I love sci fi space movies so this movie feels like it was made for me. If you can get over some of the issues of actually being as close to the sun as the chacters are, then you will really enjoy this film. the films does sort of go left field near the end but i didn't mind.
A very intense sci-fi tale about our sun dying and we need to jump start it with a nuke. Very tense and dreary atmosphere through out the whole movie. Overall really good. Towards the end it gets really intense and kinda turns into a horror movie.
This is one of the best films I've ever seen! the plot was awesome...not so much original as to the sun dying, but still how everything played out was awesome. the characters themselves you actually start to care for and i gotta give props to pinback for the creepiest scarred villain since Sam Neill in event horizon! this is a must see for someone who loves a good story without all the non-stop action that comes with most sci-fi films!
The movie was stunning in terms of filming but I was less than enthralled with the story. Parts of the story didn't really make sense and I thought the scenes with Pinback were really annoying the way they were filmed. I would have liked to have gotten a really good look at him. I really didn't think it had a scare factor to it, especially when compared to Event Horizon. It was a terrible movie but it wasn't great.
I must be one of the few people who liked this better than event horizon. and it's visually stunning. I think event horizon is scarier than sunshine, but I like sunshine a little bit more (still love both though!)
This film was painful for me to watch. I had high expectations going in and it started out fine but quickly went downhill the closer they got to the sun. Granted there were some good scenes in it and parts were creepy but overall I didn't think it flowed too well and it just kept getting more and more absurd to the point of being unintentionally funny towards the end. Speaking of which, the ending was just laughably terrible. This one let me down big time.
I often think that people just jump on the bandwagon with certain characters or directors. I try to keep an open mind and will like or hate a movie/director/actor because I choose to. On the flip side, I have not seen a movie done by Danny Boyle that I have disliked. I can honestly say that (for now) I will give anything he does a chance. This movie was phenomenal. Even the part that people are considering 'slasher' is brilliant and well thought out. I will have to buy this when I get the chance. Great job!
Loved it Danny Boyle does it again he takes this incredible visual sci-fi and gives us this sense of hopelessness. The science in it is quite good unlike much of the movies of this genera and the last 20 minutes of the movie are such a pleasant surprise.
As a personal fan of Danny Boyle, I could not help but check this movie out once it made it's way to the U.S. And I must say, I was not dissapointed at all. This movie really grabbed me right from the beginning. Seeing the situation they are in, how their characters react to one another really got me going. When they come upon the Icarus I, the movie really shifts into high gear. In fact, I loved the story all the way up to the last quarter. I think that if the slasher ending had just been left out, this film really could have been something amazing, one of the best SciFi films I had seen. But, with slasher an all, it will have to settle for better SciFi film in a while.

Mr. Boyle And Mr.Garland are making history in my opinion with movies like this and 28 days later where it starts off as a very good genre smashing films but then they choose to shift focus for many this will be instantly looked over as "They ran out of ideas so they throw in some insane psycho plot" but I see it as Mr. Garland and Boyle saying "Hey guess why it came down to this why we needed to do all this.....because man was responsible for it". In 28 days later it was because the military security was so lax on dangerous bio-weapon experiments that the rage virus got out. In sunshine it was the fact that we hadn't chosen to separate ourselves from the sun yet we could build Spaceships to house giant nuclear bombs the size of Manhattan Island, why couldn't we build space colonies and leave the the Solar system? Instead, we choose to forcefully restart the sun and on the way the people sent to do it find our first failed attempt and choose to drag it along so just incase they can have a second chance
I'll be honest, when I read the synopsis of this movie and it's theme of "re-igniting the sun for survival" I was pretty skeptical thinking a great it's another Armageddon or something similar. So I watched the trailer, and it made me remember that Armageddon was a decent movie! so it's not such a bad thing after all that the plot has more or less been done before but since it has, at least they brought in the director of Trainspotting & 28 Days Later to do it right. So do me a favor and watch the trailer - then go see the movie! It starts off great and about midway turns from thriller to horror! Great acting all around. Definitely recommended!
"I'm sure many reviews will say something similar: This is two-thirds of a great sci-fi movie. Specifically, the first two thirds. Natural characters, intelligent dialogue, stunning visuals; I was thoroughly immersed in this philosophical disaster movie in space. Heck, even the moody, modern, sentimental score worked.
The central premise concerns humanity's last hope for survival: the Icarus II (EXTREMELY dumb name for a ship travelling to the sun, if you remember the Greek legend), whose crew must re-ignite said star with a nuclear bomb the size of Manhattan island. It's distant future stuff, but the filmmakers work hard at establishing plausibility. They certainly achieve it. Impressive.
Cast-wise, it's an eclectic group. Cillian Murphy gets the starring role, and he's good. Maybe it's just me, but he always looks slightly psychotic - something to do with the eyes perhaps? Anyway, he's a quirky and soulful leading man.
Nice work by Michelle Yeoh, Rose Byrne and Cliff Curtis. Not one weak link in the multinational cast.
I thought Chris Evans stole the acting honours. Despite his character's hot temper, he gave gravitas to every decision, and they included some pretty big ones. He's the pragmatic member of the group; logic's on his side, and he knows it.
The introduction of Icarus I to the second half of the story (the previous ship that mysteriously failed) is not handled particularly well. The crew's decision to deviate from the mission is a poor one, and has disastrous consequences. Later on, a horror element is introduced which is just laughable. All the filmmakers' hard work peters out in a third act of blurry shots, shaky cams and incomprehensible cuts.
Overall, 'Sunshine' is a real mixed bag. Director Danny Boyle and his cast work hard to create a believable scenario. The special effects really are special. I think the fault here lies with writer Garland, whose third act is derivative, contrived, and not worthy of the rest of this fine film." --Sevenmercury7, imdb.com
Astonishing! Sometimes Science Fiction can lead us into the most horrific side of our conception... the unknown. Brilliant characterization and portrayal, and brilliant acoustical and especially visual production. Much prefered to the overused zombie plots of the "28 ___'s Later" duo.
