Quick Batman: The Animated series fact 8:55pm, October 29, 2009
Batman: The Animated Series was the first animated series to have there backgrounds painted on black paper. The distinctive visual combination of film noir imagery and Art Deco designs with a very dark color scheme was called "Dark Deco" by the producers. Once the series was almost finished, the creators were told there animated series was legally to dark for television to air.
Legally to dark my ass!!! Who ever told them that or made that law is an idioit! That cartoon/show would not have been nearly as effective if it didn't have the visual Deco that it had!
Not only one of the best animated shows ever made, but one of the best shows ever made period. This show does not rely on my nostalgia to still be an effective watch. The visual style (which HG touched on), Paul Dini's superb writing style, and the mature subject matter all woven together make this show have lasting power.
As a side note: Joker was my fav villian, but I don't know how many other people enjoyed/appreciated the Rupert Thorn mob boss episodes more often than the "super" villian ones. To be able to take a character and have him fighting wildly fantastic foes one week and then drop him back into the cold reality of organized crime merits applause.
Agree with you 100% CrystalLakeCounselor. What I loved about Batman TAS was it's subtleness. It didn't need loud noises and crazy animation going off every three seconds like most super hero cartoons. If you can remember Batman was very quiet at times. No audio fx, no soundtrack at times. Just Batman figuring something out in his batcave as the bat's fly by. That series to me felt almost TO good. That is why I bought all 4 seasons on DVD.
AGREED. AGREED. AGREED. I recently got them all and have been watching it again. Best animated series ever for sure. Certainly one of the best shows ever. I knew adults that watched the show.
I borrowed the Complete Series from my brother and really enjoyed it. I like how it wasn't set in any particular era (computers and black & white screens, tommy guns, cd's, police blimps, jets, etc.) very cool. Can anyone tell me why the art changed slightly in the last season?
