Loved this movie, one of my favorites. I want to see the gorier cut, because there isn't enough feasting, but other than a lack of feasting everything else is done great. An even more asshole Cooper, a more agitated Ben, an awesome cameo from Bill Mosley.
What I really liked was the zombies makeup in this. Like I said, not enough blood and guts, but the zombies look very creepy and unsettling. The one that breaks Johnny's neck? The big fat one that almost falls right on top of Barbra? The one that loses its clothing and has a fucked up bag with a ton of stitches and shit?
Someone else mentioned a gorier, extended cut...I want to see that version. If this was gorier and extended I might even prefer it to the original.
I think this was a great remake of Romero's classic. And who better to make it than Tom Savini, it stayed true to the original which I love. It might not be everybodys cup of tea, but its defintely a formidable remake imo.
I know that this is probably in some way blasphemous to admit to watching this remake of George Romero's zombie classic. And even more so when I admit to thoroughly enjoying it. FX master Tom Savini takes on the directing duty, so I was expecting some nice gore set pieces. But the gore is very tame by Savini standards. The film basically retells the original up until the third act. Barbara is turned into an ass-kicking heroine, Rather than the original nervous little madam. The ending is dramatically changed but is still shocking none the less. What also really sells this is the amazing cast. Tony Todd, Tom Towles, Patricia Tallman And the fantastic Bill Moseley as Johnnie. "They're coming to get you Barbara. They're horny Barbara." If you enjoyed the original I think you enjoy this. Give it a go.
Color remake of the Original Romero Classic. This film is great, and sticks very much with the original story line. Not to mention in a day and age ( STILL) where American's tend to be anti Black and anti Woman, its nice to see a film where both of these "minority" figures are used as the Hero's/Protagonist. I wouldn't have had this remake done any other way, especially since Savini isn't some no name push-over trying to cash in on Romero's classic. Savini and Romero have always been close and I think this is why the remake succeeded so well. The atmostphere of the Original was kept in tact as well as great performances by all the actors. Highly reccomended!
I thought it was too tame.
The original was creepier, gorier and more realistic.
Everything seems "filmed and acted".
When Barbara started to run from the zombie at the very beginning and suddenly the credits came on right in the middle of the scene, I knew we were in the hands of an amateur director.
When the thin, unclothed zombie appeared at the window and did his "monster pose" I knew it was hopeless.
The child zombie was very well done, but we don't even see her kill her mother.
Another scene that I like was when Barbara Tallman is outside, looks up and goes "Oh, God!"
Her delivery of that line is deeply moving.
Still...I never shook the feeling that "I was watching a movie".
The original was just grittier.
Now, where do I get the gorier version?
I loved it! I've had the dvd for years. There aren't many actors out there who can play an over-the-top a$$h0!! like Tom Towles. And I especially liked Bill Moseley as "Johnny". Rumor has it there is a much longer and gorier cut, but it's only available as a bootleg. Every movie (horror especially) is being remastered and repackaged and double/triple-dipped..even Pumpkinhead has at long last been given the proper treatment. I say it is definitely time for the NOTLD remake!
I was 15 when I saw this flick. Loved it!!! Tremendous job by Tom Savini. Tony Todd was great!!! Patricia Tallman was HOT!!! The atmosphere & overall look of the film was excellent. If only ALL the remakes could be done as well as this one. Savini did a masterful job of keeping the spirit of the original alive, while adding some personal touches of his own. Great popcorn flick!!! It was definitely a regular in the horror movie stack on those good ol weekends during the highschool years. Parents out of town, a few friends over, throw in some cold beers & a stack of pizzas & you've got yourself a hell of a horror weekend!!! Ah, the good ol days. A pause while I wipe away a tear!!! Damn, I miss those times...don't you?
I like this movie a little more every time i see it. Honestly i hated it the first time i saw it, but its really grown on me over time. Love the effects, Tony Todd, the directing by Savini is spot on, my only beef with this movie is some flat acting and lines that fall on their face, the guy that plays cooper kind of sucks, as does the lady that plays Judy, she just screams the whole movie and it gets annoying. Other than that, i love this movie.
I can't say it's better than the original, the effects are brilliant[Savini!Duh!]and the retooling of the dialogue is well done. The only problem I have with this version is the ending. As nihilistic as the originals is,I still think it suits the story and adds to the social commentary better.Still, all in all,one of the best and most faithful remakes I've ever seen.If you like human flesh, you owe it to yourself to see this one...Twice!
Savini did a terrific job with this film. It's too bad he hasn't done more in the way of directing.

not the best of the dead movies, but still decent (as long as we're talking about the uncut edition and not the first version i saw that left out that amazing head blown up by the shotgun).

This is by far one of, if not the best remake. I know its real close to the orginal but im sorry tony todd is WAY better than the orginal black guy. more energy more ACTING. And the overall suspense on this movie was awesome. Now i liked the remake for dawn of the dead, but it was kinda weird to see rotting corpses' running? I think you can make zombies more terrifying when there just slowly walking towards the actors. Sure you could out run them, but your more likely not to hear them when you turn the cornor and run into one waiting behind a wall or like in this film when barbra takes shelter in the house and that 300 pounder is just right behind her. Either way awesome movie worth checking out if you havent seen it or if you have only seen the orginal.
"George A. Romero turns over his classic horror film to be remade, and it's in the hands of Tom Savini (who did brilliant makeup for Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead). Now, I do have some mixed feelings about this movie. While in some aspects it's well made (er, for a remake), it can not match the original, if only in tone and style. But it also doesn't match up with the original because until the end, most of the movie is a shot for shot remake. More style is added, to be sure, but Savini and Romero (who scripted this one) could've gone farther.
With that said, Night of the Living Dead (1990) was an enjoyable horror flick experience, one where it's a good time with color and gore and all (plus more full frontal zombie nudity) and as long as you don't think too deeply about what you are watching (and certainly don't try to compare the 1968 and 1990 versions together), you'll have fun."
