Burial Shrouds, new limited edition horror shirts 11:33am, January 12, 2009
You can never have enough t-shirts with rotting corpses on them, right? Nev, a good friend of the BD staff, has started up his own limited line of horror shirts with a new design released each month. He does great work and has also designed flyers for BD, the Dead Pixels Podcast logo, and has done tons of artwork for metal bands in the past. Shirts are only $11 bucks plus shipping, so head over and support part of the BD family!
After burnthebluesky played through it 3 times and it was passed on to reset so he could beat it, Dead Space finally made it's way into my 360. At first I wasn't all that into it and was bored by level 3, but soon I was obsessed and couldn't stop. The story had a few decent twists and the "puzzles" and bosses were enough to break the monotony of severing limb after limb after limb...
I was cruising through the game looking good in my level 4 suit and dismembering all the bad guys with my maxed out plasma cutter. Then comes chapter 12, soon I'll finally be able to step away from the xbox, spend time with my fiance, and actually do some work on BD. At this point I'm about 11 hours into the game, standing outside with the marker and fighting off some tentacles. All of the sudden a little blue window pops up and says it can't read the disc. WTF. I'm thrown back into the xbox guide and try to start up Dead Space again, it boots up fine and I choose my game save ready to get back in it. The screen goes black and I get the same message again... it can't read the disc. I checked it out and it was perfectly clean except a short scratch that follows the curve of the disc in the middle. It looks like it was scratched while it was spinning instead of it happening outside the xbox somehow.
First I tried copying it to the hard drive but I got the same error. So, I did what any normal person would do and got out the toothpaste and an old t-shirt and started polishing. The scratch was pretty deep though and in the process of trying to get it out I made about a billion smaller ones all around it and now the disc won't even load in my xbox.
Oh well, now I'm (guessing) about a half hour from beating the game and have to buy another copy to play those last few minutes. I'm just glad I didn't get pissed and throw my controller through the tv or something.
Also now that my life is Dead Space free, I can get back to work on the "new" BD that should be ready by the end of the month. We're reorganizing, adding some new cool features, and improving on old ones. It's not a huge change but is a step towards making the massive amounts of content on BD available and easily accessible. I'll detail everything soon and in the next week or two we'll be inviting some users to test drive the beta while we work out some kinks.
Large Hadron Collider switches on and nebulas form on my arm. 11:22am, September 10, 2008
I'm sure you've seen something about the LHC by now, but if you haven't it's basically the most expensive science experiment ever where scientists will try to recreate a miniature version of the Big Bang. I've been reading about it for a while, so today was actually pretty exciting when they successfully switched it on and fired two protons around the tunnel that houses the experiment.
It was perfect timing, because yesterday I stepped out of the tattoo shop one step away from finishing my uber geek outer space sleeve with some fresh nebula like clouds on my arm. I've got a decent collection of larger tattoos on the right arm that are now being filled in and worked together with swirls and clouds from different pictures I've collected.
Here's a crappy cell phone picture of the recent work, next sitting will add a little bit of color and extend them up the arm to finish it off.
and yes that's Robby the Robot's head hiding up there, he fills the inside of my forearm doing his classic pose from the Invisible Boy movie poster.
It's pretty much done, and comes complete with a super retro astronaut, a few space ships, planets, and explosions. I'm not all science nerd though and have my share of horror in me. On the other arm I have the tree/coffin/mummy from The Oblong Box movie poster and plan on continuing with that after my right arm's done.
If you have tattoos to share post them up in the Tattoos!!! thread on our message board. It's got over 1000 posts of users sharing and discussing tattoos.
"But his wandering eye has spread beyond cars to other vehicles. He says that his most intense sexual experience was "making love" to the helicopter from 1980s TV hit Airwolf."
Then a few last side notes since I almost never update blogs:
- Canada Dry Sparking Green Tea Ginger Ale has taken over my life
- The podcasts all have thousands of downloads so thanks for listening!
- New BD shirts and stickers are in, look incredible, and will be available soon
The BD Forums, 1 million threads and growing 7:54pm, August 20, 2008
I'm sure there are a lot of you who just hang around the main page reading news and reviews, but there's a ton going on in the forums that you should check out.
Want to chat about a movie? Doesn't matter if it's new, old, obscure, whatever... there's a place for it on the message board.
Check out the Horror Movie Reference List created by BD member mR_BuNgLe to find existing threads, or if you want to start a thread about a film that doesn't have one already go ahead and start it.
There's also a Forum Games section that features the huge BD Drafts as well as other games like The A-Z Horror Movie Game, Movie Poster Tag, The Name Game, and tons more.
It's not just horror on the message boards either. We've got forums for music discussion, sports, video games, literature, and even stuff that doesn't fit into any category. For the latter, welcome to Whateverland which is our forum for you guessed it, whatever. Here you'll find the most popular and replied to thread on the whole message board, The Off-Topic Thread. There's also a flash Arcade with a few hundred games and tournaments where you can battle other members for top scores and trophies.
With hundreds of active users at all times of the day and over a million posts it can be intimidating to try to find your place among the regulars, but we've got a few threads of note to help you out.
BD member SkInWaLkEr has created the thread Forum Tips for the Noobs! to help new members familiarize themselves with the way things work and the forum rules.
BD member Dobe Dobe created Posting Made Easy to show you how to do everything from posting a new thread, to creating a poll, to finding out if your topic already exists.
The forums can be a great place to meet other horror fans and learn a lot about the genre... I feel like people jump in too often without trying to get a sense of their surroundings and are scared off, but really there are thousands of horror fans who visit the forums every day and overall have a great experience with it.
BD Wants You! College Internships Available 12:56pm, August 12, 2008
Hey guys, we have a couple of internships available BD, and before going on job sites or craigslist I figured there's no better place to post this than here.
We thrive on being the best horror community around, and to have you guys get involved makes more sense than giving an internship to some random who doesn't give a crap about horror.
If you're looking for an internship in either of these two areas send me a PM to apply and I can answer any questions you might have.
GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERNSHIP - You'll help create graphics for future projects and update sections of the site, work on promotional materials, and help on advertising campaigns. You should be proficient in Photoshop and have basic experience in designing for the web.
WEB DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRAMMING INTERNSHIP - Here you'll assist in creating new projects and expand on already existing sections on BD. Skills in PHP, mySQL, and javascript are desired.
Please note we DON'T have an office location for you to work out of so if that's a requirement from your school or institute we might not able to help out. If you live in the Chicagoland or LA areas we can setup face to face meetings though. Otherwise you'll work on your own time and be in contact with us via IM, email, or phone. We are flexible and can help to maximize college credit depending on hours needed or any other special requirements.
So, let me know if you have questions or want to apply.. it's a great opportunity to see you work on the site and build up your resume.
