one of the biggest piles of crap i have ever seen.. the only part i liked where the parts with the evil monkey.. everything felt so rushed but then again the movie was hilarious
Very sad, I watched this movie last night and it was the first time I've been disappointed by a Dario Argento flick. I guess it was mildly entertaining in a very novel kind of way, and i found myself laughing at a lot of it, not sure whether the hilarious parts were supposed to be funny or not though, but really a very poor effort by a very good filmmaker. The AWFUL acting, incomprehensible story, and undeveloped 1-dimensional characters were sadly not saved by the pretty awesome kills. I'm really hoping Argento blows us all away with Giallo, cause this one is a black mark on his repertoire.
Also, did anyone else think that the parts with the ghost mother were hillarious? Lol the effect for her was terrible and she looked like an old asian man in a wig, then when she was pulled into hell by the flaming guy i just thought "wow, okay so this HAS to be a joke of some kind".
An tasteless horror movie with weak acting and a poor ending. I do think it was fast paced, brutal and gory and it just has that entertaining charm about it that I couldn't hate it because of its flaws, it was different from the norm and sometimes I like movies like that, it makes it refreshing. Dario Argento still hasn't impressed me with his horror movies but this was a slight improvement and hopefully they get better and better. Overall a long delayed horror movie that should of been better but ended up being silly, trashy entertainment but it isn't half bad.
Definately not old school Argento, but a pretty enjoyable film nonetheless. Argento did a good job with the gore, a decent storyline and plot, and a fairly good job at playing the viewers emotions. Not his best work, but worth watching for sure.
Hmm... no way near Suspiria, but still ok.
Mother of Tears seemed a little too fast paced, not leaving room for Argentos trademark suspense parts. Especially the ending suffered from the pacing, and i have to agree a 100% with Guitarded on that point.
Not exactly the ending for the trilogi i was hoping for, but what the hell, vicious killings and nudity Argento style never really gets boring.
Claudio Simonetti still knows how to cook up a great score.
Let's consider a piece of garbage and then the film "Mother of Tears". I would rather spend nearly two hours of my time with the first item.
I waited for this film for a long time. A friend of mine and I actually seriously considered traveling to Rome just to see this on the big screen in its homeland. Honestly we were going to fly there see the movie and fly back. We were that dedicated to what was to be an eventful moment for Argento fans. Dario has lost his touch and he has become cinematically insane. Several people have said over the past six years or so that his eye for cinema was suffering from a severe case of cataract. I disagreed and actually found films like "Do You Like Hitchcock" and "The Card Player" to be refreshing, though admittedly not of his better works. This, the third installment of his "Three Mothers" trilogy was simply awful.
The story was "laugh out loud in a mocking manner" ridiculous. Nothing from what we knew concerning the mother of tears based on the history lesson of previous two films was brought out. Serious plot points which should have been expected were missing. The talisman of the Mother of Tears looked like something created during the arts and crafts days of Vacation Bible School with felt, glitter, and Elmer's glue. The opening death scene which was reported as notoriously brutal, was too over the top by even Argento's standards. Perhaps even the gore-hound Lucio Fucli would not have taken it to this level.
Meanwhile Asia stumbles all over herself as if she's not acting but playing doll house with her mother and father. The displays of emotion are nearly untraceable and the lines are too simple for such a confusing story.
Perhaps the most annoying thing about the whole film is the bad make-up effects which were not expected at all. In one scene the crushing of a head complete with an eye popping out on a train was said to have been a brilliant accident by Argento in interviews. The only thing brilliant about it was that it warns the viewer fairly early "Argento is not on his game." For that reason I thank the scene.
The movie gets even more ridiculous when all hell breaks loose and the city is supposed to be in chaos. Though what we see is the most tamed chaos I have seen outside of a Scientologist giving birth. Udo Kier plays a role that seems to have been written for him. By that I mean a role which was not in the film before hand but after Dario decided to include the actor who appeared in his master work, Suspiria they quickly wrote a pointless role followed by a pointless death. The death of Kier's priest character serves no purpose at all, though it is the most brutal in the film. This also makes little sense. Why would the killing of an insignificant priest enrage such passion. All the priest did was tell Asia's character of her family heritage and witch like powers. These supernatural powers I might add were already being revealed to her, and in the end also proved basically pointless.
Then there is the murder of a lesbian. The killer rams a fire poker through her vagina and out of her mouth. Wow! I mean talk about filthy, revolting, juvenile, and insane! I am beginning to believe the rumors of Dario's hatred for women to be true. There was no reason to take a death scene that far. Leave that to horror porn and Troma Studios film makers. That scene alone was the most amateur decision I have ever seen Dario commit to cinema.
Finally comes the big ending in an abandoned house / castle which leads underground. Here, Asia will use her powers to sneak her way to the witch's ceremony which is intended to bestow ultimate power to the mother of tears. As soon as Asia enters she is recognized. "You daughter of a great visionary gone mad!" Ha ha, just kidding. After she is recognized she has the hell beat out of her. Asia however recognizes the power of the mother of tears (the most powerful of the three mothers, according to the legend created by Suspiria and Inferno) is in the talisman. So Asia gets up and tosses the talisman onto a burning candle. Finally the castle crumbles, and evil is destroyed.
So what did I learn from this film? First, it shouldn't have been made. Secondly, the horror vision of Argento's Masters of Horror segments continued into this debacle. Thirdly, Argento has lost his passion. Fourth, he has lost his mind. Finally, the most powerful of the three mothers (witches) could have been destroyed by anyone who can place a rag on a candle. Thus, making the efforts of Suzy Banyon and Mark Elliot seem weak and pointless.
Not the Argento I'm used to (as far as style), but was still delightfully surprised.
I have to perfectly agree with the BD review. This was a strong finish to the three mothers trilogy and a very entertaining film. The gore was up'd as compared to previous Argento but I have to say that the traditional 'roving eye' of the Maestro was suppressed. Daria Nicolodi's character most definitely overstayed her welcome and the CGI was too obvious and fake looking.
There were plenty of pretty women and unique, dramatic kills, which are classic Argento.
He's still got it. Can't wait for his next project.

Its ok.
The gore was really good, minus the little tiny bit of CG.
Fast paced and entertaining.
The ending was a real let down though. It was definitely no Suspiria or Inferno, but was anyone expecting it to be?
I'm not familiar with Argento, and haven't seen the previous two films. I thought the movie was okay, but don't have any desire to run out and see the rest of the trilogy.
Fans of breasts and girl-on-girl will probably enjoy it though. Witches will want a grain of salt and a sense of humour.
like all you others i waited forever for this ...just to be realy pissed off. what a lack of directing talent, i loved suspiria, liked inferno(through all of its faults),but i couldnt stand this tired third instalment.
Don't listen to the haters, this movie is GREAT. Yes, there's a doll and cheesy whitches, and NOT the greatest ending- but this is still a lush, bloody, and well-paced film. It's also a great change-up to the "kids on vacation and spooky stuff happens" poop that's crammed into theaters. If you have a problem with the whole Argento-Bava-Fulci thing then this won't sway you, but for those in the know this is a masterpiece.

When i first heard about it I thought it was boring. But when i heard about that it was Dario Argento's three mothers trilogy. When i was done watching the movie I thought it was a good movie. It had alot of gore. It went great with his trilogy. The best out of his Three Mothers Trilogy.
garbage. argento is the most overrated director of all time. this guy puts out cheesy crap after cheesy crap and people act like his movies are the most ground breaking films of all time. people get a grip, stop letting this hack near a camera.
I thought this was a real cool movie. When I first watched this I never saw Inferno or Susperia and now after watching this I really want to see the other two now. Great movie.
I loved it until the end... WTF!!!! did they realize that they were at 1 hr 35 minutes and think "shit, we were only allowed 1 hr 40 minutes! WRAP IT UP PEOPLE!" This has got to be one of the most anticlimactic movies in recent history. and it was going so well!!! I'm pissed! the only reason i dont give it a 4 or 5 is that what WAS good was REALLLLLLY good.
I really enjoyed this movie, but was a little stunned at a major mistake that I would not have thought Argento would have missed. The baby scene was truly a shocking scene, but something caught my eye and for that to happen generally makes it glaring. As the baby fell, it's arm falls off before it hits the water. Yes, we know it's a doll falling, but that just made it too obvious. As for the acting and what not, I felt it was normal Argento. I just love the atmosphere that he captures with his pictures. I just discovered one of his older movies, that I'm watching tonight... The Hatchet Murders.

Argento is probably the greatest horror director, along with Romero, of all time. Yes, the acting in his films is always a bit cheesy, but then again remember the genre that we love so much. Horror has never been known for outstanding acting, aside from The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, and handful of others. But to me, Suspiria is still on of the best, original and creative films ever made. A true masterpiece of 20th century art. That's right, ART. Inferno has it's flaws, but its still far more original then most films, not just horror. So when i heard that Dario was finally finishing the trilogy that i have grown to love so much, i was excited and a bit nervous. He has been slipping lately in his career, a far stretch from the days of Opera, Suspiria, etc.... But i must say, i thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Not a complete return to form but still a huge improvement. The movie was very entertaining and in my opinion easily the most brutal of the trilogy. Asia was great, and beautiful, as always. When i initially heard that there was a lot of nudity i was skeptical. Argento has always left that stereotype of the genre out of his films. But i thought the nudity was fitting, considering the type of character the Mother was. The first scene with the baby? Wow, was that shocking. And it wasn't just for shock sake, like say the awfulness that was Feast 2. Anyway, if you like Argento, then you will see this so i don't need to convince you, but if you are a Dario "virgin" start with Suspiria or Opera or even Deep Red and then eventually see this. Overall a lot of fun.
Mother of Tears has to be in my top 10 most unintentionally funny movies of all time. There is not a single moment of this movie that isn’t injected with cheese, and then when you’re not laughing at how cheesy it is, the movie is typical and boring. The directing could have been done by any intern film student, and your average high school creative writing class student could have written the unimaginative story in a coma. The majority of the movie plays out a lot like a boring thriller that can’t thrill, with lots of phone calls and lots of shots of Asia running down the street. If I had to guess, I’d say probably twenty full minutes of the runtime is nothing but the camera watching Asia’s back as she runs from something. Though Asia herself did okay in the lead role—and me saying that is VERY generous—every single other actor seemed just to want us to laugh at them. The witches reminded me more of horny, brain-dead teenage girls who just want to get home and get high. That’s supposed to be scary? Ha! Sorry, I call that cheese.
I was never a fan of Suspiria. It was boring, uncreative, the kills were downright stupid, and it still had those unintentionally laughable scenes that I assume Argento seems to think his audience can take seriously. With that said, Argento at least understood how to direct with Suspiria. Mother of Tears, as I said, is even less imaginative and even more boring. It’s essentially Harry Potter, minus the entertainment value and the creativity. I’d even go as far as to say Harry Potter can even carry a more mature/serious tone than Mother of Tears, which is just pathetic.
If Argento took the gore out of this movie, it would essentially be a children’s movie. With that said, the gore isn’t even anything special. Sure, it’s a tad over-the-top, but it’s nothing that going to shock you because it’s just generic. Limbs cut off, guts torn out, throats slit—eh. Seen it all a hundred times. If that’s Argento at his most shocking, once again, Argento is pathetic. The gore really isn’t that extreme in the first place, and the gore scenes are few and far between. At least Argento isn’t a pansy and cuts the camera away during gore scenes like so many other directors—though the gore isn’t anything special or disturbing, I give him that much. He has enough balls not to cut the camera away, unlike pansy Eli Roth.
In the end, if you’re into cheese-horror that isn’t scary, you’ve come to the right place. However, if you’re like me and actually wish more of the horror genre was intelligent and actually had true gore/scares, I don’t know how you can sit through this.
How anybody can compare this to Argento's earlier works is ridiculous. I believe there's a quote on the sleeve of the DVD where BD says "Totally Insane", which leaves me to believe they can't spell as it should be Totally Inane. Bad acting. Bad script. So so special effects. What's missing is a truly gripping sense of atmosphere, not to mention a memorable soundtrack. While Argento's earlier works were riddled with bad scripts and acting as well, at least there was a sense of dread that permeated the film and the music fit the mood (ie, Suspiria, Phenomena, Deep Red, etc.) This movie looks like it's a step above direct to video, and about as good as a continuation to a series as the latest Indiana Jones movie. Sorry, but I expect better than this.

For the wait and the expectation this movie makes the best of them. No, it's not as good as Suspiria. Yes, it is better then Inferno and Argento's more recent. Mother of Tears is still very brutal with some worth while gore and shocks. The movie keeps you captivated as you wonder what is going to be the next gruesome event to transpire. The ending is a little dissappointing, but overall it is an excellent movie and although I don't think Argento fans will be completely satisfied, I doubt they will be dissapointed this enjoyable completion to a great horror trilogy.

Great movie -- still a disappointment compared to Suspiria, but better than Inferno. It carries more of a cheesy feel and you can watch it more than once.
