didn't blow me away. If you want to see REAL intense tension, watch the French film "THEM"...that's real tension.
I read most of these comments, and even read that nice blog by Vardulon that was posted here, and even though I completely agree with Vardulon's criticisms of the very stupid decisions made by the characters in the movie - I still love this movie. It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat, and the stupid actions of the characters got me even more involved ("why the fuck are you going to do that... no... don't... noooooooo").
I've seen mindless gore movies - this is definitely NOT one of them. Good story, character development was sufficient enough to get the story moving, especially that of Sarah's.
The ending was astounding - it was so hard to keep my eyes on the screen, but i managed to do so and I did not regret it.
Look, I hate movies that are nothing but blood and guts and pointless violence. I LOVE this movie, so for those who are still wondering whether they should go watch this movie, WATCH IT! What's the worse that you wasted if you didn't end up liking it?
This movie is certainly NOT mindless gore. It is a perfectly structured piece of extreme tension. I cannot put into words how visceral and unnerving this film is. Surely i'm not saying anything everyone else hasn't already, but I need to add some kind words (since it seems some people don't know how to rate the movies in skulls as they review them, eg: "i loved it. wow. 1/10") Comon guys, you're draggin down the overall user rating.
This movie has the most shocking 'holy shit' moments of any film in recent memory. It IS NOT all hype. After looking for this film for almost a year and hearing everyone and their dog raving about it, it almost felt like I'd already seen it. Not true. This film has the power to blow well past your expectations and still make you go 'OH! SHIT!'.
Besides how intense it is, it's also very well shot. Once in the the house, everything has kind of a confined haze over it, a lot of warm colours, enhanced by blood covering almost every surface of the house by the end of the film.
Anyways, i've said enough. it will not disappoint. DO NOT RENT FROM BLOCKBUSTER, they are renting a censored R-Rated version. Booerns to that shit.
I agree with the blog post that somebody else linked to. This movie was gory, but that's all it had going for it. The characters were all two-dimensional and every one of them made retarded mistakes every chance they could.
This movie is NOT brilliant. I have nothing against mindless gore movies. However this movie tries to have it both ways. I can ignore stupid characters that do things that make no sense if the movie is supposed to be a fun time. This movie is supposed to be serious though. Serious and stupid don't mix well in a horror movie. I didn't care about any of the characters. I didn't feel bad when any of them died. I didn't root for anybody who was doing the killing. There's no suspense and it's not scary.
Gore and shock for it's own sake is fine in a Troma movie, but not in one that wants to be taken seriously.
Holy crap. This movie... wow. I loved it. It was done so well and I cared so much about Sarah. I did have a few questions (whether I missed something or not), but I wont bring them up here because it would ruin it for those who have not yet seen it. The ending was horrible and hard to watch, yet so realistic you have to respect it. All in all, I guess I actually love the ending, but let me say, I have never flinched like that in any other movie I have seen (those who have seen it will, again, know what I'm talking about). Trust me, this is one for the collection.
"Inside" is a little like "The Terror of Tiny Town"... except, instead of all the characters being "little people", they're all retarded. The film just piles one dumb move on top of another until the whole thing is a laughable mess and you couldn't care less what happens next. (It's kind of hard to invest yourself emotionally in a character when you're hysterically mocking her abject stupidity.) There isn't a single moment of tension, not one genuine scare, in the entire movie. Once it gets going, it's just an over-the-top bloodbath along the lines of King Arthur cutting up the Black Knight in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". I guess if I was 12 or 13, I might have enjoyed the gore... but I'm not 12 or 13. Then there's the ending... which contains, IMO, the most breathtakingly stupid "twist" in movie history. (A "twist" which, if you have just 8 or 9 functioning brain cells, you will have seen coming the entire movie.) "Inside" definitely goes on my list of movies I wish I could "unsee". Laughable.

I really enjoyed this movie. It has great atmosphere and was shot extremely well. I was not shocked by this movie in the least. Maybe because I read too many reviews but this movie was not that gory people. Sure a ton of blood but not gore. The only problem I had with this flick was the unbeliveably bad decisions the characters make in this movie. Don't get me wrong the main characters are very well constructed, but OMG you have to suspend disbelief way too many times. I don't wanna ruin the movie with all the dumb dumb moves they do but wow these have to be the dumbest ppl in the world. Aside all that I still REALLY enjoyed this film and would recommend it.
Wow is not enough to describe this movie.
This movie has tons of blood, mayhem, craziness and its extremely brutal.
I try not to give movies a 10/10 rating unless it completely shocks and disturbs me.Will this movie did that and then some.
The only thing i didn't like about this was the English dub over voices, but thats not a big problem at all because the film comes in its original language with English subtitles as well.I prefer to hear the original language than the voice overs.
Is this better than High Tension?
Hmmm, well the ending certainly is,but imo Inside is a totally different experience than High Tension.I would say its better, but if High Tension had a better ending, then these 2 films would probably be equal. One thing though, inside has way more blood.
wow..i am in ahh..this was one of the best horror movie's i have ever seen, brutal, gore infested, thrill ride, and for a change it scared the hell out of me..one i will be showing my friends.
(contains spoilers)
If you want to cringe and flinch.. if you want chills slowly creeping down your spine.. and if you want to say "WOW, THAT IS F*CKED UP !".. this movie is for you.
Inside (À l'intérieur) is definitely one of the best horror movies to ever grace the screen, a classic. It is so beautifully written and so brutally violent, any fan of horror will love it.
Not only does it show unrelenting gore(for example, sharp scissors piercing through the back of a kneecap), but it also has a great plot. The story is very simple and there's no beating around the bush, the only question that should come up is 'who the hell is this crazy random b*tch killing everyone?!' She is introduced in the beginning in one of the creepiest ways ever, coming to the protagonist's door calling her name and knowing all about her history. At the end, you find out who this mysterious woman is in a 45 - second flashback. Personally, i hate twists that take up most of the ending to unravel but the end gets straight to the point.
What i loved most about this French film is the mixed emotions you get throughout the entire film. First you will HATE the woman terrorizing the household but at the end, it makes you sympathize for her. If a movie can make you feel sorry for the killer, its one hell of a film !
Also, the camera work and music is amazingly suspenseful. Every other shot where it's focusing on the characters has the madwoman right behind them, appearing out of nowhere then disappearing into the shadows, which is very VERY creepy.(considering the woman has on a very ominous and sinister dress - like outfit that drags across the floor) Even when they think she's gone..she's f*ckin right there !
And the movie has eerie noises and screeches that sound off everytime there is a brutal, climatic moment.(it gives off a HAUTE TENSION and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE vibe)
The mysterious lady has that kind of devious face that you just wanna punch. But the lady(played by Beatrice Dalle) can easily go down as one of the most insane killers in horror cinema. She will grab just about anything to hurt you(ex. knitting sticks, and even a f*cking toaster) At one point, the woman is able to get a gun and manages to cap a couple characters, which makes you go "AWH NO!!" The pain and anguish she shows isn't fully understandable until the end but she is a great character, giving off intense emotions.
The only bad thing about the film (that doesn't really affect the film entirely cuz most movies do this) is how she is able to fend off and kill every cop or friend that is trying to help the protagonist. It seems like everything has to go her way and that she knows just when the characters are at their weakest and most vulnerable point, to ultimately f*ck their sh*t up. But she IS human and doesn't have super normal strength (Jason and Michael for example). At times she even hurts herself trying to accomplish her goal, which is very realistic.
Overall, this movie scared the crap out of me and has some brutal scenes that will scar you forever. It's safe to say that this movie is a damn near PERFECT horror movie.
