This was like a cross between the movies Wind Chill and Dead End but not nearly as satisfying as both or as well acted though Rachel Miner was an exception and was the most believable. I thought it had a pretty solid beginning introducing us to Penny and how she got the phobia of cars and accidents and things get pretty creepy from here on as Penny finds herself trapped in a car with a deranged killer lurking outside. I thought the killer was very creepy looking and the atmosphere very spooky but I just don't think that the execution was well played out at all and the ending was just way too abrupt, they could of done a way better job with it because they had a great premise but just didn't do anything intriguing with it. They took way too much time with her trapped in the car and eventually it became dull after awhile and it dragged the movie's pace and it needed more action. Overall it wasn't dreadfull but not worth your penny either, I'd say skip it!
i liked it....had a good story line and very good acting....but the downfal, like most horrorfest movies, is that it doesnt have that extra nudge in and of itself to be that good of a movie....
Better than half the first 8 Horrorfest films which, as one would discern, leaves it smack dab in the middle; yeah, just plain mediocre.
The killer was unveiled to be pretty creepy by the end, but they story up to that point was just kinda meh. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the "simple premise" horror movie, but this movie just didn't instill any sense of terror or fear in me what-so-ever. I just wanted to find out if the chick got out of the freaking car.
Michael Berryman and Mickey Jones deserved better cameos, btw.
Not that good at all. Your average slasher film by all means. Im sorry but the main girl of the film was so fucking stupid I wished she would have died. Horrible actors.
This was actualyl a cool low budget horror. So what if the acting wasn't good. The Friday the 13th series didn't exactly have amazing performances. The long drawn out scenes, I've seen worse, White Noise anyone? All in all this is my favorite horrorfest movie of the first set. Watch it.
I’ve always believed that even the worst films have a few good aspects. A silver lining if you will. Penny Dreadful was pretty dreadful. I’m not here to rag on this picture however.
Penney Dreadful I think was on the right track to something very cool but got stuck in the process. This flick had some really great moments but I found that many of the very good aspects were stretched far apart. Penny Dreadful as a short film would be a great piece. I feel there is a lot of down time were the movie just focuses on a gal balling her eyes out. By the end of the movie you’re so tired of hearing the main character sob you want to crank up the stereo and cause permanent hearing damage.
The film was very predictable as well. I’ve seen many different horror and thriller films so I notice things rather quickly so that opinion will vary from person to person. My brother watched this flick with me and he doesn’t watch many films as is and he saw things coming if that gives you a feel for the flow.
In the defense of director Richard Brandes it had to have been difficult to keep a film moving with the setting mainly in a small car. He had many great ideas that could have been amplified with different approaches to certain gags or possible re-writes.
All and all I think the plot of Penny Dreadful was great but the gags were stale. If the action of the film had been more original things would have worked out better. For an example there’s only so many times you can watch someone run away from a critter, see them trip, and get a reaction from the audience.
It was good and bad, I did like the story about the young girl being stuck in a car with no escape, she suffers from paranoia of being trapped in a car after her parents die in an accident. Most of the movie revolves around the girl stuck in a car wedged between 4 trees with a killer on the loose hunting her down. The end def could have been better.
Key word here being "dreadful". This had to be one of the most boring horror films I've ever seen! The majority of the film has Penny hyperventilating in a car, oooh scary. The rest of the film is a cat and mouse game with a killer hitch hiker that comes few and far between. In the beginning when they pick up the stranger and at one point he offer the two in the front seat a skewer of raw meat, I was like, “oh my god, this is pathetic!”
I thought the movie was about 75% good and 25 slow. It had several good kiling scenes along with cmon lets get on with it . Penny trapped in the car was cool for a while but it got old. Definitely worth watching. Maybe the ending will get better when you watch it. Not
I thought it was great. Especially for a low-budget film. The pacing was a little off at times, and Rachel Minor overacted a little, but the end result was very good, and the ending freaked me out. Creepy, creepy killer.
I really liked the idea of this film, which even had Michael Berryman in it. I thought it was a little busy for such a remote place but than you need a body count, right? Getting Mimi Rogers to play a corpse through most of the film was fun to see too. Parts draged and I thought the ending was sort of cheating ending the film like that. Any way worth a look.
