Top 10 Things to know about Midnight Meat Train
By SpookyDan

With all of the Bullsh!t shenanigans going on over at Lionsgate Marketing department, I thought now was a great time to get right into the guts of Midnight Meat Train here is my spoiler-free “list” review of Clive Barkers Midnight Meat Train witch opens this Fall at theaters everywhere. ***And if you are excited to see the film, read on below for a list of email addresses and phone numbers to call to help get this movie seen!

Based on the short story from Barker’s Books of Blood, and adapted by screenwriter Jeff Buhler, Midnight Meat Train tells the story of photographer Leon Kauffman who has been given an assignment (of sorts) to capture the dark heart of the city through his cameras lens. His search leads him to discover a murder, and to obsessively follow around a mysterious butcher known simply as Mahogany.

Top 10 things to know about Midnight Meat Train:

The Tone
Its HARD. I don’t know a better way to describe the experience, the gritty realism effectively gets under your skin and makes it crawl.

The Guts
The blood, oh yes there is blood, gallons of it. This film earns it R rating and doesn’t skimp on the details. Just imagine the results of mahogany’s sledgehammer…against the side of someone’s head.

The Sex
Leslie Bibb is sexy, in that chick next door kind of way, and she is pretty dirty in this movie, so dirty + sexy = wonderful.

The Violence
The violence is superb. There are moments that are so real that you can feel the pain yourself, as you sit safely in your chair.

The Pace
The film plays out in a somber unfurling of events. This is not teenagers against a slasher, this is a thinking mans film that doesn’t just spoon feed you everything. In a strange way the film is similar to an opera in telling a story through visuals and emotions.

The Visual Style
The look of the film supports the pace as director Ryuhei Kitamura plays with lights with such gracefulness that it rivals early Ridley Scott works. His camera expertise is well known through his past films like Versus and Azumi, but here Kitamura seems matured and elegant, in this beautifully shot movie

The Audience Experience
Part of the fun of watching a horror film is watching the audience in front of you jump and squirm. In one particularly disgusting scene, I was thoroughly enjoying watching the people in front of me hide under their eyes, slouching down and doing everything they could to not watch the nastiness on the screen, but never turning away.

The Scene Stealer
Brook Shields! Ok I know you are thinking, who cares about her. But Shields effortlessly steals every scene she is in. Her command of the character is so astonishing; I have to admit that I was disappointed that she was not in the film more. I don’t think I have liked her this much since she was the ridiculously hot (and naked) underage girl in The Blue Lagoon!

The Meat
Mahogany works as a butcher in a meat packing plant, and the strangest thing happens when you are viewing the rows and rows of dead cow flesh hanging from hooks, sympathy and disgust. Its not all pretty and nice like it was in Rocky, the ribcages and meat are all visible, then when you watch dozens of people working away at the meat, trimming the fat and discarding it, well I am not a wimp but this was gross! Just seeing the mass amount of death that happens daily inside one of these places made me want to go vegetarian. So I had pork (not cow) at the restaurant after the show.

The Story
Yes my friends, this is the Clive Barker film that we have been waiting for since Hellraiser! Barker has a style very few contemporary authors can equal. Midnight Meat Train is Barkers best adaptation yet, and he should be very proud that his team put together a film that will stand the test of time, and entertain us all the way into our collective nightmares.

From Clive Himself:

If you wish to see MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN in all its big screen glory at a THEATER near you, please do the following:

Cut and paste the message at the bottom of this post and e-mail it to:

1) investor relations at Lionsgate: keasterling@lionsgate.com

2) Lionsgate: general-inquiries@lionsgate.com

3) call Lionsgate at (310) 449-9200 and express your desire to see MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN get the release it deserves.

BE POLITE AND PROFESSIONAL! We do not want to piss them off, just want them to know how many fans out there would like to shell out their hard earned cash to see the most groundbreaking horror film of the past ten years in a real movie theater!

HERE'S A SAMPLE MESSAGE FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE (or feel free to compose your own):

Dear Lionsgate,

As a long time Clive Barker fan, I am writing you to express my strong desire to see "The Midnight Meat Train" on the big screen.

Rumors are currently circulating that the film will only be released on a limited basis and I am very concerned that I will miss my opportunity to see the most highly anticipated Clive Barker film in over a decade in all of its big screen glory!

There are millions of horror fans like myself who have been disappointed by the recent trend towards watered down PG-13 horror movies. Clive's work represents a return to serious, thought provoking horror movies and with Ryuhei Kitamura at the helm, I am even more excited to experience this collaboration, as it was intended: in a packed theater with hundreds of other horror fans like myself!

I urge you to please give this film the release it deserves!

Many thanks,
YOUR NAME
