I enjoyed Carved slightly more than the reviewer, but I agree it was pretty mediocre overall.
I personally thought the director did a fairly good job with creating atmoshpere and the film moved at a fairly brisk pace for J-horror, but the story was a mess and got less interesting as it progressed. A lot of critical details seemed to be thrown together haphazardly. Furthermore, the villain started off creepy, but her appearances quickly grew repetitive and predictable and all her mystique was lost.
The movie had a lot of potential, but it was mostly wasted. If you want to see a MUCH better film from this director check out Noroi: The Curse. There is no US version of the dvd yet though, unfortunately. However, if you have an all region DVD player I'd suggest picking up the HK release. It's quite good!
