Thanks to Mosaic Movies for giving me a sample copy to review.
The story begins with Lisa (Spencer-Nairn) and Max (Thompson) moving into a new house. Fast forward three years and Max is in a wheelchair thanks to a motorbike accident and their relationship is rocky so Lisa seeks comfort from the lawyer Steven Verdel (Trucco) who is handling their case. After giving Lisa a box which contains the opal which the Djinn is in she then drops it and the Djinn is in our world and possesses the body of Verdel. The Djinn gets his first two wishes easily but when Lisa says 'I wish I could love the real you' it's a wish the Djinn finds hard to grant even though he's under pressure from three half-formed Djinns to put hell on earth. Enter Hunter (Webster) who tries to kill Lisa's before the wish is granted. Will Lisa save the world or live with the Djinn? This film fixes a lot of problems that were in the previous films. First off it changes the way of the wish granting to a point. Instead of forcing Lisa to wish by killing people, he grants wishes such as money or getting her boyfriend to walk again so thus she doesn't know what his real agenda is and she doesn't get visions of other people's wishes like in the previous films. There aren't as many gory wishes on other people, though saying that a man cutting his nose off is enough to satisfy any gore hound. The Djinn is more human seeing him getting the shit kicked out of him is brilliant and this time he gets laid. Michael Trucco as the Djinn makes the part his own, he's charming, humorous and pure evil all at once, at no stage was I thinking 'I wish Andrew Divoff was in this'. The humor is cheesy at times but it worked.
Director Chris Angel moves the film quickly and the first half-hour is a blast but the film has a few problems. The last quarter of the film seemed rushed due to the budget, it focused too much on the Lisa and Max relationship and some of the wishes weren't carried out to their full potential (killer sex wish) the Djinn looked stupid in daylight and some of the special effects (the fire) looked cheap and there wasn't enough of Hunter in the film. Saying that it was one of the best horror movies I've seen this year so far. It had everything a horror film needs: decent storyline, gore, good acting by all and lots of nudity, even from the main characters. If you hate the Wishmaster series or just hate a movie with the number 4 after the title, this might change your mind. It's hard to compare it to 1,2 and 3 because it is different in parts and is defiantly a standalone film in the series. It breathed much needed new life into the series and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Wishmaster 5 made in the next few years.
Score: 8 / 10
