Bad dialogue
No suspense
No originality
No impressive kills & gore

A waste of time.

Bad movie

good but not great, but it's fun that Norway started making horror, even "De dødes tjern" was the first norwegian korror flick.

A well made slasher film.

One hell of a slasher!

Very stylish and sometimes very creepy, Cold prey is definitely a slasher to check out.

One of my alltime favorites. I can watch this over and over again and never grow bored of it. Definitely worth your time to sit down and watch. It had me screaming for Jannicke's safety the entire time. Her character is suberb.

An fantastic slasher movie! It has the scares, suspense, decent acting and a creepy story about how the killer became who he is. I thought the first killing was pretty bloody, but the rest was pretty dry for a slasher, but it doesn't ruin the experience of the movie at all for me, it makes up for that believe me! It had the perfect, creepy atmosphere that gave me the chills, and a edge of your seat ending. Can't wait for the sequel! A MUST SEE!!!

Fun movie to watch..Had some great jumps and some suspense I enjoyed it a lot.

Posted By: jhanes76 at 9:18pm, August 2, 2009

I kind of liked this one. It had some very tense moments in it. It felt original and not a rehash of teen slashings. I recommend it to anyone... Pop it in and enjoy...

good but not great

I've read many good reviews of this film so I blind bought it. Needless to say I don't mind having it in my collection but it wasn't suspenseful, kills weren't impressive, killer was kinda lame, but despite all of these terrible things...it wasn't bad. That's not to say it was good...just not bad.

Great slasher done right - Unforgiving environment - care for the main characters achieved - Would recommend to any genre fan

btw, sequel is great continuation of story

Very good homage to old school slasher movies and because the comment section is not open for part 2 yet, it was great as well.

Posted By: zap451 at 8:48am, April 24, 2009

The atmosphere and environment were creepy. Good character development with even likable characters.
Wasn't impressed with the killer or story behind him, but would recommend this one.

I was impressed with this norweign slasher film. It was not gory or overly bloody but it had intensity. I look forward to watching more of Roar's films in the future.

Was not the best foreign horror ever but close. I liked how it payed a sort of homage to older slashers. Big dude stalking teens. The twist was stupid in my opinion, i didnt really care bout ole boy in the first place. Not really any scares but it was just intense and made u wanting more. I wanna see the sequel, is it good??

Cold Prey is, so far, the best foreign horror film I have seen this year. Sure, it doesn't bring anything new to the table, but people need a film like that every now and then. This movie is intense and is paced well. The kills in this film are nowhere near original, but the film makes up for that with how they set up the kill with the intensity and how they pace it. It is also very suspenseful, which is backed by their original score. The score reminded me of some of the classic slasher films like Halloween and Friday the 13th, films that contain two of the best scores that I have seen in any horror film. The acting is great, the dialogue is good, everyone is a believable character, what is there to not like about this film? It's damn near perfect! And I love the twist at the end! I totally was not expecting the killer to be the boy from the beginning and that his parents were the ones trying to get rid of him. Now, it is not a perfect movie because we have seen films like this before. But who really cares? This a film that is meant to be enjoyed, not to be tossed aside because it is not original. In fact, I think that is what makes it great. The only complaint that I have is with this movie comes in the form of a question: why did it take three years for a movie this awesome to reach the U.S.? But now that I have seen the film, I don't care about that anymore. If you are a fan of the classic slasher films, see this film. You will definitely get a kick out of it!

its a great slasher. it takes homage to the great late '70s- early '80s horror flicks like friday the 13th, halloween, black Christmas, etc. YEA its not original but i dont think that it was ment to be. there was a good amount of suspense, not alot of gore, good character development and a good throw back to the old fashion slashers. also, the killer was hidden from sight until the last third of the movie and the killers motives werent explained. the things they needed to work on where the suspense, and the kills. the kills werent elaborate enough. other than thoughs things the movie was decent.

Posted By: randomrick at 7:45pm, March 13, 2009

nothing origional here.

movies like this make me kinda proud to be Norwegian :D the movie is very good, not the best, but still very good.

I can agree with the average rating on this one. It wasn't bad at all. Definitely not great. I called the ending halfway through the movie, so the ending was kind of a letdown for me. still pretty fun to watch. 7/10

Posted By: dabulk2 at 12:37am, February 17, 2009

Very enjoyable. Good acting, thought didn't think the killer was very good at killing despite the first kill. Overall, a good movie though.

Though Nowegian, Cold Prey borrows a lot from American horror films. You've seen a bunch of movies like this before, but it doesn't give you what you expect. This isn't to say that it gives you something unsuspecting. We are used to the close shot with the persons face and an open door, but when the door closes the killer destroys. This didn't happen once, and the situation arose a few times. This is what made me like Cold Prey. We are so used to the killer behind the door that we can smell it, and brace ourselves for it. Do we really need more predictable horror? So we have a typical slasher here without attempts at cheap scares while taking away our conditioning of when a killing is going to happen.

The slice of America that is missing is teen sex, nudity, and tight shirts with bouncers. I am actually very happy that it did not involve any of that for the reason that it distracts you from the fear, tension, and story of a movie. Who can actually feel fear tension when they are busy focusing on sexual tension? This absence makes Cold Prey above American slashers.

It's a fun movie that you really don't care about, but will keep you entertained along the way. Will you ever watch it again? Maybe once, but probably not. You'll probably rewind the unintentional humor in the scene with the saw though. This is a solid 7 I think.

Pretty good movie that keeps the tension throughout.

I disagree with this review almost completely, although the cinematography was exceptional at times. The acting was better than your average slasher, but I didn't feel the least bit convinced that any of the kids had a chance to escape nor wanted to. Just because it's a slasher movie doesn't mean that the characters have to have no common sense. For once I'd like to see a character in a slasher film, make a smart decision, even if it ends up killing them or someone else. Just some semblance of intelligence would be nice for once. This film was by the numbers slasher drivel in my opinion. When Ingrid (?) was on the stairs and the camera switched from filming behind her to looking directly at her, I was hoping that the pick axe was going to get driven through the back of her head out her mouth with a load of splatter. Of course this didn't happen, but that would have given this film something of substance. I just found myself saying "Come on, do such and such" to no avail. I hate when a movie ends and you say to your friends, "If I was involved with this script, this could have been sick." I recommend skipping this movie altogether. If you're looking for great cinematography just watch Planet Earth. You can watch that for free and I'd argue that there's more violence in that as well.

Like so many other people have said... it IS more or less your generic slasher with almost no story and it doesn't bring anything new to the genre. However, it is very well paced, has some beautiful cinematography, some very intense moments and... get ready for it... the actors are actually good! Yep, I said it. Also, the characters are not your typical bunch of teenagers that make me wish they would die in the first ten minutes so I didn't have to hear them talk any more. They were well written and I actually wanted them to survive. A very good slasher flick!

Oh, and the sequel is coming!

Posted By: flesheater123 at 12:32am, January 31, 2009

DOn't listen to any of these reviews at all. I don't know were they watching the same flick as I was. Because what I saw was a shot by genteric account of what every slasher film is.

It held my interest slightly. The ending was a huge oh shit, then I was like that was it. LAME. The deaths were okay, but this flick didn't rely on that. It relied on depth which it did not have.

I rather stick to jasons, my bloody valentine, and such. This movie just didn't do shit for me. Expect bore me to tears. So if you wanta watch it go ahead. I am just stating what I think.

Cold Prey is the best Slasher film released on DVD in the States of 2009. I love the scenery, the cinemtropgraphy, the mysterious killer, nice character development, very stunning film. I can't wait to see the sequel in English Subs or Dubbing. The bad part about Cold Prey's U.S. version is the bad English Dubbing.

Posted By: Protecious at 6:25pm, January 28, 2009

A formula all too familiar, a better than average result.
I felt the characters were pretty good and interesting to listen to.
this is yet another hidden masked killer film, i enjoyed the setting in the cold and snow, but an overused formula with a pretty typical killer.
it did have some good style and overall look to the film.

Fritt Vilt succeeds were most modern slashers fall flat on there face in that it was pragmatic. There was no ridiculous unstoppable antagonist or lewd teen inanity that usually drags a slasher down. Instead Fritt Vilt focuses on some amazing camera work, solid dialogue and superior moments of tension. There are many nods to more famous horror movies but it never feels like your watching a carbon copy.
If you enjoy mindless slashers you should probably stay clear. I highly recommend this film to anyone with an appreciation for horror cinema as an art form.

hoo wee. Wow, this was one terrible film - one that I'd say was on the level of a student film exercise in "slasher" films. Although there was NO slashing, just poking with the same ice tool. I lost count of how many foreshadowing elements were used throughout the film with the "climactic" ending revealed pretty much within the first few minutes of the film. No tension, pretty terrible acting and, yes, flickering lights. Can't have a slasher film without flickering lights. Or blood, which this film lacks in spades. Skip it and save yourself that hour and half.

were we watching the same film people

Piece of shit....

i wsant sure what to expect since the trailer made it seem like your typical teen slasher except with snowboarders. Apparently its gotten a lot of good reviews. I can see why. Its an extremely well made slasher and its surprisingly very classy. The killer has a great presence and the kills are brutal and upsetting since you actually like all of the characters. Another one worth checking out.

Posted By: Inside-Out at 1:27pm, January 22, 2009

I really enjoyed this movie. It had a great isolated setting. Add this with Rovdyr and Let the Right One In and France may have an upcomming rival for the best horror films in quite some time.

What exactly can I say about "COLD PREY" that hasn't been said already. Well lets start here... In a world overdosed on allegedly scary slasher movies this Norwegian film truly harks back to the darkest roots of the genre and delivers a film that manages to maintain a terrifying atmosphere with genuine suspense.
It's an old and tried storyline: Its set-up is nothing new. A terrified young boy with a distinct facial birthmark is chased through a landscape of snow and ice by an anonymous presence and subsequently falls into a chasm where we presume he is buried alive by his pursuer.
We then meet his worried parents explaining to officials that he went out to play and hasn’t been seen since. We can tell it’s mid 1970’s by the clothing they wear.

Flash forward to the present-day. It is winter. Lakes are frozen over and trees are white with snow. Five youthful friends travel by RV through the Jotunheimen mountainous range of southern Norway in pursuit of the ultimate rush. Snowboarding down the perilous slopes.

In what appears to be routine characters of almost every horror film we are introduced to the masculine Eirik, who emits a subtle sense of leadership. His instantly warm and likeable girlfriend Jannicke. The self-assured jock Mikal with his giggling, not so confident girlfriend Ingunn and the unattached Morten Tobias who is obviously the comedian of the group.

After a challenging climb to the crest of a Jotunheimen hill an incident leaves one of them severely disabled. Isolated with no cell phone service and too far from their RV to carry the injured back they spot a secluded hotel in the nearby valley where they seek help for their friend.

They find the hotel abandoned, the phone lines dead and no electricity but they quickly utilise the resources available to them and find temporary relief for the wounded with pills, alcohol and superglue!
Darkness quickly falls outside, accompanied by a terrible blizzard and with a nice fire burning and free alcohol at their disposal they figure the best option is to stay overnight.
After exploring the hotels many vast hallways and eerie corridors they find a working generator which restores power to the entire building so they settle down for a restful night with a plan that Eirik will return to the RV and locate help first thing in the morning.
However, from the hotels darkest shadows someone has been watching them and the night becomes a flat out battle for survival when a cunning psychopath ravages their sanctuary and violently slaughters them one by one.
What differentiates "Cold Prey" from the rest of the pack is it's sharp direction by Roar Uthaug who manages to keep the same old clichés of the genre interesting. He does this mainly through the characters. Here we have five close friends who emote a sincere fondness for each other and for this reason alone we grow to like them. Unlike most other slasher movies where the majority of characters are simply used as a tool to increase the body-count and showcase gory effects these characters propel the story along and all have a purpose within the movie that serves the plot very well. As a result when we watch them die it becomes upsetting and genuinely disturbing. In particular the first murder is increasingly harrowing and while watching it I felt an overwhelming pity for the person involved.
Another reason it succeeds is the fluid cinematography by Daniel Voldheim who paints each shot with atmospheric lighting and shadow so the darker scenes generate true claustrophobia and tension. The soundtrack by Magnus Beite is wonderfully haunting, moving and terrifying while the performances by all involved are incredibly accurate, particularly Ingrid Bolso Berdal as Jannicke who provides a compassionate heroine whom we quickly grow to love and in the climax we truly feel her anguish and pain.
This is an outstanding movie within the slasher genre and a sterling example of Norwegian horror. In the tradition of the original "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th", "Cold Prey" is destined to become a classic.
