While I was driving back onto the set for The Devil's Rejects, I was thought I was in the twilight zone- everything was different. The landscaping had been totally redone and everything looked ass-backwards. This time, the rejects house was gone- but there was an entire village constructed along with a train on train tracks! The village looked like it was straight out of Tombstone, only there were old worn out neon signs added to the fronts. The train looked really rundown and beat up, and there was horse crap EVERYWHERE- I'm surprised I didn't step in any of it.

Once we parked we were stuck over by the lunch area in the beating sun waiting for the crew to arrive for interviews. Note to self: don't ever forget suntan lotion again, I'm so burnt! Eventually they finished their shoot and everyone headed back for lunch, which is when we got the change to interview Sid Haig.

Sid Haig (Captain Spaulding):

Sid Haig is an amazing person, with many years of acting experience. He came to the table- without make-up on unfortunately- and was excited to be interviewed. Of course the first question asked was whether he thought there would be a third House of 1000 Corpses, in which he replied "I don't know- it could be!" He explained it all depended on everyone else. It is kind of early to be thinking about a third film. But before you get your hopes up, make sure to read Rob Zombie's interview, he explains why you won't see a third.

Sid then talked about how just like Bill Moseley, he hadn't seen House of 1000 Corpses until three weeks before its release. But he loves Rob, and that's why he will only work with him and two other directors in the future. Can you guess the other two- it should be obvious! He says Quentin Tarantino, Rob Zombie and Jack Hill are the only three directors he'll ever work for, because they know what they want.

When asked about his ability to kill in Reject's, he replied with, "I'm abusive." He elaborated, "I got to scare the crap out of a little kid." He continued, "I actually made him cry." He felt bad though, and made sure to give him a big hug afterwards.

But it's not all bad, he said there's some humor and some horror- "Devil's Rejects is House of 1000 Corpses meets the Wild Bunch at Jeffery Dahmer's house." That's a pretty bold statement, the rest of the interviews would go on to say the same, the movie looks to be quite violent and brutal. But the trick is to make the audience laugh, then rip some guys out! "It's important to shock them."

His character is different from the first film though, besides being more brutal, Sid Had more of a change to let the character grow. The first time it was broad he explained, it was an "established feel" for the character. Now the character is "more gritty, there's a harsh realism." He continues, ""It's no slap ass good time"- so don't get in his way!

Speaking of characters, he was asked about how the actors chemistry had been, where he exclaimed that it has been like a family situation- with no egos. Everyone wants to work together to make the best film possible. Everyone loves sharing screen time together. His only fear is that the first time us horror fans watch Devil's Rejects, we will focus on the actors way more than the story. It's a two time see!

Then Sid finally got to sit down for lunch next to Mr. Ken Foree, who was quite a nice individual. Sid talked a little about how Captain Spaulding is running for president (more on that soon) and Ken was showing off his sweet new hat from the set and joking about being Spaulding's brother. They were all a bunch of great fellows. Then I looked over my shoulder and Rob had sat down for an interview, I can't believe I almost missed the main attraction!

Rob Zombie:

I walked over to the table and caught the middle of a conversation where Rob was saying that he never felt screwed over by Universal- without them; the film wouldn't have been made! Then he went into detail about how Reject's went a lot smoother than House of 1000 Corpses. This time he had an approach, with his killer team. He had a better understanding on how it works. He knew which shots would look better than others and could avoid having to settle in the end. He also had more pre-production time and had Lions Gate Film's full support. They gave him 100% control, no meetings, no having a million people throwing in suggestions- this time he could enjoy it more.

He feels because of this, and the new additions to the cast, "Devil's Rejects is an infinitely better film, it's a far superior movie." He talked about how the cast members came to the set happy and ready to work and they all had loads of fun. He mentioned how his Yoga buddy Diamond Dallas Page and Danny Trejo worked great together, and P/J Soles is a extremely funny girl to work with. He mentioned that they planned on releasing the film in either January or February of 2005.

But the differences are what everyone really wants to know about. I said the first film was inspired by Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Spider Baby and more, what was Rejects inspired by? He said the film is "a violent western in the flavor of Bonnie and Clyde.." This time it's not just humor and it's not just horror- it's going to be a blast.

He then went into more detail, "The first film is goofy, this is brutal!" One example is when Otis and Baby take a western group hostage in a hotel and torture them. A lot of the scenes were extremely hard to film for the actors, it was "brutal". Bill elaborates on this scene soon...

When asked about how long he had thought about directing he exclaimed that, "music was just for fun, this was the career I wanted." He's a busy guy and always likes to be working, which is why he started the company Creep International with Steve Niles. One disappointing piece of news is that he will not be writing the score for this film, he said it was too much work and he needs a "more compelling score."

But let the man find some time, because I want him to get to his other script, which was described as Ed Wood. He said hopefully he'd get around to reassessing it next week- after shooting is wrapped.

But another House of 1000 Corpses? Odds are no. He talked about how the first films are always good and establishing, and then the second film can explore more and can be better- but a third- no way. I'd say it sounds like 99% this is it.

One of the last questions is pretty much what he said before. He really doesn't want to do a directors cut of House of 1000 Corpses. He feels that re-editing the film is like "going back and re-shooting your high school photo." But he did say "maybe" for all of you dying to see one. Then he whisked away back to the set to shoot more for the day. Then what seemed like hours later, Bill Moseley returned for his chance to tell the story of the Devil's Rejects.

Bill Moseley (Otis):

Bill, who was covered in blood from his head down and covered in dirt, sat down with a huge smile. I asked him how everything was going and he said the shoot was going really well that day. Then someone asked him about his mindset going into the movie. He said that he had not really discovered Otis until 2002 after the film was finished. He said he really understand the character now, and thats why this will be a better movie. Besides having a fresh new story, everyone had a chance to "
Flesh out the characters". This time "Otis is a lot more sexual" One of his first scenes has him laying in his tighty whities in bed with a dead girl. Sheri Moon (Baby Firefly) walks in and gets all pissed at him. Bill continues, "otis is either fighting or getting his ass kicked... or being sexual- it's like Mr. Sex!"

Then someone asked about his new scraggly beard and he explained that Rob and him where watching the Superbowl when Rob suggested the beard and sketeched it out for him. I said, "why didn't Rob just point at his beard?"

Then he got back into his character. There's a new tone, Reject's is "grittier, darker and edgy"- there's more "humanity". He said he had cried a couple of times in character. House of 1000 Corpses was more like a cartoon than this. He said the scene in the hotel with the ladies wife frightened him. He said to Rob, "it was really bumming me out." Rob replied, "arts not safe Bill". It's like going to a dark and real place. In his "meet Otis" scene he talked a little about how he was laying in bed with the naked corpse.

He finished by saying that he didn't feel like the filming was rushed, and that he's all ready to go again! Maybe good ol' Bill be in Rob next movie? I hope so...

Unfortunately, rush hour traffic was about to hit and we had someplace to be, so we didn't get the chance to talk to Sheri Moon or William Forsythe, but there was a nice surprise on the set. Eli Roth! Everyone ran up to him like he was the star of the movie- I over heard a little about how his buddy is writing and directing Cabin Fever 2 because he had a really great idea that Lions Gate loved. The Box is still being worked on as the script keeps going back and forth between him and Richard Kelly, who has been really busy lately. Personally I can't wait for that flick. All in all it was a good day, I got sun burnt, ate only a cookie and met a bunch of really cool and motivated individuals. Check out all of our Devil's Rejects images here.
