For more high-res images from the set check out our gallery at Freeze Dried Movies Back when Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses was fighting its way into theaters, who knew that Bloody-Disgusting would be the ones bringing you all the big news and sweet images? Now over a year later, here we are reporting to you from the set of Devil's Rejects, the sequel to Lions Gate Film's release of Ho1000c, which is anticipated to be one of Lions Gate Film's biggest box office hits. The three of us (our reporter Heidi, my girlfriend Andrea and I) had no idea what we were heading into as we drove down the 405 in California towards the set. We slowly watched the city and traffic disintegrate behind us as we exited into a ranch like area topped off with tons of hills. Slowly the scene turned desert-like as we saw a sign on the left of the road, which looked like something out of a Rob Zombie movie. It was a painted sign that was extremely faded and said something about ice cream with a clown on it- we knew we were on the right track. Then we came upon the entrance for the 'rejects'. There was a sign above, which was falling apart, so I don't know what it originally said, and below was a sign labeled 'rejects' pointing the way into the filming area, where it seemed as if the informed parties were the only ones who would know what was awaiting ahead.
As we pulled in and drove towards the parking area, to our left was an old dirty house, which looked like the one or something similar from the first film. The front yard was filled with all sorts of junk and there was sticks and garbage everywhere. The house looked abandoned- you know what it looks like if you've seen the first film. After we parked, and made our introductions (and caught a glimpse of Sheri Moon by her trailer), we hopped on a little four wheeler thingy of some sort and was whisked down a bungling and bumpy trail that led to the shooting ground at the moment. The first thing that caught my eye (besides loads of dust) was Matthew McGrory, who plays Tiny Firefly. The reason should be quite apparent; Matthew is HUGE- even in his chair. The make-up job was astounding, even up close it looked realistic. We jumped off the back of the mini-truck and headed our way closer to the shooting ground, where we saw a Mathew's character dragging a girl in a green torn up dress across the dusty and leaf drenched forest ground. She was actually just covered in a green robe til they shot the scene, she'll be 100% nudey in the film!
We watched in awe, since this was the first time we've ever been on the set of a movie. Our hearts already pounding in excitement turned to instant nervousness when we saw the great Rob Zombie approaching us from the set. We didn't know what to expect, since rock stars are usually asses- but Rob was so incredibly down to Earth and gracious. He spent a little time with us joking around and filling us in, so we didn't feel left out. Then he headed back to his shoot, where this time 'Tiny' dragged the same girl this time butt-naked and seemingly dead through the brush and dirt. Andrea was joking about how uncomfortable it must have been to be naked and dragged through all that crap- is all that dirt going you know where? Ouch! Then after about the 300th warning about poison oak, Rob came over again and pointed out this giant cow chilling in the shade. He told us about how that cow walked across while they were filming and then about how during an earlier shoot, two cows were "fu@*ing" right in the background- so you might actually see that on film!
Then we jumped in the back of a van and were taken to the next shooting ground, where they were prepping for an after lunch shoot. Now things were starting to get interesting! This was a really cool area; there were tons of creepy dead trees and a dirty green swamp. Rob explained to us that Disney built this swamp for the film Haunted Mansion, only the Mansion was nowhere to be seen. We sat back and watched them set up and then ran into Mr. Voorhees himself, Kane Hodder, as he was helping prep for a shot. I yelled over, "watch out for that Voorhees character!" He came over and shot the shit for a few minutes with us, he seemed like a really nice guy. He told us how much fun he was having and how well thing were going. After he headed back to work, another van pulled up and out came Bill Moseley in his Otis Driftwood make-up (now bearing a badass beard) and Sheri Moon in her Baby Firefly make-up. Rob talked to them a little bit, probably preparing them for their upcoming scene. Then he caught eye of Heidi and he came over and talked with us for a little bit- let me tell you, Bill is one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet. We played a little 'catch-up' and then we got pulled back out of the way so they could finish.
After a few minutes of watching them set up, Sheri Moon came on up to have some battle wound on her leg covered; we overheard something about glass and a rug burn. She came over and talked with us for a few minutes, and she too was extremely open and cool. We talked a little bit about her upcoming film, Toolbox Murders and how much fun she was having. While we were talking, we noticed a guy to our left who had a pack of fake guns and was dusting it up for the next shot- but I guess they decided to do it after lunch, so we all piled in a van and took off for the buffet. In the van, Bill and I joked about his Otis hairstyle. He told me he had to shave his head and the special effects guy put on his fake stringy blonde hair. I seriously thought it was real it was such a good job. I was telling him how cool it looked, and it turned out the FX guy was sitting right behind me, so now he knows how awesome he is. But as fake as his hair was, that beard is real, and creepy if you ask me. Bill went from looking like a total gentleman to looking like a downright dirty bastard! He said his character is very mean and evil and now he has the look to match. After joking a little bit about his 'craziest' line, which Sheri Moon dubbed as "Oogie Boogey", we got to the main camp, ate a little bit and bid our farewells. Unfortunately, we missed Sid Haig (Captain Spaulding) by about 30 minutes, but we'll have some word from him within the next few weeks.
We took our final pictures and headed out back to society- and a nice traffic jam. Overall, I can't really comment on how the film will look, since we didn't see too much shot. What I can tell you is that Sheri Moon looks great, Bill Moseley was crazy looking and plays a very cynical character, there was a major shootout filmed the day before and there were tons of cop cars on the set. It does look like it might be very nitty-gritty and Rob did say that this is a very different and darker picture. I think that with this star filled cast, Rob's dedication, and Lions Gate's constant verbal support, Devil's Rejects will easily be a better picture than the first. Shooting wraps on July 2nd, with a early 2005 release planned.
