Horror In Your House's 'Tormented' Selection
Posted August 30, 2010 @ 12:45

Anchor Bay leads a nice week of releases with The Evil Dead on Blu-ray. Sure, you have a few versions sitting around, but you don’t have it in the crystal clarity that is Blu-ray, yet. Troma makes a welcome appearance as well, releasing Dead Eyes Open and the aptly named heavy metal horror flick, Heavy Mental. Other notables include releases from IFC Films, The Red Riding trilogy on Blu-ray/DVD and the British Horror/Comedy, Tormented. I will be dropping some cash on Tuesday, will you?

Stay up all night with the films that put a new twist on the slasher genre. Along with Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980) and Prom Night (1980), Slumber Party Massacre (1982) helped define the slasher film ethos of the 1980s. Put together by first-time director Amy Holden from a script, titled “Don’t Open the Door," by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle), the film was an immediate hit for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, eventually spawning two sequels. Here, for the first time, all three Slumber Party Massacres are brought together in one DVD set, due to drill its way into your heart on Oct. 5, 2010 from Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation!

Magnolia Home Entertainment released its very first feature commentary earmarked and created exclusively for BD Live today as a part of their latest release Survival of the Dead, now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Longtime friends George A. Romero and Steve 'Uncle Creepy' Barton chat about the film, the horror genre, and life in general. A comfortable and hilarious commentary, the feature plays out like two friends catching up and also represents a side of the George that few fans have ever seen.

While we wait for REC 2 to be released on DVD/Blu-ray here in the States, the UK is already getting a viral campaign rolling for their home video release. Exclusively produced for the UK DVD and Blu-ray release comes an 'In Case of a Zombie Emergency' guide video! The highly anticipated sequel to one of the scariest films of all time, [REC] 2 picks up 15 minutes from where we left off, taking us back into the quarantined apartment building where a terrifying virus has run rampant, turning the occupants into mindlessly violent, raging beasts. A heavily armed SWAT team and a mysterious government official are sent in to assess and attempt to neutralize the situation. What they find inside lies beyond the scope of medical science—a demonic nightmare of biblical proportions more terrifying than they could have possibly imagined. Above all it must be contained, before it escapes to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting world outside.

EXCLUSIVE A Sweaty Situation in Exclusive 'Burning Bright' Clip

One of my favorite direct-to-video releases this year is Carlos Brooks' suspenseful Burning Bright (review), which is now available on DVD here in the States with a UK screening at the London FrightFest this week (Friday, August 27) and a UK home vid release September 6! To get you pumped for the release, inside you'll find an exclusive clip featuring the beautiful Briana Evigan in a sticky (more like sweaty) situation. When 20 year old Kelly wakes late at night during a hurricane, she finds a hungry tiger stalking her through the halls of her home. With every door and window boarded up from the outside and her stepfather nowhere to be found, Kelly fights frantically to stay one step ahead of the killer beast while dragging her autistic brother Tom through the house, but with every turn the situation becomes more complicated and desperate.

Easily one of the most requested titles for Blu-ray from Anchor Bay Entertainment’s unparalleled library of horror films, Sam Raimi's 1981 cult classic The Evil Dead will officially make its high definition debut on August 31st with The Evil Dead Blu-ray. For the release, two all-new 1080p anamorphic transfers in 1.85 and the original director-composed 1.33 aspect ratio, have been prepared and personally supervised by director/writer Raimi, presented in high-resolution Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio, as well as a brand new commentary track with Raimi, producer Robert Tapert and star Bruce "Ash" Campbell! In addition, many of the bonus features, released on previous DVD editions, will once again be available on a special, limited edition DVD included with the Blu-ray. Inside you'll find a "clip from the new transfer, featuring commentary by Raimi and Campbell on how they recruited their high school friends to join in on the horrific fun of no-budget filmmaking. Apparently a group of college kids filming 16mm movies in the woods comes across as "snuff filmmaking" to many," says UGO.

"Nilbog! It's goblin spelled backwards! This is their kingdom!" MGM plans an October 5 Blu-ray release for the best-worst movie ever made, Troll 2, which is widely considering the most entertaining "bad" horror movie ever made. Now you get all of the same enjoyment in HD! "Do you see this writing...? Do you know what it means...? Hospitality. And you can't piss on hospitality! I WON'T ALLOW IT!" No extra features have been revealed, but I don't expect any. The plot concerns an American family, the Waits family, who are taking a trip to the country to visit a small town called "Nilbog" (goblin spelled backwards), but are plunged into a nightmare as they are relentlessly pursued by vegetarian goblins, who turn people into plants before they eat them.
