I knew this was probably going to happen in some fashion but not like this at all. My heart goes out to all the staffers that lost there jobs out of the blue today. Over the years I feel like I almost got to know you so it kinda hurts to see all this.
EGM:
Especially in my childhood, I was an avid magazine reader. I had all the big titles for little kids like Highlights, Ranger Rick, Sesame Street...the list goes on. But when i was about five I started reading video game magazines with Nintendo Power issue 2(the one with Castlevania 2 on the cover), after that I was hooked. As time went on I bought and subscribed to most that were out there: Gamepro, Tips and Tricks, Sega Visions, PSM, GameFan, EGM2, Official Dreamcast/Playstation/Xbox Magazines, Play, Edge and probably a bunch more. As the internet became more of a source for video game news, my subscriptions and purchases dwindled. Over the last couple of years I only bought magazines that I enjoyed the layouts, in depth articles, and individual voices that they contained. Besides Edge magazine, EGM was the only other magazine that was worth a damn in video game journalism. I encourage you to get their final issue(January 2009) and see how great that magazine was.
1up:
I am not sure when I started going to 1up since it's been years now. I know I made an account in Jul 2004, but knowing how much I lurk it was probably beginning of 2004. I really connected with their website because it kinda felt like an underdog and it was more user based and inviting than IGN and Gamespot. The thing that really got me to love 1up was their podcasts. If you have never listened to the 1up podcasts, please give them a chance and listen to how good they were. 1up Yours, Retronauts, GFW Radio/Lan Party, 1up FM, and the 1up Show were weekly rituals that I loved to listen to, learn from, and agree and argue with the hosts. The podcasts in my opinion were the pinnacle of video game podcasts and I tried to learn from them when working on the Dead Pixels podcast.
Hopefully all the people that were fired will be starting better websites and podcasts that I can follow again...I really hope so, this has left a huge hole in my week and makes me fucking blind when it comes to video game news. Good luck guys and if you ever want to be on Dead Pixels....we'd love to have you.
Yeah it really sucks. I heard that 1up was sold to another company. I wonder if there keeping the same staff or not? As for EGM, I agree. It was "THE BEST" video game magazine around. They actually had scoops and really told you how the video games were and didn't just give them good reviews because there game is featured at a branch of stores they own. **cough Gameinformer/Gamestop**
RIP
They've already fired 30 people at 1up according to kotaku, including people who were responsible for their podcasts and gametrailers.com :x
I say it's only a matter of days before UGO has a "super hot video game babe of the day" feature on 1up's front page...
yeah UGO has feature like best sex scene in a game ugh......I hope my 3d pictures didn't blow your mind robot
