It was an okay movie but I thought tyhat it was a bit dull since John wasn't in this one.

Posted By: maynardmorrissey at 7:44am, June 18, 2009

better than Part 4, nevertheless the next disappointing sequel. They should stop the Saw-franchise now.

Posted By: Rampage14 at 12:13am, June 18, 2009

The SAW films are movies you have to watch at least twice to get the jist of it, however I was so pissed w/ how Saw 5 came across I won't even bother to sit through it a second time. Saw 4 was bearable, Saw 5 was crap! Up until now each Saw film always had a new different ending. But for Hoffman to be the sole survivor in back to back 4 & 5 annoys me. The way "4" ended you would've thought Jigsaw's test for Hoffman would've been revealed in "5"; which is what I hoped for. There was way too much backstory in part 5 for my taste, trying to show the signifigance of Hoffman w/ Jigsaw. Too much fluff! I rathered Amanda as Jigsaw's sidekick. Bottomline Saw 5 left a very bad taste in my mouth! Saw 6 has alot of damage control to do & increased skeptics to please as a result. Saw 6 need to wrap thing up quickly. For there to be 3 more possible sequels after part 6, the franchise is crossing the line into 'Crystal Lake' POINTLESS sequel territory!!!

Posted By: Dr.Scalpel at 11:05pm, June 17, 2009

Not the best, but not the worst either. The plot seems thin, and advances pretty much to nothing, i was hoping this was just a prelude to number six which was suppose to be the last one and it would tie everything up once and for all so i forgave this movie for it's downfalls when i first saw it. But now that i know they are doing at least two more after part six i changed my mind and think this movie could of done a lot better, they could of had a better twist than the non twist ending plus they could of tied up some more things, but it looks like it aint happening.

Posted By: gp1v07 at 8:16pm, June 17, 2009

I was interested in how the plot could develop in this film, however it was believable ....just about. Jigsaw's death in Saw III mean with Amanda's mean that another person has to set the traps which although its realistic, perhaps ruins what made saw truly brilliant.

It manages to competently tie together the plot, but the storyline's from the previous films mean that the overall franchise story is getting over-complicated and confusing. Its also getting mo
re and more unrealistic. As Saw is having to of pre-meditated even more traps and networks. It takes away the chilling aura of reality which the previous films had.

Practical problems consist of a poor flow in the film, which as the official view said was due to the lack of material to fill the time with. In many ways a sign that this franchise should of already finished. Its also very hard to recognise between the two characters, which was crucial to the film's understanding.

Although the story is getting tired, over-complicated and in some ways desperately unrealistic. I will still be watching the next films in the franchise, simply because Saw V despite it's flaws managed to provide us with a plentiful amount of chilling traps and challenges, each as gory and well-thought out as the first film.

In other words, Saw V and the rest of the Franchise, is and will be worth watching because of gore and the 'games' rather than the plot and storyline.

This is were I isolate myself: I actually thought this was better than 2, 3 and 4.

It has a great story that really ties together events from previous entries. Plus, the dude from Gilmore Girls makes a way more interesting and likeable main character than most other protagonists of the series.

The twist was nothing too spectacular, but achieves it's goal. Also, the final trap as to be one of the most brutal things in the whole damn franchise (so far), and we had to watch it for so long! Makes me fear papercuts in between my fingers.

Posted By: mill biller at 3:51pm, June 2, 2009

well, it was a lot better than 4, but again we have seen this all before. i can't believe they're still gonna make 2 more of these, they should've ended it at 3.

Posted By: VeryEvilDead at 10:33am, May 27, 2009

OK. Worth watching if you like the franchise.

Posted By: ninbatmanmajinjigsaw at 11:55pm, May 26, 2009

wow most people didnt like this movie
anyway i thought this movie was needed and was a setup for saw 6
it was a good movie i loved it as a matter of fact i own it on dvd and iam proud of it
i love all the saw movies and this one wasnt the best but its still saw and i love what ever saw comes my way

Posted By: gorefan43 at 9:58am, May 23, 2009

yeah, it was not the best out of the series, but it was not bad

Posted By: xln10 at 1:03am, May 23, 2009

worst of the series so far

Posted By: MovieGeek at 3:26pm, May 10, 2009

My least favorite of the series but I still liked it. The B Plot could've been better but I loved the traps and the ending was pretty cool.

Posted By: PrimeTimeSlasher at 3:11pm, May 6, 2009

The beginning was great, the ending was great, the story behind jigsaw and hoffman was very well done, rest of the movie wasn't too enticing, the traps were no where near as good as the previous 4 films (except for the pendulum, that was a classic), and the acting of the 5 people in the main trap was just beyond annoying and bad. This was good but not as good as the previous 4.

Posted By: SLIPLORD666 at 9:17am, May 4, 2009

WOW! THAT WAS F***ING AWESOME!! They were right! I couldn't believe how it ended! Fav trap? The Pendulum trap.

Posted By: Googopqp at 7:33pm, April 25, 2009

The Saw series is dying breed, resorting to kills and nothing with the story or characters (whic h they just bring back in from previous films). I am not a big fan of the Saw movies, I thought the first was good and the rest were just meh, I believe they are an overrated hunk of crap that just keeps coming out and making money.

But this one, Saw 5, was just such a terrible movie in general, it is not even funny how bad it was. Not only does the characters going through the traps have almost nothing to do with the actual story and seem to be added in to kill some people, but there is no real twist ending at the end of this movie. The end of this movie was terrible, and the gore in this movie was bad and scarce, compared to Saw 4 which was the goriest of the series then moving down a step for Saw 5.

The characters in this movie are dumb as hell, like the movie, and they add in Jigsaw just to have him in the movie. Everything about this movie sucked, except for the opening scene which was pretty f***ing awesome, but 2minutes does not make a good movie, and this is by no possible f***ing means any good. I am now not looking forward to even considering seeing Saw 6 which is going to be directed by the same person.

Most definetly a low 2/10, which to me is just giving it too much, it doesn't deserve the 2 but the movie;s opening scene was kick ass, but still too short of gore, all movies are nowadays are cut aways and IT SUCKS, like the movie. 2/10

Posted By: cjr83 at 2:52am, April 22, 2009

worst so far

Posted By: Anal Yogurt at 4:27am, April 15, 2009

I enjoyed it very much as a die hard SAW fan. I don't think they'll ever top the 1st one, 2nd one kinda let me down, same with the 3rd. I loved the 4th one and the 5th one is up there with the 4th one. Can't wait for the 6th! haha

Posted By: tukungamer at 3:56am, April 15, 2009

1 out of 5.
First of all i am not a die hard fan of saw franchise & moreover i haven't watched any of the 4 SAW movies. But, I consider myself as a true critic of a movie and SAW 5 directed by Mr David Hackle is not up to the mark. The foremost need of a movie is "plot" where is it? The first scene, the head cage scene, the hand cut scene and the last scene was gory no doubt, but zero suspense building. I'as trying real hard to build suspense but eventually it falls to the ground and smashes right after every scene. I will say to pull back SAW VI immediately, one film cannot stand on cutting and chopping charecters good script are also necessary....!

Posted By: Steanu at 1:44am, April 12, 2009

I am not really a fan, they should have stopped at 3 in my opinion. This is getting ridiculous!

Posted By: Sammi at 6:30pm, April 11, 2009

Saw 4 upset me so bad, I was actually kinda scared to see this one. But I wasn' disappointed. I enjoyed this one. Each gory scene had me cringing every second, not just a jump. The box full of water, the hand-web cutting, the FINAL scene was so intense. I loved it. So glad they came back after failing Saw 4.

Posted By: vampyreman87 at 3:04pm, April 2, 2009

i think its hilarious that the other saws were given 4 and 5 skulls and this one was given 1 and a half, like this one wasnt the same exact stupid garbage as the rest. its settled you must be a blithering idiot if you thought these were good movies. oh by the way why cant i give something half a skull or no skulls, ttrust me if i could i fuckin would

Posted By: bloodnguts313 at 10:34am, April 1, 2009

Wasnt my favorite but it did have some twists that kept me goin. GOOD JOB!:)

Posted By: Knife2urDome86 at 9:56pm, March 31, 2009

This is where I will stop watching the Saw flicks. Saw 4 was pretty bad, this one somehow was worse. No plot, just random deaths with traps that weren't even creative.

Posted By: Jason4eva at 8:05pm, March 31, 2009

After the disappointment of four I loved it! I like them all except four.I thought it felt like Saw again which with Jigsaw dead is weird but you still see him a lot.Missed Amanda though.Reminded me a lot of two but better.
for me three is the best then one then five then two then the sucky forth!

Posted By: goooore at 7:42pm, March 31, 2009

3/10 for gore alone

You can watch the first 15 minutes of it and know exactly what the ending is going to be.

Posted By: horrorking95 at 7:37am, March 14, 2009

One of the best saws! It's gory and adds more to the story! The endings great and the traps are as good as theyve always been

one of the problems with it is that there is not enought people from the saw movies in it. and i didnt really care about the 5. but i still enjoyed it

Posted By: randomrick at 5:49pm, March 9, 2009

wow another saw movie...who knew? if you liked the last one this one is basicaly the same

Posted By: TwistedJigkiller at 2:03pm, March 5, 2009

THE FIRST FILM WAS ON A LOW CLEVER TWISTED MADMANS GAME.
SAW II HAD A GREAT CLEVER TWISTED ENDING
SAW III SEEMED LIKE IT WAS ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER. SAW IV DID GET BETTER THEN ON SAW V IT SEEMED CLEVER BUT ITS NOT IT ONLY IS FUN TO WATCH FOR A FEW DAYS THEN YOU WANT TO PUT IT AWAY BUT ITS OUR FAULT FOR BUYING INTO IT FOR 5 YEARS IN A ROW SO I'D SAY SAW V IS WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT FROM 3 WRITTERS WHO SHOULD HAVE STOPED AFTER SAW IV WHITCH WAS THERE FIRST SAW V WAS NOT TWISTED AT ALL IT FELT LIKE A STRAIGHT TO DVD FILM BUT IN THIS ENDING OF THE 5TH INSTALLMENT OF THE SAW SERIES GETS MORE GORE MORE SHAME AND A LESS OF A GROSS.
I RATE THE FILM
5/20
FOR GORE, TWIST, CAST NO GOOD DIRECTING.

Posted By: katiebo at 12:34pm, February 25, 2009

i was surprised at this movie, i was expecting it to be a lot worst to be honest. This was the first one that i didnt get to see in the cinema, although I have to admit I enjoyed the movie. I loved the opening scene and also enjoyed the twist at the end. I think it was much better than some of the other sequels. Altough I dont think they should keep making to many more otherwise the originality and shock factor will start to fade.

Posted By: The Brazen Bull at 9:47am, February 25, 2009

This movie was not very good and unfortunately it looks as if the Saw franchise is reaching at straws to just cram more films into the relatively short timeline of Jigsaw's life. The kills might have been somewhat over the top, but for the most part were somehow disappointing. I suppose that it is possible to salvage the franchise with part VI, but another disaster like this one, I think it has gone past its shelf life, but every film series gets a pass after some really outstanding films.

Posted By: AChris1990 at 3:36am, February 22, 2009

All the saw movies are just crazy, i think what is best about all of them is after every one, the time period gets crazy the 5th one should stuff in the first movie, i was amazed!

Posted By: billbeast at 8:46pm, February 20, 2009

Wow. With all the crap reviews this sequel is getting i wasn't expecting anything special, but when the movie finished i wanbted more. The whole movie was so well constructed to make us think, and the plot was really confusing at first, but once you figured out the key point, you want more and more. Die hard fans will be pleased as it shows Hoffman as the real prick he is, although what happened in his past i guess isn't really his fault. The switches between Hoffman and Strahm's situation to the five strangers in the Saw 2-like scene really put the pressure on your brain. The strangers scenes were like time to think about what just happened with Hoffman and Strahm.

The plot, well can you say complex. It starts at the end of Saw 3, and the added dialogue about the other officers was pleasing to watch. Remember agent Perez who gto shot in the face in #4, well she died and it's her last words that make Strahm suspicious about Hoffman. The ending was just like any other saw movie, the whole feeling of "I wanna know what happens next". I really don't understand why others gave negative reviews, as this was great.

The acting was believable, and very realistic. What more is there to say.

Overall, this sequel is probablt the 3rd best in the franchise, and is a must for any solid Saw follower. All hail #6. My rating is 3.5/5

Posted By: gorypass at 2:57pm, February 20, 2009

I still like it and seen all of them.....Hey if Jason voirhees can come back why not this one?....I waiting for saw 6 to come.

Posted By: gtimm13 at 9:23pm, February 18, 2009

im a big saw fan, and this movie seemed to fit into place just right. There were a few things that really bug me though: 1 The acting Horrible! Especially the part were Jill is crying from the tape john gave her, god it was just awful. 2 The ending twist, WTF! Isn't that the best part of every saw movie? The big twist in the end that makes you watch it 30 times to understand it!!!! 3 Straum, was it just me or was straum just saying the plot out loud like the plot was to hard to understand which it wasn't big surprise for a saw film. This one just didn't have all the complicated stuff.
This saw movie to me really didn't seem like a saw movie like besides from the traps (like 2) it was just a regular horror film.
Lastly was it just me or were the the 3 girls and 2 guys just really annoying? They just really botherd me with their terrible acting and irrelevance to the movie.
But no matter how many bad things i have to say about the fifth instalment of saw it still gets 6/10 for me because i really did like the ending even though it wasnt a true saw ending.

CANT WAIT FOR SAW 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OCTOBER 23!

Posted By: stewietantrum at 11:48am, February 8, 2009

This is the biggest disappointment of the entire series so far. It does absolutely nothing to further the plot and offers little-to-no important insight into the story. In the context of the series, Saw 5 might as well have not happened at all.

Posted By: dabulk2 at 8:24pm, February 2, 2009

Saw 5 certainly surpasses Saw 4. A good story line with good twists. Comparing this with the other Saw films, it isn't the best, but it certainly meets up to Saw expectations. I enjoyed all the traps and enjoyed the ending though I knew what to expect. Highly recommended film!

Posted By: Murdock408 at 8:19pm, February 2, 2009

saw 5 didn't do much for me. It was good but didn't wow me. The twist was ok but not as gripping as the other but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Posted By: leatherfacekillserinfan1 at 8:19pm, February 2, 2009

I was so excited 2 see this movie b/c this was actually my first saw movie in theatres and i was not dissapointed. This one to me has been the best saw movie since 2! don't get me wrong i love every saw movie and always will but this one was so good to me. I loved all the actors expecially Meagan Good and i was she would actually be a star in a horror movie soon she has died in every single one she's been in(One missed call, saw V, The unborn). I loved the the story of the survivors and was satisfied with the ending although it wasnt as shocking as with the other movies.... but besides that this movie was great!! can't wait for 6!!!

Posted By: CaptainHowdy705 at 9:52am, January 30, 2009

There is one BIG problem with a lot of the reviews for this movie.
Most people don't want to see Saw anymore. That's all there is to it. For the first two or three everyone was still interested. Now, people are handing in their $9 to see this movie while still bitching the whole way. "Blah, blah, blah, I can't believe I'm actually going to sit through Saw V, blah, blah."
Now, don't get me wrong the movie wasn't great. Probably the worst of them all, but by no means was it hard for me to sit through.
Bottom line is this: Read reviews of the people who actually wanted to see this movie. Not the people who forced themselves to go. I wanted to see this movie. And, while I wasn't impressed, I also was not disappointed. For those of you who are skeptical, rent it. I'll probably end up buying it because it stuck to the general Saw purpose: torture-violence, traps, and a reveal (pretty weak in this one, though).

I thought i wouldn't like it but i enjoyed watching this new opus....

Posted By: bloodlust89 at 2:14am, January 28, 2009

I have read many negative reviews for this film, and I completely understand them. Having said that, I enjoyed Saw V very much. I liked how it cleaned up the background story of Jigsaw's apprentice, Hoffman (who turned in a solid acting performance by the way). After seeing the development in Hoffman's character, it seems apparent that the writers are trying to return to the roots of this story. Hoffman gives his victims a chance to survive, while Amanda tended to place her victims in inescapable circumstances.
Most of the traps were run-of-the mill, aside from the pendulum blade, which I will admit is my favorite of all time.
All in all, another solid film, but one that really could have served as Saw 4.5, a movie just to set up for the next installment. I am still looking forward to Saw 6. 5/10

Posted By: zog71 at 12:21am, January 26, 2009

Alright. I bought Saw V because I have the other four. Despite that I find the franchise diving after the first film I continue to watch these movies because I do like the story that they keep unfolding. My problem is that the makers need to wrap this up before it gets too out of hand and everyone loses track at what they are trying to tell.
This installment was not too bad. I thought that the writers were trying to get the story out rather than go with all the killing to appease the masses, and for that I thought that this was not a bad film. Don't get me wrong, the first film is far superior than any of the sequels, but I thought that this installment was true to the first film than the rest. My opinion.
I just hope that everyone involved in this franchise can see that things need to get resolved before this franchise turns on itself like most other horror franchises over the years.

Posted By: Lyssa284225 at 8:28pm, January 25, 2009

It was great just abit confusing

Posted By: Mr.ShotgunFlesh979 at 5:49pm, January 25, 2009

everybody has their own opinions. but seriously, this movie made it so much clearer to me once it explained the history of jigsaw and his apprentices activities. you didnt like it? thats perfectly fine. but hey, the franchise isnt just about gore and torture, {even though it makes the films very appealing and enjoyable}, its about the psychological suspense, like the first one, {which many other people have said}. think about it. the first one. sure it had gore, but did you actually see any of the intense death scenes in it? what about when hep got beaten, or when gordon was sawing off his foot? thats one example. saw 5 had scenes of intense gore, but it was backed up by a clever story and loyal tribute to the franchise. so all in all, i really liked it.

Posted By: MrVoorhees at 4:24pm, January 25, 2009

Something was missing.. i do not know what it is but, something was definitely missing. i guess it was ok.

Posted By: Cenobite31 at 4:09pm, January 25, 2009

From someone that loves this franchise, this movie sucked. From the over the top, unconvincing performances of the cast, to the dumbed down script filled with completely unsympathetic characters, to the uncreative, boring traps (with the exception of the pendulum blade), this movie failed to live up to any of its predecessors. I say this as someone who has been on board with this franchise from day one. Noone wanted to love this movie more than me. The worst part of the film is the fact that I felt no reason to care about the victims trapped together in the game. All we get is some story that vaguely connects them all but even that never gets fully developed. Their deaths become nothing more than mindless bloodshed to appease the gore-hounds. The one shining spot in this movie comes from the performance of Costas Mandylor as agent Hoffman. His performance is delightfully understated in a way that makes Hoffman a worthy replacement for Jigsaw. And for those of you whining about not finding out what was in the black box at the end, that was the point. It sets up for Saw VI. Without that, there's no way to build hype for the next one. I hope Saw VI is way better than this pile of garbage. I'll see it on opening night as I've done with all of these movies, but I won't be nearly as excited as I was for the others because my this movie lowered the bar and my expectations considerably.

Posted By: J0hnnyD3pp<3 at 2:43pm, January 25, 2009

I love Saw. 3rd one's my fav. I only watched 4 and 5 because... i just had to. I was definitely dissapointed with #5. 4 was ok. But I hope Saw 6, they just kill of Strahm or something. End it. No more, its not even worth it.

Posted By: halloweenfan at 8:41am, January 25, 2009

I loved the saw movies as soon as I saw the first. The ending was great and came from a part of underthought horror history. Since then 5 years have passed with 5 movies. Saw 5 has its moments but all in all it dosen't give the fans the same excitement we had with previous installments. My favorite parts of Saw 5 were the flashbacks to JIGSAW/HOFFMAN. To me that tells you if your favorite part has nothing to do with the twist or the traps this is no longer SAW. I hope SAW 6 is the final, and I hope they can revive this franchise for one last installment.
6/10

Posted By: sawfan3 at 3:56pm, January 23, 2009

I am in complete agreement with Mister X Zombie. The fourth installment is definitely my favorite and I think Saw 5 had some problems. Saw movies are known for being unpredictable but Saw 5 was just too easy to predict what would happen next. I hope Saw 6 doesn't fail at the Saw formula like this one did.

Posted By: Frantic Disembowelment at 5:52am, January 23, 2009

Would you plz stop it finally. I mean, it's marvelous how you always manage to find a fitting and proper plot for a sequel, but now I am eager to actually find out what really happens.

Posted By: Knight of Cydonia at 1:15am, January 23, 2009

Excellent film, great way to continue the franchise. I don't understand why so many people didn't like this film. If you were a fan of the first four films, then I don't see how you wouldn't enjoy Saw V. Bring on Saw VI!!!!

once again, great sequel with good traps

Posted By: jboyadjis at 10:35pm, January 21, 2009

This was one of the more lame saws out there. I will say that it is not the worst (#2 gets my vote for that one) This one was more of phycological horror and prepares us for the conclusion of this film series with number 6. I think they set themselves up with something to work with. However the transitions in this movie are just plain aweful and there really doesnt seem to be a point. I really only paid attention to the group scenes because they are what makes saw fun.

Posted By: Mister X Zombie at 1:38pm, January 20, 2009

SAW V is obviously the fifth installment of this growing franchise. I have been a die hard fan since the original, and even then I knew this was going to be an incredible addition to the horror genre. Let's face it, this series broke the mould when it came to horror movies. But now that it's five years later, can it still have that effect?

First let's look at the story. Jigsaw and his apprentice are dead, and I am happily able to say this, they are truly dead. Nobody comes back from the dead, thank god, right? Now where could they go that arguably the main characters are dead? Detective Hoffman is the final remaining link in the chain supposedly, and is out to remove any remaining witnesses or otherwise people who know of his connection with the Jigsaw murders. From here, it turns out someone does know of his connection, but who exactly that is, it's not determined fully from this movie. This will make more sense after seeing the film.

Besides the first film, I thought the fourth was the best one. So, naturally I was hoping after the abomination that was SAW II, and the less than perfect SAW III, they were finally getting back on track. I was both right and wrong, which may or may not be a good thing, we'll see as I am hoping this was only setting up SAW VI, if this is the case than it may ressurect its failure for something incredible.

My personal likes of the movie was the uncovering of Hoffman's past and his connection with Jigsaw. This takes up a greater part of the film, so I really enjoyed that. A good story is better than any gore or blood in a film, unless it is some pre-teen slasher movie, which is expected. But for SAW, I expect a good story and of course, the twist ending.

The downsides of this movie and probably the most noticeable, is the acting. The main trap of the movie consists of five survivors, who's relevance to the movie is nonexistent. It had no reason to be in the movie. Even this though could have been bearable if it were not for the horrible acting. The characters just felt boring, old, and stale; which five minutes into seeing them should not be the effect they give off. Even as they try and navigate through the traps, it was so sluggish and mediocre, you keep wondering why this is even necessary to the story?

Then comes the twist ending. Seriously, let's face why most of us see these movies. The endings are unlike any other, they are incredible. The first movie retains the best of all to this date. With the tag line, "You won't believe how it ends." they were not lying, but this was not a good thing. I couldn't believe how predictable and quite horrible this ending was. Through the whole thing, I was wondering when the twist comes. Then when the credits came on, I realized THAT was the twist.

Now with all this negative aside, it could be forgiven if it was setting up for the sixth SAW. If they used this as a stepping stone and redeem themselves, I will erase all doubt from the future of this series and forgive these mistakes. Now don't get me wrong, this is a great film, despite the horrible aspects, but you can't help but feel you were ripped off. Maybe we are hyping up the movies and expecting too much, or possibly they are really losing their touch. I hope SAW VI can prove us all wrong and show the series still has it.

Posted By: Rush66 at 10:11am, January 20, 2009

It's exactly what I expected and even more. It followed the series' tone and it seems that the creator seem to come back at the beginning of what made the first SAW good. See it if your a fan, don't if you're not.

Posted By: draconia at 4:29pm, January 19, 2009

Overall, i think this movie is cool, but not superb. The good is that it helps fill in holes from previous ones and the traps rock. The bad (for me) is that some scenes appeared to be rushed through and the twist wasn't shocking enough. Looking forward to the final one tho...I'm curious about Jill Tuck's box and what's going on with her.

When I First Saw This Film I Loved It The Twist Was Great Hoffman Was Tested And The Series Goes On The Twist Is He Was Being Tested By Strahm If Hoffman Won He Would Have Had Strahms Trust (Strahm Would Have Been In The Box) If Not He Would Cheat And Get In The Box Whitch Sets Up Saw VI He Being Failed And Now Mostly Will Have Mrsa From Being Cut By The Glass if He Hides The Cuts I Give The Film A 8/10 Stars

Posted By: MikeIsEvil at 11:48pm, January 15, 2009

A very different style of Saw movie. Just dont expect to have a big revealing over the top twist ending like in the others. It wasnt so much as a twist ending as it was (major spoiler) shocking to see Strahm get it. We all figured it, but who knew itd happen like that! Crunch.(end spoiler) Over all, acting was mediocre and the deaths I enjoyed very much. The saw/blade trap nearing the end made me almost look away(and that !!NEVER!! happens with me, ahah). Anyways, still a great Saw installment and much better than Saw 4 IMO. I just hope we get more closure in the final movie.

Went and watched this latest Saw film tripping my balls off on acid (Halloween tradition) and i was well entertained.

STOP MAKING SAWs!!!!!! its already gotten old and i'm tired of seeing them!

Posted By: psychotic9 at 5:27am, January 4, 2009

I refuse to see anymore after the 3rd one. Can't they stop making these?

Posted By: AshWilliams95 at 3:43am, December 24, 2008

I thought saw 5 was alright, nowhere near as good as the first 2 and alot better than the 3rd and 4th which were shit.

Storyline: Same tired old idea of a person or group of people trapped in a game where the have to kill each other or mutilate themselves to survive. Lots of flashbacks just like the 4th and of course a little twist at the end. 4/10

Acting: alright. Some scenes the actors didn't quite cut it and other scenes they did alright. 6.5/10

Special Effecs: Pretty damn realistic. Probably the best element of the whole movie. 10/10

Best Scene: The first trap at the beginning of the film. 9/10

Ending: A twist that was alright that ended up with the main character dying......YAY!:D 6/10

Overall the movie wasn't too bad better than the two before it but that isn't saying much at all. It had pretty good traps and good death scenes some of the ideas were original and I give this movie a 6.5/10

Posted By: thejigsawkiller123 at 3:19pm, December 21, 2008

saw 5 was a good movie not the best in the series and not the worst let me tell you good befor the bad.

contains spoilers

the good was how each flashback hoffman and jigsaw made sence fell into place fell right where the story needs to be.

the bad alot of unanserd questions like what was in the box what happend to gordan what was the link the between the people in the traps and why was hoffman living in the old saw 2 house

but over all i give saw v 4 skulls
for the traps and david hackle coppying darren bossemen

Posted By: sweetestsadist at 9:38am, December 21, 2008

Yeah, I gave up on this series on the third installment. When the traps stopped being mostly simple puzzles involving razors and barbed wire and started becoming like the over-elaborate schemes of a batman villain.

Part V isn't the worst one surprisingly. It was pretty much though (as they all are) two movies with unnecessary flashbacks. So my review is divided today. Yaaaaay!

Movie 1: The thing with the cops. How can anyone still care. I really can't tell which one is which half the time. The bad cop (Hoffman) is as boring a killer as you can get. Jigsaw made the movie and his disciples do nothing but keep the series going further than it needs to. And half the time I thought he was Strahm. They're the same character except one is good and one is bad. The last kill is well done, though, even if the trap is comic booky. 1.5 skulls.

Movie 2: In the vein of Saw 2, these portions involve a group of people that have to solve a puzzle broken up into little puzzles. These scenes have what I like about the Saw story. No dull flashbacks, traps that are designed to give you a chance to survive, and interaction between the victims. The only backstory is what the characters reveal about their intertwining histories ala Saw 1. Most of the traps are simple and realistic. No big machines that would cost thousands of dollars to build. Even though the killer isn't technically Jigsaw, all the victims get in these scenes are the audio/video messages, so it might as well be Jigsaw. No twist killer and no ulterior motives leading to unfair chances. Just plain, simple figure out the puzzles and you can escape my ghetto booby traps. Good Stuff. 3.5 skulls

Average: 2.5 Skulls.

Please don't listen to anyone .. SAW 5 rocks.

Posted By: icraveyourbrains at 12:41pm, December 8, 2008

After viewing Saw 4 I had little hope left for the series but Saw 5, despite its flaws it surpasses both 3 and 4 in every way. The blood doesn't flow as much as in 3&4 and this is a good thing. While I love a good splatter movie, the Saw series doesn't need copious amounts of blood and gore. The twist was predictable but it was still a clever twist that left me satisfied. It seems that finally after two abysmal sequels [Saw III and Saw IV] that Saw has gotten on the right track which is a breathe of fresh air for me.

Posted By: chambon913 at 4:47pm, December 3, 2008

This movie was crap, there wasn't any surprise at the end like the other 4 movies. Bousman or Wan should direct Saw 6 because they were the best directors of the Saw saga.

great movie and a great serie too

Posted By: Savinis_bitch at 9:53am, November 18, 2008

I think they should of left it to the first one for now. All these installments are boring and predictable. It doesn't get scary, it's too filtered out. I thought the first one was brilliant. It didn't need much, it was mainly set in one room and the ending was great, the twist was well thought out. But the rest seemed rushed and just a bit boring. I didn't care about the characters. Haven't seen this one yet, and i'm not interested.

Posted By: rusted31 at 3:30am, November 16, 2008

What rubbish!!! These movies just get worse with each installment. You can show Jigsaw in a million flashbacks and on video tape all you want but without him actually being the main killer WTF!! Hoffman is such a weak pathetic character with no screen presence whatsoever and to think he was with Jigsaw from the very beginning, come on!
The traps in this were utter crap and this film had no tension or suspense anywhere to be found. This is 'The Dream Child' and ' A New Beginning ' of the Saw series. Unworthy and most unwanted. Make it stop!!

Posted By: DiegOmen16 at 6:26pm, November 15, 2008

I dont think the movie should of had been bashed so hard because it was awesome what the hell is wrong with the people who didnt liked it,it was the best saw apart from the first and second saw there is because it was gory, scary and fun i did cared alot for the characters well except for the bold guy and the performances were good Meagan Good and Julie Benz were the best i cant wait to see the unborn to see Meagan Good again so dont listen to the assholes who didnt like saw 5 go see it yourself.(Oh the only thing i didnt liked was the ending i tought it was gonna have a twist but it didnt)

Posted By: halloweenfan08 at 9:27pm, November 14, 2008

Alright, I have to admit that I have not seen any other Saw movie prier to this, but this movie got me hooked on it. I think the movie had some great deaths, but a lot of people really don't like this sequel for some reason, but I think it's one of the best.

it was good

Posted By: Razorium at 7:32am, November 11, 2008

Ill try to be objectively...
Im a great Fan of the SaW franchise and I think that Saw V is totaly inappropriate for people who havent seen the other 4 saw films.
This Movie is made for Fans and no one else and I think a real Saw Fan will love the fifth one.
And of course this isnt the best saw film but it explains so many questions we fans had, that i can realy say that Hackl did a good job.
And SaW V holds his promise:
So In the End, All the pieces will fit together !

SaW: 9
SaW II:9
SaW III:10
SaW IV:10
SaW V:8

TO ALL THE HATERS OUT THERE THAT SAY SAW 5 SUCKS ARE NOT TRUE FANS OF THESE TYPE OF MOVIES. THIS MOVIE IS MORE OF A PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR MOVIE IF YOU HAVN'T SEEN ANY OF THE OTHER ONES MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T EVEN BOTHER SEEN THE 6TH ONE. I PERSONALITY CAN'T WAIT FOR THE GAME AND THE MOVIE JUST TOLET EVERY TRUE SAW FAN OUT THERE THE GAME COMES OUT 8/3/2009 AND THE NEXT MOVIE SOULD BE COMMING OUT 10/23/09 THE REASON WHY I SAY THAT IS BECAUSE THAT IS AROUND THE SAME TIME AS THIS ONE ALSO ITS ONE WEEK BEFORE HALLOWEEN.

Call me crazy, but I loved Saw V. Going in, I didn't know what to expect, since I hadn't really liked the 4th one and I had heard some pretty terrible things about this one. But to my surprise, I really enjoyed it. I liked how the stories and plotlines overlapped, as they normally do in these movies. The movie definitely wasn't flawless, but since I usually rate movies ridiculously high, I'm giving it 10/10. For comparison, here's how I rated the others:

Saw V 10/10
Saw III 10/10
Saw 9/10
Saw II 8/10
Saw IV 6/10

I am not going to preach about the movie as it is not my place to say wherever or not this movie is good or bad. But I feel I need to say one thing.

As much of the loose ties have been sorted and quite a few questions answered when will they leave the series to rest?

There is (and I won't deny this) a point in every horror series when someone has to have the gall to say enough is enough before things get out of hand.

Unfortunately if the director/writers insist on keeping the franchise going I am afraid that Jigsaw will be less known for his ingenious traps and more so for a tired, lost series.

End the SAW saga on a relative high when people considered it a good movie before it falls into the category of "so laughable it's not even good" category.

I love the SAW series too much to want it to become a spoof of itself. So I can only hope soon the directors will let the series lay to rest and let the rest of us love SAW for the unique films they were.

Thank You.

Posted By: jdckid67 at 3:41pm, November 6, 2008

While perhaps not being the most entertaining Saw movie, it was a needed installment. And by today's horror movie standards this will still blow anything out of the water currently. It sets up a great SAW 6 and SAW 5 felt as though it it was holding out all the stops for the next installment. I enjoyed it and I am a big fan of the series.

Posted By: horrorfan25 at 8:20pm, November 5, 2008

Honestly why is there so much hate for Saw V. I actually saw it and liked it and I'm a die-hard Saw fan. The traps were creative, the story line was good, and it kept my interest for 90 minutes or so. Even if you aren't a saw fan I highly recommend Saw V than that High school musical 3 crap. Overall I give Saw V 7 out of 10 or 3 1/2 out of 5 skulls.

bad flick

Posted By: PsyberTribe Records at 3:52pm, November 4, 2008

JUST BECAUSE THE NAME OF THE FILM IS GOING TO BE "SAW V", DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN THERE SHOULD BE ENDLESS GORE AND ACTION. I LOVED THE FACT THAT HACKL TOOK TIME TO GO BACK AND GET INTO DEPTH WITH SOME OF THE PREVIOUS PLOT HOLES FROM 3 AND 4. THE FILM ALSO GAVE A NICE BLOOD MEAL JUST IN TIME. I THINK THIS FILM IS FOR TRUE LOVERS OF THE FRANCHISE, AND NOT JUST THE GORE HOUNDS WHO THINK IT'S "COOL" TO BE INTO THE WHOLE TRAIN BEHIND THE FRANCHISE. I FOUND IT A WORTHY EDITION TO THE STORY, EVEN IF IT WAS NOT THE MOST ENTERTAINING.

Very effective sequel, I liked the way they combined story elements from the 1st movies using the same flash-back technique and introducing new characters at the same time. The gory scenes are breath-taking and physically painful to watch. I look forward to the extended DVD version as well as the new episodes.

Posted By: ZombieHolocaust at 1:14pm, November 3, 2008

This was a good movie on the beses of the story. but on sheer excitment (which is why i love the saw series) it seriously lacks. I like the following of hoffman character and i love the group thing like in saw II but the movie was a lil slow for me. And for the person below me who said this was a good ending to the series must be uniformed of saw 6 which was confirmed when 3 came out. Just so you guys know.

So for this being a saw film and it not living up to the expectations set forth by the very distubing commercials i give this movie a 5/10

I thought it was very interesting.I just wonder if VI will be the last one.

Posted By: seanthescaryguy at 6:16am, November 3, 2008

Greetings once again friends. I feel that I must write my review in defense of "Saw 5". (I'm not trying to offend or insult anyone's intellegence or feelings, we have a right to love horror in our own ways, so just bear with me)

4 sequels in 4 years, an impressive feat even by horror movie sequels standards. In a way, the Saw franchise has become a Halloween tradition for us, because every year we are treated to another helping of gore from our ingenious lunatic, Jigsaw. I now know why they made so many Freddy, Jason, and Michael movies back in the day; because we kept going see them! Admit it, you'll keep going see them every year no matter how absurd the story gets.

I found that this was the worst of the Saw movies, like most of you probly did. The ending was very abrupt and I was suprised that they left so many plot holes and loose ends. But like Jigsaw himself said in the film "You are part of a much bigger picture", and I realized this the moment it ended, when the credits started rolling, along with boo's and obsenities from the audience. This film is another piece in a story that will be clear and complete when it ends (if ever that happens).

I think that people will be more reluctant when going see Saw 6 after this one, in my opinion, dropped the ball. That being said, I think it's brilliant how the writers managed to keep the story fresh and engaging after 4 sequels, as well as keeping the gore and torture sequences as creative and greusome as ever. Who knows, maybe Jigsaw won't run out of ideas even after Saw 8: Jigsaw takes Manhattan. *I couldn't resist =)*

Posted By: JadedOutcast at 1:51am, November 3, 2008

I'm not going to preach about how big a fan I am of the Saw movies. Nor am I going to spoil the movie for those who haven't watched it yet. I hate when people do that to me, so I won't be a hypocrite and do it to them. What I will say is that I was so excited to see this movie that I stumbled onto this website and ended up reading every single review on the movie{yes, even the ones with spoilers, couldn't resist}, and then I went and paid money to watch it anyway. While plenty of you liked the movie, a lot of you were downright BRUTAL about it. I will say that Saw 5 did tone down the blood, guts, and torture a bit{don't worry, there's still plenty of it, in my book}, but what people have to understand, at least in my opinion, is that this is the fifth movie in the series. While it is the torture, suffering, and traps that help set the Saw series apart from the rest of the horror scene, after five movies, an endless bloodbath of torture and traps yet again would bave been a bit tedious. I rather liked the fact that they toned it down a bit to give us some back story. The Saw series fascinates me because it is not just about some hockey masked monster randomly chopping up a group of kids. Think about it, in your mind for a moment. Some of the things portrayed in these movies could really happen, and for me, that makes it all the more engaging. I did notice, after reading these reviewa, that even most of those who said they hated Saw 5 are planning to see Saw 6. Good for the writers. It means they did what they intended with this movie. They left you wanting more.

Posted By: biledemon3 at 9:48pm, November 2, 2008

this movie sucked... it was the end to a good run in a series of films though...

Posted By: Justin Warren at 9:33pm, November 1, 2008

Excellent continued extension of the series; I enjoy the character of Hoffman and don't consider following his story a "god damn insult" as said in the review. The flashbacks were clever, and it set itself up for a promising climax.

Posted By: supafox at 5:56pm, November 1, 2008

I've come to the conclusion you can not please anyone when it comes to horror films.

I personally liked this one. No it's not my favorite, but definitely a good installment as far as fifths in a series go. I went into this knowing what to expect. Technically, this is the middle of a "second trilogy". Most middle films lack the action or closure of the other two films and is used as a transition. This is what Saw V is. They are setting up the finale by tying together the loose ends from all the other films.

Even though the "victims" in this movie were only thrown in for the trap factor, it provided enough gorey entertainment between plot developments.

The traps were decent, but I'm glad they weren't over the top as they have been in previous films.

The only gripes I have with this movie are the fact that Tobin Bell had less screen time than usual, and the death at the end. I was sad. =(

But overall, it was a fun film and a decent installment to a great series. Here's to saw VI!

Posted By: downward_spiral at 4:29pm, November 1, 2008

It was alright. Not my fav of the series.

Posted By: bdwolfe312 at 10:56am, November 1, 2008

This one was pretty bad.

I was game for Amanda to become the killer and follow her around. I mean, Jason as we now know him didn't come along until the third film. But to suggest that I actually care enough about this third party character to follow him around through multiple films is pretty ridiculous. The signature "twist" wasn't really a twist at all. It was less confusing than "Saw IV", but a little stupider nonetheless.

This is, however, the direction I've expected the films to go, and I hope it continues in this direction. I want the opportunity to still be gullible enough to See "Saw XIII." It's been a long time since horror has had an undying franchise like this.

Posted By: loliclown at 9:47am, November 1, 2008

I liked the first two, but lost interest. Is it ever going to end?

Posted By: maviemaven at 2:22am, November 1, 2008

My opinion of SAW 5 was total and utter diappointment!
I am an avid fan of this series as it is now and thought they could have and should have done much better. Instead it seemed to me that this was more of a montage of the past 4 films. Still left hanging and want more!!!!! No pun intended :-)
I'm not going to wait with as much anticipation for SAW 6 as I did for 5. I must say that I did enjoy watching all of the movies together back to back, to back.

One other thing that bothered me was where was the nurse we saw on the poster ? The one with all the needles in her face ?!

Posted By: philsaw101134 at 9:02am, October 31, 2008

Honestly, some of the reasons I saw in the BD review were retatred.
The fans like OTHER characters than Jigsaw you know.

ANYWAYS, this was either the BEST SAW FILM to date, or the BEST SAW SEQUEL.
The acting was more intense than I've seen it in since Saw III.
The gore factor was great, especially with the opening scene and the last 2 traps.
The suspense was great for it seemed to be more about story than gore, rather than just showing you people dying.
The 5 person trap was clever, and still relevant as a THEME and as (SPOILERS!!!!!!!!)

part of setting up Strahm as a scapegoat.
David Hackl's directing was an amazing gift to the series, for it wasn't as quick cutty, but more steady and suspenseful.
And for those of you idiots who saw "ZOMG I SAW THE ENGING COMINGGG"....
I'm sure you didn't see the VERY ending sequence coming, rather than the twist.
If you say you did, you're trying to be a smartass.

Saw V :5/5

Posted By: bigblue330 at 12:47am, October 31, 2008

...........the first saw movie to be bad...BRING BACK DAREN!!!!!! i dont blame the writers for this movie it really was the directors fault saw 6 will probbly be straight to DVD,i am a HUGE fan of the saw movies but this one was way to drawn out and very unintresting it wasnt like the others and i really think the ending sucked the best trap for saw 5 was the seat you didnt leave from....and they should have put Betsy Russel(Jill) in it more, she has a toatall of about 1 minute on screen and it sucked they need to give her more development explain more victim stories and NOT use this director again...

Posted By: Lucksaw at 12:21am, October 31, 2008

For being a fifth installement of a series, it´s amazing what they have done.
For a twist of the Saw history, it´s a little bit dissapointing, but a great job.
Way to go Hackl with your opera prima1

Posted By: bybeeb17 at 9:57pm, October 30, 2008

saw 5 was pretty good. it does tie things together and now saw 6 should be something new from the previous 4 with flashbacks. yes there will be flashbacks because the flashbacks are the whole point of the saw story. also do you know that saw 3,4,5 was in a time lapse of like 2 or 3 days. its not like we have watched a year of saw killings here.

think about this, i dont think that saw 5 has actually made it it the beggening of saw 4 where he finds the tape in jigsaws stomach. so there still is some more saw to be seen. i am pumped for it.

Posted By: SimonDark at 8:29pm, October 30, 2008

I can't wait for SAW VI after seeing this film! We are really starting to find out about a lot of the characters. Although not the best in the series, it definately gave me a good gory show and I always love the mystery of the SAW series, like what is going to happen next, who is going to die next and what the twist in the end will be? I did wish for a little more screen time for Betsy Russell, however, but thought by the end that somehow her role will be larger in the sixth film because of the box she received in her first scene. Costas Mandylor is also well as Hoffman here, and I need to see a little more tobin Bell in the future films, he rocks! All in all, a satisfying thriller that will leave you wanting more SAW by the end as usual! Can't wait for Halloween '09 and SAW VI!

Posted By: fordwin6 at 2:28pm, October 30, 2008

It sucked i knew what was going to happen at the end within about 15 min.It wasnt even as good as the fourth one eeeeeerrrrrrr.

Posted By: Bumper1 at 5:30am, October 30, 2008

Although i don't necessarily think Saw 5 deserved that low a rating of 1 and a half i do agree with the reviewer that the twist was easy to guess with regards to the 4 people in the main game and the fact the revelation at the end isn't really a revelation but a re-cap of what has just happened.

I was dissapointed, i was hoping to see a movie based on the tape Hoffman finds in Jigsaw's belly but that wasn't even touched on (Saw 6 anyone???, then easily guessed Saw 7 will be Jill's turn to play psycho killer). Strahm's head in a box scene was absolutely awesome but everyone expected him to die so final tape left by Jigsaw is absolute crap (maybe Hoffman left the tape but does he have the necessary brain to do so without Jigsaw's influence, i doubt it) as he like everyone else would of thought it was over.

I would probably give this film 3 out of 5 just because of my love for the franchise and the odd bit that made me go "ouch" but there just wasn't a Saw feel to the movie, even if Hoffman had muttered "Game Over" to Strahm at the end, atleast it would of put a smile on my face and gave me some anticipation for the 6th.

Portraying Hoffman as the protagonist in the final few films is such a bad decision, his character is poor and very badly acted. Why Amanda couldn't of been kept in it is beyond me. Imagine a final battle between Amanda & Jill, a scorned ex against an obsessesed girl, who is dependent on Jigsaw like she was dependent on crack. That would of been a mouth watering concept.

Overrall i just feel robbed i didn't get to see the movie i was expecting and now i have to wait another year to see the dickhead that is Hoffman get dealt with by the main man Jigsaw.

Posted By: Sawfan3000 at 6:18pm, October 28, 2008

To start i not sure i understand why people need to judge a series they dont have any intrest in.
with that i will procede i think we can agree certain things were differnt about this movie then prev. saw films. The movie was low on the gore scale which while somewhat contrary to the trends with V's predicessers set in place. If you look back the fist ,and undesputedly best movie in the series, film did not have much "cringe".
the ending was slightly disapointing as the progressivly worse twists did effect this film. I personally hate the intrtroduction of Hoffman into the early story. As it seems like a write in and was quite obviosly not conceved till the 3rd film.
the traps were inventive but the blarringly obviouse theme of teamwork dampened the effectivness of them.
I personally miss the pattern of the 1st; using smaller traps to help advance the story and one in depth trap overachingly the concern of the film. Since the 2nd the pattern, dont misunderstand i love the series, has been to force a group of people to a series or marathon of individual traps. Why has the series disfigured itself so much. Try watching the films 1-3 then 4-5,and later 6. The movies are simply 2 trilogys with many distict traits and functions to the series.

***SPOILERS***
I consider myself a huge saw fan. They're actually one of my favorite franchises. They have become the Halloweens and Friday The 13th's of our generation. I loved Saw 1 & 2, 3 was okay, 4 not as good but still somewhat okay. But 5, 5 quite frankly was horrible. 5 or 6 people in a dungeon, have to escape rooms otherwise nail bombs will blow. Up every 20 minutes or so a nail bomb would go off. The people down in the sewer didn't relate to the plot at all. We have to follow two completely unlikable characthers. All of the traps are really lame. Strahm and Hoffman are completely unlikable. There was no twist. Or there was a twist but it really sucked. Jigsaws lines were horribly written. I love Tobin Bell, but there was no way anybody could deliver "murder is distasteful...to me". But being a fan of the saw franchise, you can't ignore the movie. It doesn't change the fact that I will be going to six. I just hope six doesn't do as bad. Instead of cranking out a Saw every year. Why don't the writers take some time to come up with smart trap ideas and smart plot twists. 5's twists were horrible and completely ridiculous. "We were supposed to work together the whole time!" Is not a shock at all. And the ending, boy, that pushed it over the edge. It answered no questions and just asked more. But you can bet you're ass I'll be seeing Saw 6.

Saw V was my favorite of the series. All those who criticize the film for being predictable should become film writers so I can show them how hard it is to write something that isn't predictable. It could have gone one of two ways: personally, I think the writers went with the ending that was more audience satisfying. I would rather see a dozen more Saw sequels than another bad remake of a classic. Mr. Disgusting gave a good review to the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which to me is one of the stupidest films ever made and an insult to the far superior original, while he lambasted this film and unfairly insulted anyone who enjoyed it. If you are a Saw fan, you will likely enjoy this film, especially if you have a working knowledge of the previous installments in the series.

I absolutely loved this movie Ive loved em all. This one cleared up a lot of questions.

Posted By: zooey at 6:49pm, October 27, 2008

I disagree with Mr. disgusting
Saw 5 was what it was---a new story wrapping
up all the loose ends and I was glad to see Hoffman
walk away again b/c I am sick of all the plot twists
and am glad there isn't another apprentice. My only
grievance is there wasn't more traps, but there will be another movie. I walked away from SAW 5 feeling
dirty with a smug smile on my face which I cannot simply ask for more. Mr. Disgusting I say if you want this to be like TCM then write your own damn script for it and for all you other jacobites don't watch SAW if all you're going to do is put it down and criticize it to death. SAW 5 is a continuation of the series and I think now they can play new games with a new bad guy.

I CAME TO WATCH SAW 5,
NOT SAW 1234.
WHAT WAS WITH ALL OF THE FLASHBACKS ??
I LIKE WHEN IT GOES INTO DEPTH OF THE LAST MOVIES BUT NOT TO THE POINT WHERE THATS THE ENTIRE MOVIE.
WORST OF THE SAW FRANCHISE. THE TWIST AT THE END GAVE ME BLUE BALLS, I EXPECTED EVERYTHING COMING.
AND THE GORE BARELY MADE ME CRINGE.
ALTHOUGH THE ARM SAW WAS AMAZING, MOST OF THE TRAPS WEREN'T TOO MEMORABLE.

I AGREE WITH KESAME, STRAHM PULLED SOME CHRISTIAN BALE GIBBERISH.

OVERALL, QUITE DISAPPOINTING

Posted By: BloodyAnneBoleyn at 2:22pm, October 27, 2008

Eh I think after this one No more saw movies need be made, lets just end the franshise. gory yes, storyline no, got really sleepy in the theater.

I didn't think it was a great movie but I did think it flowed better than 4. I didn't like how it seemed in 4 that they forgot about 3 pretty much until the end and hastily threw in Jeff at the last second, it seemed like his story needed to be flushed out more. One of the things I appreciate about these films is that there really isn't a "happy" ending and the line between hero and villain is very blurred. The story behind the game in this one I liked a lot better even if it wasn't that hard to figure out. All the "players" were tied together for a reason even if the game had nothing to do really with Jigsaw (which it never does other than he finds these people". This film made and effort to touch base with the previous films, which I liked even though Mr. D didn't and I think the setup to the next one is interesting and took me a minute to think about. It was actually something I complained about until I thought about it. I still think the first one set the bar but this one was decent and better than 4 even if the plot doesn't stretch your imagination too much. I as well am not too fond of what happened with Amanda although they kind of showed in 3 how unstable she was and am ok with it as long as they don't keep introducing new "disciples" or however you want to term it. If you like these movies you won't be too disappointed and ready for 6, which should probably (hopefully) be the last.

Posted By: Kocarie at 11:33am, October 27, 2008

That was the best saw movie. When the five people were in the room and the video said i emplore you to do the opposite I knew he wanted them to work together. By the forth test is when the lady finally figured it out. DUH! "I emplore you to do the opposite." Agent Strahm was dumb. At first jigsaw said not to go into the other room. But he did. Then he went after Hoffman. I wouldn't have followed. I would have gotten out of the hospital and left the state. Somewhere Hoffman wouldn't be able to find me.

Out of the Four test the group of people had to do the last one seemed more painful. They could have been done with that test so fast if they would have worked together. For instance:
Charles could of been the one that got the key. Unlocked his and then when to the remaining four and got them out of it in a matter of seconds. Then the second room. The two men could have been breaking the jars and the three girls opening the tunnels. Two people could have gotten into two of the tunnels and the other person could have run and got in the third tunnel. The third room was explained. Each of them grab a prob and touch the tub. The door would have opened. Then the last and final room. Five people-ten pints. 2 pints each. They wouldn't have to have keep moving their hand further and further in. Damn they are just so stupid.
This movie was good. Not as good as the first three but it was better than the fourth one becuase it explained a lot more. Hoffman followed the rules and Amanda didn't. Guess what she died. Agent Strahm didn't listen to the whole tape. If I heard that I could live i would have gotten in the box. Hoffman lives damn. Let's just hope the sixth one is better. but there isn't anyone else he can test. Jigsaw picked the people and the traps. Hoffman just set it up. People might say it's gay but it's a good movie. People that have a problem with the movies should stop watching them.

There isn't much I can add to Mr Disgusting's review as it is pretty spot on.
I to am a big fan of the SAW series. I eagerly waited for a year for this installment of the story.
The tag i have been seeing all over the net 'you'll never guess how it ends' must have been from 'plot lines for dummies' book series.
Yes I did guess how it ended. You know those TV shows where they have 4 or 5 episode detailing the seasons main plot and then have 18 filler episodes....this was a filler, and a boring one at that.
David Hackle should have stayed as the production designer. Maybe that's hash and the writers where asleep, either way it was a flop. Bad acting, bad script, boring directing.
Why did you leave us Darren!!

Posted By: Guitarded at 11:46pm, October 26, 2008

Wow, sad to see that most horror fans can't follow a story. It really does all make sense. A fucking genius wrote these movies, not a loose end (at least not that isn't meant to be a loose end). I agree that there wasn't as much gore in this one, but fuck, what was there was fucking great!! and three standout gore scenes is pretty damned good. If I read one more "i can't follow this story, it doesn't make sense" review, I'm going to hunt that person down and give them a fucking education past grade 9. This one puts everything together so well.

I'm extremely disappointed. Being that Saw I and II were in my mind very original and unpredictable, and also 2 of my favorite Horror/Thriller movies, this franchise is dying. At one point in this movie I actually fell asleep. I'm not joking guys, I literally fell asleep!!!! At this point they are throwing plots out the window and trying to get you into the theatres on traps alone. While the traps aren't TERRIBLE in this movie, 2 are actually good, they aren't what they used to be. Now they are just back tracking in the storyline and it seems to make no sense to me why they are doing it. I mean seriously guys. Having Hoffman involved from the very beginning? That is kinda taking a little away from I and II in my opinion. But all in all they must be doing something right because I know as soon as VI hits the theatres I'll be there opening weekend. Just hope that VI will really be the end though. Cause if they haven't already ruined the franchise, if they make another IV or V people will just think of the series as a joke (if they haven't already) instead of what I, II, and even possibly III really is. And that is really good movies.

First before I start I would like to state that I go to saw 5 for story only for story so I ignore film quality alot when it comes to how the acting is done and how the story is ran

I couldn't see anything wrong with the movie beside the first scene it was painful to watch that good of a movie fall to being shot like a sci-fi channel movie but it's story beside for the first scene kept me from noticing the degradation in film style all anyway I believe story and gore when just looking at those two elements alone were good by themselves the traps where inventive in the fact the whole neck tie trap was a row of GYM LOCKERS! the final trap which used a trap that was suppose to be in the third one seen in the forth one but actual scene was cut out was a good little thing. I just hope the scream queen competition hosted by Shanwie smith herself can give them atleast a decent actress and hopefully the stop it there

10 for story especially when drilling down to the core of it's story even saluting characters that were from saw 1
7 for gore they could have done much more better gore
3 for acting Strahm doing that voice that reminded me of Christian Bale's batman put it up there for me along with Tobin's acting and Hoffman's acting also the guy who played the tweaker was good

Posted By: Natarella at 8:44pm, October 26, 2008

I enjoyed Saw V, although it did lag a little big through the middle. I don't like the thought that Hoffman was there from the beginning though. That didn't make much sense to me. However, I thought it was reasonably amusing. Besides who here doesn't like a good saw to the hand, with a floppy lobster claw ending?

Posted By: Lusciferous at 8:17pm, October 26, 2008

The Saw series is a series that will live on forvever, a series of legendary movies. Saw 5, however, is not worthy of being known as one of these legendary movies. SAW 5 WAS THE MOST DISAPPOINTING MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN! Everything that made me fall in love with the Saw movies in the first place was taken away in Saw 5, and I was angry for the entire night after watching the movie. How this movie is getting more than even 2 skulls out of five is something that I just can't comprehend. This movie, in my opinion, does not even deserve 2 skulls.

Posted By: evilgooey at 8:08pm, October 26, 2008

The problem with the entire SAW franchise, is that the writers and producers keep asking the question, "OK... How do we get ourselves out of this corner that we painted ourselves into?" And their answer has always been, "OK... Lets add another house onto this one."
SAW V is deffinately a worthy SAW sequel. I got what I expected. But I feel it's deffinately time to take a couple of years off, to develop a really good script that can carry the franchise forward, tie up all loose ends, and "set up" a few sequels at a time.
A Note on the BOX OFFICE for the opening weekend... My viewing was ruined by more than 50 early teenage girls, who obviously paid money to see High School Musical, and snuck in to ruin the horror movie I was watching by giggling, texting, talking louder than they had to, and asking stupid questions, like "What's Going On Here?". And I'm conflicted by this. Granted, it's great to see young people at horror flicks. But on the other hand, this is money away from supporting the horror genre. When I was a kid, my parents took the entire family to see the Latest Friday the 13th films. And that's something you see very little of these days. Kind of a shame I guess.

Posted By: Horror518 at 6:05pm, October 26, 2008

Ok...First of all I would like to say that like " Mortis45" I am a huge fan of the Saw movies. I had HUGE expectations for Saw V!
Next...I would like to say that each Saw has its good and its bad traps.
In The first saw the bad trap was the Razor Wire Trap.
In Saw II it was the Fire Stove thing Obi Was in.
In Saw III the bad trap(s) were the Freezer room and the rotten pigs trap.
In Saw IV it was the Handicap Trap!
Which Brings Me to Saw V
The Trap With The tall guy and the one with Luba in it were straight up gay. And I think knowing that if they all would have worked together, they all would haved survived. That would be a better twist then the weak ass twist they had at the end.
Anothe problem was there was not enough Jigsaw in this film...?
But dont get me wrong there was some good things about Saw V like the Glass Box Trap, and Seth's trap at the begining. I also like how the took the time to think before the did anything (smart).
I dont blame David Hackl for makin the Suck ass twist. I blame the writers who made up the story, because there the ones who made me wait 1yr for this movie and [for the last time] the ending sucked!
I really hope that Saw VI will be better then V.

*SPOILERS*
ok, ive got to say it wasnt horrible. it was ok. some of the traps seemed a tad lame, such as that one with the keys in the bottles and the bathtub scene. i was expecting a lot more blood and gore. most of it was just plot and background in the film and everything, which i was actually expecting but not really wanting. the pendulum trap was good, although it wasnt too new since it had been out before the movie. the two traps that i liked were the ones where they had to put their arms in the saw blades and then the final trap, just because it caught me by surprise. both of the twists in the films were actually pretty cool. i just think that the movie was too short and didnt live up to the gorefest that i thought it was going to be, but it still continued that saga and i will still be ready for the sixth one to come out (hopefully) next year.

Posted By: ZombieBrains13 at 5:37pm, October 26, 2008

I still think they should have stopped at Saw III,
Saw IV was lame, but for some reason I enjoyed Saw V more, but it was still pretty bad. The highlights of the film were Julie Benz and every scene with Tobin Bell.

Posted By: Mortis45 at 5:35pm, October 26, 2008

Let me start this all off by saying i'm a huge Saw fan. I love the movies and they've become just as much a part of my Halloween season each year as anything else. I felt that up until the third installment, they kept on getting better, but the fourth kinda lost me a little. With Jigsaw and Amanda both dead and this dude Hoffman taking over who I really didn't care for, I was losing interest in the series. And now an entire film of just Hoffman carrying on Jigsaw's work? It didn't sound all that enticing to me. But it really doesn't matter what the plot was cause nothing was gonna keep me from seeing the next installment in the franchise.

And that brings us to Saw 5. The premise of the film is actually quite interesting. It's a cat and mouse game between the new Jigsaw, Hoffman, and fellow detective Strahm. We are shown that Hoffman, following the events of Saw 3, tried to kill off Strahm (in that water box trap you've probably all seen by now) and make it look like Jigsaw did it. But Strahm manages to escape from the trap and throughout the movie he pieces together that Hoffman is the one who's carrying on Jigsaw's legacy. Accordingly, he goes on the hunt for him while Hoffman works on tying up all the loose ends.

Now like I said, I figured the whole franchise died along with Jigsaw and Amanda and didn't expect much from this one. But i'm happy to say it blew my expectations out of the water. It's not an amazing movie, but it's pretty damn interesting and there's no questioning that it was a fun time. I kinda felt like this one was made to seperate the true Saw fans from the ones who just come to see a gory horror movie around this time of the year. The usual gore of the series is wayyyy toned down and it's mostly background behind the scenes flashback type of stuff, that only true fans would find any enjoyment in. It's essentially a film made by Saw fans for the Saw fans.

But a Saw film without gore? How can that be made for us? That's one of the main reasons we go to see these movies isn't it? Yes, it is. There's hardly any gore in this movie, the body counts pretty low, and every death that does happen pretty much happens off screen. But surprisingly, it didn't bother me. The movie was so interesting and engaging that I almost didn't need to see any gore. I was more interested in all the other stuff. I will say though that when the gore did come, the effects were pretty bad, which is the complete opposite i'd expect from this series. The effects have always been top notch but there's a couple scenes in this one that look real amateur. The traps are also all kinda lame but there's more to this entry than just mindless gore, so again it didn't bother me all that much.

I didn't care for Hoffman going into this one but I can't say I dont care for him anymore. How he became the next Jigsaw is pretty interesting stuff (don't worry, you find out all the answers) and I kinda like the dude now! Strahm, on the other hand, I did not care for. The actor who portrayed him (Scott Patterson) was pretty awful and the character as a whole was just really annoying. There always seems to be one actor in each of the films that stinks it up. Most of the scenes he was in involved him talking to himself and basically explaining everything to us that we just saw, as if we're all dumbasses. There's also enough Jigsaw flashbacks in this one to satisfy but sadly, the movies lacking on the Amanda front. There's a very brief shot of her from the neck down, but that's all we see.

While you do need to have seen all the previous films in the series to understand it all, it's not hard to follow in the least, which was nice. The Saw films have a tendency to sometimes be a bit confusing and it can take a good while after you leave the theatre before you piece it all together but this one was pretty straightforward. And that's surprising given how all over the place it is. We're taken back to stuff from pretty much all of the previous films and, as usual, stuff from in between that we've never seen. They go back to many of the sets of the traps from prior installments, and that's all pretty cool.

So what about this ending? The whole tagline was "You won't believe how it ends." Well, let's just say you will believe how it ends. There's really no twist and it's not shocking in the least but I must say it is pretty cool. The final moments are quite badass and that's all i'll say about that.

One of the best things about going to see a Saw film is discussing it with friends after, is it not? The movies are so in depth and well thought out that it's a lot of fun to pick apart and discuss it all. As my girlfriend pointed out, it's pretty fitting that the killers name is Jigsaw, given how the series is one giant Jigsaw puzzle. I'm still trying to fit all the pieces together, and that's the fun of it. Granted, all the pieces really don't fully fit together and it's more like the filmmakers are drawing over what was already on each little puzzle piece to make them all fit the way they're supposed to, but oh well. It's all in the name of entertainment.

What more can I say. If you love the series, go see this one. Although i'm sure you have already. If you need any more enticing, the Friday the 13th and My Bloody Valentine 3D trailers play beforehand! It's not a perfect movie but they keep on finding a way to make seemingly uninteresting stuff very interesting and make it all work, and for that I applaud the makers of these movies. This could've been the worst movie ever made and i'd still be excited about seeing Saw 6 next year, so that's saying something. Fortunately, this was another good installment and i'm looking forward to seeing where it goes from here. Some may feel like this was a watered down version of the others, but I like the new direction they're going with it. You can only show so much blood and guts before it becomes old. Yes, the Saw movies have always been a lot deeper than just blood and guts, but it seems like the focus is being shifted to the more intellectual stuff, and it's refreshing to see. They took a chance and it worked. Although i'm sure many fans will disagree with me. I wish I didn't have to wait a whole year to see the next one! Saw is still alive!

Posted By: Repo!Screams at 5:08pm, October 26, 2008

Yea..

Ummmmm..

That movie was a waste of time and money, the worst of the franchise. I mean, when you go to see a Saw film you expect to be confused and you want to know what happens next, in this movies case.. You want to get out of the theater and you want to get your money back. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. The kills are lame, there is absolutely no suspense. The movie poster is the best of the 5 movies though. But all in all, this movie had to much to live up too and it just didn't live up to the franchise. Also, I liked how the people were all given chances to survive, in this movie they don't get a chance. So bleh.. Giving it a 3 cause they finally added a black women to the traps, I've been waiting for that.

Posted By: fenderxx at 4:43pm, October 26, 2008

disappointing, i never thought i could laugh out loud at a saw movie but that crazy detective talking to himself did the trick, i could not stop laughing it was so absurd and ridiculous.

Posted By: TheBurning at 4:02pm, October 26, 2008

I'm a fan of Saw 1-4 and just got back from seeing Saw 5. I'm very disapointed with this installment. The movie went nowhere, and plot was lame. I thought I was watching a direct-to-video movie. The makers of this film should be embarressed. Their about to ruin this series if they keep making more. Hopefully Saw 6 is the last one which comes out next Halloween. I will still see it. I think Saw 6 will fail, but in order for the film to be successful they should make it in 3-D. SAW VI-3-D! Death Traps Comin' At ya to theatre near you October 30th 2009.

Posted By: waylon309 at 4:01pm, October 26, 2008

Whether it scored on twists, or gore or whatever, Saw 5 continued to fill in all possible loose ends while still leaving a few openings from the previous movies and open up a continuing story to continue with. How many times can you watch the same person kill over and over, whats wrong with a person or people continuing on where someone left off. Just like real life, there is always the possibility of a copycat. This series is following the real life possibility that theses event CAN happen. Good job to the cast and crew of SAW 5, keep the kills going.

Posted By: leather_face27 at 1:34pm, October 26, 2008

I love the gore involved in this movie the twist was weak but it was still a good movie

Posted By: uhakid07 at 1:25pm, October 26, 2008

i dont understand all the hate with this film.. i thought it was great. a huge improvement over saw 4

Posted By: Midnight Crow at 9:55am, October 26, 2008

As a chapter in the Saw series alone, this film stands very strong.
As a chapter in the Saw series as a whole, this film fits in nicely and not only fills in missing pieces, adds depth, it also preludes to the madness that will be Saw VI the, final chapter.

All in all, the "lead" actors were fantastic! (save a few lines like ... KILLING IS DISTASTEFUL!!!)

The traps, excluding the Sewer Bomb and Electric Bathtub were beyond awesome.

The twist to this movie, is very subtle but quite amazing, some people even wrongly assume the twist, I'd advise you re-watch it.

And the Grand Finale / Final Scene is on such a grand scale, I personally couldn't have asked for a better end to the chapter and a prelude to the final. Saw V delivered.

this was the best saw yeat

Posted By: MichaelMyers1031 at 4:13am, October 26, 2008

When I was going to see the piece of garbage I remembered how much I disliked part IV and thought this couldn't be any worse. Well I was wrong this was much worse this was a complete waste of time shouldn't have been made and everyone who spent money of this deserves a refund because this was absolutely terrible. The traps were done good although every single part of this movie has to have someone looking up files. That was the whole routine: (Look up files, Look up more files, Death Trap, Look up even more files, Death Trap, More Files, Death Trap, Death Trap, Even More Files, Death Trap)
Worse entry in the series by far acting sucked please don't waste your time on this movie. I'm expecting a prequel or even a remake of Saw VI, because I'm sure they know they F*cked up here and the Saw series is now very stale and who wants to see it continue after this garbage.

Posted By: Ashedmaniac at 3:18am, October 26, 2008

Holy crap does a lot of the criticism of this movie not make sense! So many people critiquing this film as though the twist IS the film. A common mistake among those who don't actually follow the series and instead just like gore. So what? You knew the twist from the beginning. Do you know why? It was spelled out for you by Hackl's superior direction! But the film isn't about the twist...or the gore...or the traps. It's about the story. And the story was clear and fairly linear and made sense. This provided some sense of closure even while continuing the series (and allowing VI to exist). About what one could expect. It's probably the best film in the Saw series, but it's not the best "Saw film". By that, I mean it doesn't live up to the "huge twist" and "tons of gore" construct everybody seems to associate with the series...which now makes everyone spend the whole movie trying to figure out the twist rather than accepting or considering the narrative. Naysayers of these films need to learn what they're talking about (and that these films have depth) and those who relentlessly praise these films need to recognize that they're not perfect. Overall, a solid filmgoing experience, an adequate Saw film (definitely behind at least three of the others) and a better film than possibly all the other Saw movies from a general film perspective.

Posted By: RiKAnSolja1 at 2:45am, October 26, 2008

It was ok..Better then SAW IV but still not great. I think they need to hire new writers cause so far, The writers of Feast have done nothing but horrible stories. But thats just my opinion. I really hope SAW VI is the final film.

Posted By: certifiedx at 1:11am, October 26, 2008

Surprised to see BD gave it such a harsh review. I'd say it was the most entertaining since the first. The death traps were BRUTAL - possibly the most wince-inducing of all the Saw movies and the plot was less tangled than IV making it easier to follow. Loved it!

Posted By: Martyr-X at 1:08am, October 26, 2008

I saw "Saw V" opening night with a friend and wasent sure how it'd be after seein the official BD review but i have to say i really like it. it definatly isnt the best, but it definatly isnt the worst, for me anyway. but hey, everyone has their own taste but i thought 5 was a damn good SAW film. The original "Saw" & "Saw IV" are still my favs though.

Posted By: zensign87 at 12:32am, October 26, 2008

i guess people were just ready to hate saw 5...but i really enjoyed it. It was LOADS better than saw IV...i dont get everyone saying how it was worse. that movie was just a confused mess and i didnt really give a shit about the twist involving hoffman, it felt cheap. that being said it was good to get a little more info on him in saw v...and the gore scenes were pretty wince inducing. also anything with julie benz in it is automatically pretty good.

definately not as bad as people are saying. but they really need to have a HOLY SHIT kinda finish with saw 6 if they want this series to end well

Posted By: NamesCody at 11:57pm, October 25, 2008

Great movie, I loved every bit of it - I'm glad that it wasn't as gory as previous ones and that it tied more in with how Hoffman became to be Jigsaws apprentice, Brilliantly tied into the rest of the movie and left tons of questions. I liked this one better then the saw IV by far and can't wait for VI.

Posted By: reesi3la at 11:31pm, October 25, 2008

i just got home from watching this with my boyfriend, and im kind of in the middle with this 1, i liked it, made me scream cause of how the traps were, especially the 2nd to last trap with the razors...ahhhhhh...its like i can feel it, it looked so real, and the torture scenes were really good, but on the other hand, i didnt like the fact that this movie was the only movie out of all 5 of the saw movies, that left me with the most questions!! kind of aggravating. but i will watch it again, maybe online this time, 2make sure i didnt miss anything

Posted By: Goblin51O at 11:08pm, October 25, 2008

the movie i thought had a lot of useful
info to fill in the blanks

SAW V Wow i honestly think its the best one yet, some people said no story line "wrong" people say no gore "wrong" Bone snaping, guts all there and people say omg how many saws are there gonna be "Friday 13 N the nightmare on elm street" need i say more this is the best seriers on horror movies, saw 5 is amazing, traps, story can't fault it they got it right with this one,

Posted By: Stupid-Eyed at 4:27pm, October 25, 2008

Saw V is as good, if not better then the others do far. I always can't wait to see what kinds of "games" people will have to play. I was also hoping more blood, bone breaking and guts...and in this film I got all three of those.

Posted By: gore nut at 4:16pm, October 25, 2008

well i hate to say this but SAW 5 isnt as good as the others! i know jigsaw is dead but he was still the star in the 4th!where the hell was he in this one! "you won't beleve how it ends!" it ends crap!!

Posted By: zombiefan09 at 2:18pm, October 25, 2008

Saw V is awesome and just as good as the first four! As I've said, it's another awesome piece to add to Jigsaw's puzzle! I love all the flashback sequences with Hoffman and Jigsaw. Hoffman thinks he's the only one to survive Jigsaw's traps during the time of Saw III and IV, but Strahm makes it out of his trap. The next day, the police hold a memorial service for all the cops who died while trying to capture Jigsaw. Hoffman receives a letter that says "I know who you are." So, he tries to frame Strahm to look like Jigsaw's apprentice. Meanwhile, five people have to play a game and work together in order to survive. Some of the traps were pretty cool. Strahm revisits some of the old Jigsaw traps, like Paul's razor wire trap from the original Saw. Jill receives a box from John/Jigsaw, but we don't get to see what's in it, maybe we'll find out in Saw VI! I love the twist ending! In conclusion, I'm glad Saw V was made and adds more to the story! If you love the Saw series, you'll love SAW V!!!

Believe it or not, many horror movies get good reviews on horror sites, like this one. The problem with this one is that the acting, the writing, the 'twist' (which wasn't much of a twist this time around) and just the overall atmosphere the other Saw films had to offer are gone. THAT is why this is getting bad reviews.

Posted By: Tomoe at 1:16pm, October 25, 2008

Ughhh...

Horror movies will ALWAYS get negative reviews, especially if they are sequels and especially if they are named "SAW"

But SAW V is the strongest installment in the series since the first. Make no mistake.

The writing is taught, the director got great performances out of his actors, and the traps are the most ingenious torture devices in a SAW movie, ever.

The people who said this was bad either say it's bad because A. They don't like SAW; B. They don't like gore; or C. They were in a bad mood when they saw it. Mr. Disgusting seems to fit into category C.

Don't trust the reviews. See SAW V.

Posted By: MrDrew77 at 12:39pm, October 25, 2008

Saw V is filler and back story preparation for Saw VI which will be Hoffman's test. It was good, but not great. I still liked it, but not nearly as much as either III or IV.

Posted By: Triggs_Effect at 12:01pm, October 25, 2008

(part 2 of my review...)

The “unbelievable” ending. Every single Saw movie has ended with the entrapped “player” LIVING!. Now, with the next installment each year, yes they do get killed off between movies but the thing is they don’t actually die in the movie. Dr. Gordon may have cut his foot but he wasn’t dead. Adam may have been locked in the room but he was locked in alive. Saw II, Eric was locked in the same room (where we saw the dead body of Adam who obviously died from being left there) from the previous movie but left alive. Saw III, the husband may have been stuck in the locker or whatever but he was left alive. Saw IV (husband was killed off by Strahm) Strahm was left alive. I even believe Riggs was left alive but must have died from blood loss for Saw V. But Saw V, Strahm is killed off with NO escape. I thought the purpose of the traps is to provide some kind of escape? Ok, so maybe the glass coffin was to be his escape and it was cute that Hoffman figured he’d be the one actually stuck inside but go back to earlier in the movie. Unless I just couldn’t hear too well in the movie, how was Strahm supposed to escape the glass water box? That seemed more of an Amanda trap to me. So yea, very believable ending. Not really a cliff hanger ending as the others to suggest Saw VI. More like parts within Saw V that hint at more answers to be given in Saw VI.

So what’s in it for Saw VI? Hopefully Jill’s mysterious box is explained. Maybe the FBI agent that was Strahm’s superior will play a game. And what’s the deal with the tape Hoffman played at Jigsaw’s autopsy at the end of Saw IV? To me it seemed Hoffman was to be tested once more but Saw V just jumped back to a previous test. And what was in the Amanda envelop in Saw III? Oh well. Like another review I read, this was more a filling in the gap. This could have been a made for TV movie as it was more of a bridge from Saw III and IV to Saw VI.

Now don’t take this as bashing the film. I love the Saw franchise and I enjoyed this movie. I just felt it was lack luster. It just wasn’t having me on the edge of my seat. Each previous installment had something exciting to balance out what it may not have had from its predecessor. This one just had a culmination of just non-thrilling and predictable events. Or maybe I’ve developed a Saw mind frame and can see it before it takes place now, who knows. Love Saw, love the franchise, enjoyed the movie, just disappointed.

Posted By: Triggus at 11:56am, October 25, 2008

Just disappointing…

Ever since I saw the first Saw movie I have been in love. It is the depth and calculation put into the traps to not just trap the “player” but the audience in what we think is happening (while misleading you down different avenues). The greatest feature of the franchise is the way the “twist” is carried. Each movie left you hanging on with the thought “I really would not have thought of it going there”. Think about it. Who saw it coming for Jigsaw to rise from the floor Dr. Gordon and Adam were in on Saw? Who saw it coming that the video feed was not live in Saw II? Who even saw it coming that Saw III and IV were set at the same time? Saw V just didn’t have that edge.

Now, the movie did have interesting points at times. It was cute how they figured one key could have opened all of the neck braces. It was also mildly amusing they figured all five could have acted as conductors to the bathtub (but that really didn’t take that much thought to it). But it was just ignorant that they didn’t try and squeeze more than one person into those chambers to protect themselves from the blast (I mean really, just by looking at them you could tell two people could fit in any one of them). Then all of it comes full circle at the end like a light bulb just shines. “OMG, if we had listened to the not-so vague hint (because it was pretty much to the point with no twist to it) on the tape all five of us would be there to draw a little blood in the final challenge.” So poor. I mean, all the other movies, the tapes tell you something that makes you think the apparent which is not the underlying message. Examples like in Saw III, we were centered around the father’s loss of his child believed his son by death when Jigsaw really meant his daughter. Saw IV where Riggs was given the counter clock which actually was counting down to something good. The tapes in Saw V just weren’t that misleading.

Another thing, what did those five people have to do with anything at all? Every previous Saw movie, the protagonist(s) always had some involvement with the trap/game they were stuck in and the outside story. These five did what, played a role in blowing a building? What did that have to do with Strahm and Hoffman as the leading roles? That also triggers another thought. The leading character in all the Saw movies has been the main TRAP!. Everything and everyone else played as backup. The first Saw was centered around the room with flashbacks and other currents points scattered around. Saw II was centered around the house cutting back and forth to Jigsaw and Eric. Saw III and IV along the same lines. This installment, the main trap was a supporting character to Strahm and Hoffman. So what, we have two stories with no underlying connection? Hopefully that as well as other points will be addressed in Saw VI (I pray for another installment just to fix this mess).

A key point of the previous movies is the construction. I’m very partial to the first. I LOVED how it kept bouncing around giving so much confusion. I liked how it led to you believe Danny Glover’s character was still a cop until you saw that he actually had be released (not explaining further, go watch if you haven’t). The only time Saw V did this was in the beginning with the pendulum trap. Then, unfortunantly, it started playing out like a typical scary movie straight down the line with obvious flashbacks. As one review stated, it was mundane for Strahm to have all those monologues as well as all the flashbacks. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it was nice to see how the traps were setup in the previous movies but it took away a lot of mystery.

Saw V in my opinion was a good scary/horror movie but not up to “Saw” par. It was too direct to the point the audience could figure things out quickly. It was too much explanation and not enough confusion. Pointless pieces such as the FBI agent’s (Strahm’s boss) role. Jigsaw’s ex-wife Jill’s mysterious box that had nothing to do with anything. I can only assume her dialogue with the FBI agent will have some impact in the next but it was a short unfulfilling buildup if so. And the five people going through the Jigsaw trap who seem to have had no link to Jigsaw, Strahm or Hoffman. And as for the ending, “You won’t believe how it ends.” I laugh at that. I saw how it ended, and I believe it. Cute twist but not a complex, edge of you seat type ending. That brings up my final comment...

(to be continued in Part 2 of my review...)

This was so lame!!
they should have stopped at 4.
the only remote thing that was good, was obviously the little taste of gore they gave us!!!

Waste of time and money.......

I too just got back from seeing SAW V . . . I was utterly disappointed. It just did not feel like the part of the SAW franchise we've come to know and love. This film felt like it was thrown together too quickly! I really think that the intent for SAW V was to bridge a gap between IV and VI upon it's release, but honestly, I think they could have accomplished bridging the gap in an montage rather than a slow V movie. Even the contraptions felt weird . . . it just didn't have the visceral atmosphere we've seen in the past. I feel that true fans will be deeply disappointed.

Posted By: slashersadie at 2:41am, October 25, 2008

Just got back from SAW V--full house crowd, all anticipating the gore. It wasn't there.I could have come up with more torture traps than these..too many keys and locks.
All in all, it was okay, more like a bridge to the next one.

What the fuck happened!?

Saw II, III, and IV are three of my all time favorite horror films ever, and this partiuclar installment almost threatens to wreck the entire franchise...

All I have is my memories.

The thing that really puts me off about this film is how the filmakers apparently think we, the audience are stupid!

Maybe I'll come back to it later, rewatch it and give it a slightly better rating... hopefully. But for now, I am so pissed about how quickly the franchise fell from parts IV to V

=/

Posted By: guarino2002 at 1:13am, October 25, 2008

I think the movie tried to hard, there were some good scenes but not enough to hold it together. I feel like they just keep going down hill. I saw the last couple saws in theaters usually opening weekend or midnight screening but I doubt ill be seeing the next one in theaters.

I thought it was amazing,
It did make me want to ask about a million questions but thats what I like cause it really does keep you guessing!

Much Better than 4

Posted By: Sawlover at 10:55pm, October 24, 2008

I thought that the traps were really cool. It was just a filler plot leading up to the 6th one. Everybody asks about Dr.Gordon, but what about Eric Matthews son fom Saw 2. Nothing has ever been mentioned about him. I still love the series. It has at least kept the general population interested in horror. Where I went to watch the movie was packed.

I'm a HUGE Saw fan. I still am after seeing this movie. But I felt it was kind of... uneventful. It was an entertaining horror movie, not necessarily the best Saw movie. It seems like there weren't enough answers. Uncharacteristic to the franchise, I think you could skip this one and keep up. Saw VI has a lot to wrap up considering the amount added, not all of which that interesting. I'm looking forward to it. My expectations of it are a lot higher than they were before because of how much it has to do.
The gore was entertaining, and the last scene (to a wonderfully sick person like me) was kind of like, "heheheh".
Last, like I've said before, "THEY ALL SUCK BUT THE FISRT" isn't a fair review. Please don't confuse it for one, or review here if you haven't seen the movie.

Posted By: nohandtyper at 10:23pm, October 24, 2008

I wont say it's the best, I still think saw 2 is the best, but I really liked this one. I like that they went back to the people having to save themselves instead of relying on other people to save them (saw 3, 4). This was possibly the best part; just moving back to the basic idea behind the series. What I still would like to know is:
1) Why was the guy from the first one still alive?
2) What was in the envelope?
3) Dr. Gordon anyone? I still think he's playing a huge role in all of this.
4) Jill is in this for some bigger reason. WHAT IS IT!? (I realize they partially address this with the box that she gets in 5, but I still want to know).

There are a few more things that I want answered, but again, I have to say I'm happy that it went back to the people having to get themselves out instead of being chained up, held down by the neck, on the rack, bound to a chair by the hair, standing on a block of ice waiting for you head to be crushed. I REALLY like that they went back to the basics.

Spoilers

At first I was angry, after thoroughly enjoying the last four films I felt they blew it on this one, but then I read a few user reviews. If we were to take this as a setup for the last film then they needed IMHO to add these few details to Saw V and then it would have been top notch.

-an explanation of why that guy with the key in his stomach from Part 1 had seemingly no way out

-at least one scene with Amanda

-what was in the envelope, or at least a tease of it being important

-and the ending needed to be the first scene from Saw 4...I have a feeling that will be the open to Saw 6 that the autopsy happens after Saw V and that Hoffman is thrown a curveball. Had they closed with that cliffhanger I think some people would be less p'od.

I liked Hoffman more than I thought I would and felt Agent Strahm was a cool character up until he basically walks the same path Rigg did but knowingly, I mean really, shouldn't he know better by now. Jigsaw was amazing every time he was on screen, Tobin really disappears into that role and I dug how we saw Jiggy at various points and conditions. The traps were fun if a little too fast, something about the pacing of the flick was off. I loved all the inside baseball bits but wish there'd been more of it.

Maybe I'll feel better after another viewing but if this was just a big setup for the climax then the ending needed more bang

Posted By: bangor09 at 9:53pm, October 24, 2008

The problem with the franchise is simple, it's all been done, and it actually repeats the "3.5" factor, not to mention it has tons of flashbacks, ala 4, but to me it DID made sense, and filled a lot of plot holes, and of course left new ones, I'm sure this movie takes place before the autopsy on 4,(and don't complaint about spoilers, if you're a fan of the series you knew it already, if you aren't a fan, why bother to read this?)and yes, it sets yet again, for a sequel, I'd say you will have to see the series as a whole (like a miniseries if you will) to make a far better judgement, (if you want to)and would be logical, if not for the fact, that they are scripted one by one, and not as a whole story, unfortunately, we are to expect another year to see how this unfolds, of course if youre not in the series, then just don't bother...

Posted By: ODRiley at 9:16pm, October 24, 2008

I liked it. As much as i liked the other sequels anyways. Its on par with those and I probably liked this a little more than Saw 4. You prety much know what your getting now with each sequel but i find it entertaining.

Posted By: frazzle_f at 7:14pm, October 24, 2008

Wow, why all the hating? Surely people know what to expect when they go see these movies by now. If you didnt like the others you obviously not gonna like this one and those who didnt liek this one I cant really see why... I for one didnt think it was great but definetly much better than 4 and still well worth a watch. Just dont understand the negativity surronding it...

Posted By: dtcarefree at 7:09pm, October 24, 2008

"Also it's like they completely ignored the big setup at the end of IV. Hoffman doesn't seem too worried about the fact that Jigsaw left him a tape saying he was going to be tested. He just seemed to go about his business as usual."

I don't think that this si the case, as I reckon SAW V occurs before the autopsy.

Anyhow, thought the movie was very good. SOme of the acting in the traps was atrocious, but it was nice to return to a SAW I-esqe story of detective work. Tight direction and a tight script.

It moves the story forward, but also holds it back... guess we will have to wait till Saw VI to find out what Hoffman's final test is as described on the autopsy tape =D

Posted By: Darkstorn at 6:33pm, October 24, 2008

The weakest in the series. The franchise has officially 'gotten stale.'

Posted By: flesheater123 at 5:48pm, October 24, 2008

I thought it was awesome, yes I was confused through parts of the story but like I tell everybody I know and meet, I don't watch a movie for a story or plot, if i want that I will pick up a novel and read.

Now I go into all saw's expecting blood, hyper editing, and this did it for me. Fuck yeah it was confusing as fuck, but they will all meet that in six sucks we gotta wait a year. But hey at least they told us about things in this I never knew. LOL I think they make the story's up right before they release it. But hey I will always be a true fan through bad and good.

Posted By: Urdeadlyfriend at 5:32pm, October 24, 2008

Not a huge Saw fan, but I really enjoyed it. Way better than the lame IV.

Posted By: MR VOORHEES at 5:21pm, October 24, 2008

"You wont beleive how this ends"
Bloody right,in fact i cant belive how it start, middle or ends. All terribly
A collection of deleted back story and traps from the saw 4 dvd at best.
Took the franchise nowhere.
AVOID

Posted By: MetalMachine489 at 1:35pm, October 24, 2008

Not bad at all for being a setup piece into six. I'm giving it 8/10 on the faith that six is going to rock my fucking socks off and make five totally worthwhile.

Also, I feel the need to mention how ripped off I feel that the Friday the 13th trailer DID NOT play at the beginning of the movie. Retardation at it's finest.

I still want to know what happened to Dr. Gordon, dammit.

Posted By: FTW666 at 12:54pm, October 24, 2008

i jus got back from the movie...not gonna give anything away...the traps were awesome...plot was aight...i jus wanna know what was in the box. iam giving this a 6

Aaah the Saw series. Torture porn seems to be the sub-genre du jour in horror in the 2000's ala the slasher film of the 80's and the too-hip to be scared Scream horror of the 90's. I guess this series deserves some credit for, along with Hostel, creating this little niche in horror. Unfortunately, the formula grew stale about four years ago and this attempt to inject new life into the dying series while at times is inventive in its kills and traps, stumbles when it comes to the most important thing we need to care about anything that is occurring onscreen: a plot.
The movie follows the detective, Strahm, who survived the end of the 4th film in the warehouse. He grows suspicious of his colleague, Hoffman, who seems to have gotten out of the mayhem without a scratch on him. Here is where the problems begin, the movie has a plot which I would say should only take up about 20 minutes, however the geniuses behind this film decided they could stretch the plot to 90 minutes by inserting an overabundance of flashbacks from the previous films. I have a personal rule against flashbacks as a cheap device to add more running time to what is essentially a plot-less film. Sometimes a movie can overcome it if you actually give a damn about the characters going through the memory recall ordeal, and sadly the actors of Saw V bumble the ball here as well. The guy who plays Strahm has from what I can tell two emotions, pissed off by itself and pissed off while being confused. This was okay the first four times but by the 35th reaction shot of this idiot looking pissed off/confused it had me checking my watch. Luckily the movie has a much more engaging is derivative sub-plot going with five people trapped in one of Jigsaw's/Hoffman's torture chambers. The kills and the back story here are actually rather engrossing and the actor's do an effective part at playing their stereotypical roles. As you can guess, Jigsaw would show up somewhere in this movie and he does, in the aforementioned flashbacks and some new footage where he's passing his legacy onto Hoffman. The movie also has a large leap in logic where we are supposed to believe that Hoffman had been working with the detectives all along and is listed on the reports but we haven't seen him until the 4th film. Hm, okay I'll buy that. I guess? All in all this movie does little to give me hope for the future of this franchise. Oh yes there is a future, a sixth and seventh movie have already been green-lit. Thank god it's Halloween, time for another Saw! Final verdict: 1.5/5

I thought SAW V it's losting the essence of the first movies from the serie, as Matrix do with Revolutions and Reloaded.
They are walking in circles with the story and loosing themselve in a lot of non sense things, putting characters that shouldn't be there, making the movie boring and homely, too different of the fisrt SAW.
Maybe less deaths and more context for the next SAW can lift the curiosity of horror movies fans.
We, the fans, used to hate sequels, because the harm that they do to the movie; so, it's better they think more on the fans and less on the money...

To think they are making number six as we speak ...

OH DEAR :(

Should have stopped after the second one!

Posted By: dr gordon at 6:00am, October 24, 2008

No way was this film the most gorey of the series. The autopsy scene in 4 is by far more bloody then anything in 5.

i didnt hate the film but it was very anti climax for me. It was great either, it was pretty much what i was expecting.

It didnt answer anything and asked more questions...

despite what the tagline said...the ending was very believable. and wasnt very surprising at all.

Posted By: jigsaw_fan87 at 4:28am, October 24, 2008

Okay, so I just checked out the midnight showing of Saw V and I'm just going to say it bluntly; this movie SUCKS!!!!!

After Saw IV I felt slightly cheated but left thinking that it was a setup for Saw V so I was willing to give it a pass. So after seeing this piece of junk do i fill cheated? No. I feel completely ripped off!!!!

This movie was again just another set up for the next installment. Without going into much detail, nothing fucking happened in this movie!!! Okay so there's a bunch of annoying characters wandering through a set of traps and each one dies one by one. Seen it! There's also an incredibly lame detective story going on with Scott Patterson trying to prove Hoffman is behind the murders. Not interesting!!

Also it's like they completely ignored the big setup at the end of IV. Hoffman doesn't seem too worried about the fact that Jigsaw left him a tape saying he was going to be tested. He just seemed to go about his business as usual. And the way they tied up what happened in III/IV was pretty boring. The twists, which pretty much make the Saw movies, are lame as lame can be. Now I don't make it a point to try and find the twists in these movies. I just sit back and enjoy the ride. But in this when the twists are revealed I was saying "okay but?". They were so meaningless and I didn't really care.

Words cannot describe how much I loathed this movie and I have to feel bad for David Hackl. I think his directing was fine. I feel the problem was with the script. Now I love Feast and thought Feast II was okay. But I would not say that they are anywhere near the sophistication level of the Saw films. Maybe the Feast boys just aren't up to making a smart, sophisticated story the way Leigh Whannell did (and if you listen to the Saw IV commentary it seems that the Feast boys weren't even responsible for the concurrent story line but actually Whannell).

So will I see Saw VI? Of course. But I think it will take a year to get the bad taste out of my mouth from this one. I love these movies, even with their flaws. But I am completely pissed off that they wasted another movie just setting up for the next one. Just give us the story you wanted to make!! And for goodness sakes. Tell us what was in the freakin' letter!!!

Anyways, until next time...

Oh, and for the record. I did believed how it ended. I just didn't care.

Posted By: deathtiger at 4:21am, October 24, 2008

Meh, been there done that, Saw V tries too hard to be clever, failing to provide what made the series fun....decent twists and turns, instead we are treated to watered down drama that could be on Spike TV.

Posted By: PoisonKeyblade at 3:50am, October 24, 2008

Saw V is clever. It knows what the audience wants, and after four solid films, it still continues to fill in the cracks of minor plot inconsistencies and even manages to link itself all the way back to the first movie. The genius of these films is finding out more about the past that directly links to the events in the future. In this respect, Saw V may just be the best film in the whole series, utilizing plenty of flashbacks, insane traps, and a plethora of returning characters. The fifth film stars series regulars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, and Scott Patterson, as well as newbies Julie Benz, Meagan Good, and Greg Bryk. David Hackl, who served as production designer on Saw II through Saw IV, now takes over the director’s chair for Darren Lynn Bousman.

This time around, Hoffman, Jigsaw’s last remaining apprentice, is trying to tie up all the loose ends, following instructions Jigsaw gave him on his deathbed. Agent Peter Straum is quickly piecing together clues and suspects Hoffman as being tied to Jigsaw. At the same time, five people, Brit, Luba, Mallick, Ashley, and Charles, wake up in a trap and must work together to reach the end. It all builds up to an astounding conclusion that sets the scene for Saw VI in a fantastic fashion.

As always, one of the most enthralling things about the Saw films are the traps, and this one doesn’t disappoint at all. It doesn’t go too over-the-top with the gore, and yet stays intense and absolutely enthralling the entire time. We get explosions aplenty, a water tank, a falling pendulum, a trap involving electrocution, and several others. There is a particular one involving a glass box that was especially disturbing and crazy.

The acting in this installment is on-par with Saw II, which is actually saying a lot. It seems as if in all of the films, there is always a weak spot except for Saw II, and now this one (Cary Elwes in Saw, Bahar Soomekh in Saw III, and Justin Louis in Saw IV). Julie Benz is an effective heroine, one that is fun to root for throughout the course of the movie. Likeable characters abound, with few even approaching annoyingness. Scott Patterson was great to watch in his race to piece things together. Costas Mandylor shines in his scenes, and takes over Jigsaw’s reign quite well. Tobin Bell is in a league all his own, and in all of the flashback scenes (and there’s plenty of ‘em), he comes nothing short of an absolute pro. After five films, he has 100% nailed the Jigsaw character.

In terms of directing, David Hackl does an excellent job taking over for Darren Lynn Bousman. There is lots of flashy editing and awesome camera angles, and the constant close-up shots that fans of the series have come to love. Hackl’s visual style is very similar to that of Bousman’s, and that’s saying something. Both directors bring an incredible amount of creativity to the screen, and Hackl sprinkles a little flavoring all his own that makes this new Saw flick a feast for the eyes. There’s no arguing that’s it’s well-made, in terms of both acting and directing.

The latter half of the movie is super intense, and although the runtime is very short, the length is perfect. It lays out the carpet for the next film in the series with amazing bravado, perfected after five films. It seems like they finally know how to leave us with a cliffhanger at the conclusion. As promised, the ending is stunning and shocking, but don’t expect it to be on caliber with the first movie, an ending which will be hard to ever top. Even after five films, Saw has not grown stale, and continues to enthrall and thrill fans of the series. It is probably the best movie series ever in terms of continuity. As much as I thought I knew what was coming, the fifth entry in the Saw series threw out shock after shock and never ceased to surprise me. Once the credits start, you are left craving more, which will make the next and final entry in the Saw series one that this particular fan will very much be looking forward to.

This movie was terrible. A big let down. No structure, no suspense, could care less about the characters and the direction of the film was mediocre. This makes Saw 4 look like a masterpiece. This was just a piece...of shit.

This movie was blah at best. I love the series but this one tried too hard to squeeze plot points into the previous movies, and it just didn't work. And as jf1881 said, there was no twist ending. You can see the ending coming a mile away. The only thing this movie clears up (in a very boring way) is what happens to the survivor and his daughter from the end of part 3. For die hard fans of the series, go see it, otherwise wait for it on DVD and rent it. The gore and blood were minimal compared to what I was expecting, some of the acting was horrible, but some of the traps were really cool. This entry into the series seem a bit sloppy and rushed.

I didnt think this movie was great at all. There werent many holes filled and it left more for saw VI. The movie was too predictable and there wasnt the classic "twist" at the end.

SAW 5 is awesome. David Hackl did a very good job as a director. I was happy to see Julie Benz in this movie. She is very talented actress. I am wondering what "holes" they are going to fill in SAW 6.
